A Betrothal Discussion. (tag: Honey) by Lucian D'Alesandro

After the pool party incident where his sister caused a big scene for no reason, Lucian decided it would be best to calm things down a bit by talking to Honey. Alex did have a point after all, when she reminded him that he never asked the girl he was betrothed to how she felt about the whole situation. He may not want to marry her, but Honey never did anything to him and surely didn’t deserve to be overlooked in his dating decisions.

He let things cool down for a few days, and then sent an owl to Honey with the following note:

Honey,

I was hoping you would meet me in the Gardens tomorrow after lunch to discuss a few things about our betrothal. If I don’t hear back from you I will assume you are going to meet me. I will be waiting by the entrance.

Sincerely,
Lucian

The next day, he nervously picked at his lunch in the Hall. Lucian wasn’t sure why he was nervous. Perhaps he was just afraid of her reaction, though he was pretty sure that she didn’t want anything to do with him. That was probably because of Heaven’s influence. Lucian thought back to Honey’s outburst when her father announced their betrothal, and how quickly she objected. After picking at his lunch a few more moments, he got up from the table and collected his things.

Lucian made his way to the Gardens, and sat on one of the benches towards the entrance. He anxiously tapped his foot on the ground and looked around, hoping Honey would arrive soon.

After what seemed like a lifetime, Lucian heard footsteps approaching him and stood to hopefully greet Honey.

If we must. by Honey Baird

The owl from Lucian had come as a surprise. Honey could have been rude and ignored the request all together, but curiosity had gotten the better of her. Was he going to tell her that he was going to go public with his fling with Clara? If he was, then it wasn’t her that he would need to watch out for. Alex had an undying hatred for the girl. Admittedly, she could understand where Alex was coming from. Clara wasn’t a proper pureblood. Though, one might think that Honey wasn’t either, because of the way she liked to dress. For example, today she was wearing ripped jeans, a black t-shirt with various colored stars all over it, black converses, and lots of bracelets. Her dark hair was pulled into two ponytails. But regardless of what she wore, what made her proper and Clara improper was more in their belief system.

For Lucian to actually be with the girl, he would have to give up the entire belief system of their world. Was he willing to do that? She wasn’t sure and she didn’t want to find out. If it were just she, then it wouldn’t have been an issue. She probably would have encouraged the union, because it would have meant the betrothal would have been done and over with. She would have been free to try and find someone else. But it had to do with Heaven too. She knew her sister was oblivious to the fact of why she hated Lucian so much or that she didn’t even really hate him, but she couldn’t make her accept the truth. She would have to figure that out for herself.

All of these thoughts were rolling through her head as she walked the path that lead to Lucian. She saw him up ahead. “Hello, Lucian,” she said somewhat stiffly and formally. Aside from a brief walk around her family’s grounds, they had never actually spoken with each other. It seemed a bit odd. “I’m sorry if I don’t get into the small talk, but it’s clear why we’re both here – to discuss the betrothal. Are you going public with Clara?” She didn’t see a point to beating around the obvious and so just put it out there. She sat down on the bench with her legs folded and starred at him intently, waiting for him to answer.

Unfortunately, we must. by Lucian

Well, this girl gets right down to business Lucian thought to himself as Honey went right to the topic of their betrothal when she began speaking. He sat back down on the bench beside her and took a deep breath and held it for a moment, before letting it slowly escape through his nose. He nervously kicked a small rock on the ground in front of him. Lucian wasn’t neccisarily afraid of Honey, but he hoped she didn’t harbor as much hate towards him as Alex or Heaven seemed to.

After refocusing his thoughts, he began speaking about why he had asked Honey to meet him in the Gardens. “I am going to assume that you do not want to be betrothed to me. I kind of gathered that from the little outburst you had when you found out I was betrothed to you. I take no offense…I mean I don’t want to be betrothed to you either.” Realizing that may have sounded harsh, though it was truthful, Lucian changed his tone. “I mean, you seem cool and all, but I like Clara. Plus, I just find it strange being betrothed to my little sister’s friend.”

Lucian shifted his posture on the bench and turned a little to face Honey. “So, since it seems neither of us want to be betrothed to one another, then I think we should be free to date whoever we choose to. I won’t do anything too public, because I know how our parents may react to that, and I don’t want anything to reflect badly on you or your family. As far as Clara and I…well, I am not sure what it going on with that situation yet. It is something I have to discuss with her. I wanted to talk to you first before making any decisions, and I didn’t want to seem inconsiderate. Alex made sure to point out my mistake in not talking to you before I spent time with Clara at the pool party.”

Lucian paused for a moment, and thought back to the pool party, where he recalled Heaven walking past them and parading around in a white bikini. It had been quite distracting, and he was a bit surprised she chose to wear it since she always seemed so proper. He opened his mouth to ask Honey whether or not Heaven talked to Henri since their dinner, but decided against it. Why should he care what Heaven did, or if she likes the fact that she is betrothed to Henri? He shouldn’t care at all.

Finally, he stood up, and faced Honey. “That’s really all I had to say about it. I hope that we can at least be friendly towards one another, or maybe even be friends one day. Though, I am not sure my sister would be too happy with that.”

Then, let's proceed. by Honey

Honey listened quietly as Lucian talked. When he finished, she took a moment to collect her thoughts. She didn’t want to say the wrong thing, but she wanted to be clear in what she was saying. “You are correct in saying that I do not wish to be betrothed to you. I have nothing against you; so perhaps, one day we will be friends.” She paused a moment, looking down at her knees before looking back at Lucian. “I do not think your sister will care if we are friends or not. I think she cares more about how you conduct yourself and whom you conduct yourself with. You know that she cares about reputation.”

She shrugged a bit, showing that she didn’t care as much. If she did, she would worry more about the way she dressed. “Besides, she cares about you in her own weird way. She doesn’t want to see you get hurt and she wants you to be happy. She probably doesn’t think that will happen with Clara. She seems like a nice girl and all.” She was stretching the truth a bit at this part considering how she acted towards Alex, but it wasn’t her place to get into all that.

“Honestly, I don’t really see you with Clara,” Honey stated bluntly, looking him straight in the eye. She knew whom he would be perfect with even if he didn’t see it himself. “I think you’re using her to hide what you actually know already, because you’re just being too stupid and stubborn to admit it.” Though, it wasn’t like her sister wasn’t being equally uncooperative. It was obvious from the dinner at their estate what was going on, but she couldn’t make them be together. Or could she? There was some way to make them realize it, wasn’t there? Maybe?

“Anyhow, I appreciate your honesty in the matter. I had always planned on seeing whomever I wished. However, there is no one of interest to me at the moment, but thank you in giving me permission,” she said it jokingly, but there was some truth in it. She had never intended on letting the betrothal get in her way, though, she didn’t want to disappoint her parents. She simply had decided that finding someone more suitable that she actually liked would be the key. It was brilliant, really. Standing up, she offered her hand to Lucian, “So, friends, then?”

I think I would rather cease and desist. by Lucian

Lucian showed the same respect for Honey that she gave him while he talked, and listened quietly as she spoke her thoughts about their betrothal. A few of the things she stated made him want to either laugh or become angry with her. He managed to restrain himself until she finished talking and stood up so that they were face to face again.

“Unfortunately, reputation is all my sister cares about. She does not care if I am happy. Sometimes, I don’t think she even cares if she is happy. How else could she be so content with betrothals?” He realized this may have sounded a bit harsh on his part, but talking about Alex instantly gave him a headache. They had avoided each other since the whole pool incident. “If she cares about me, then it must be in a very peculiar way that I just cannot understand.”

When Honey spoke about Lucian being too stubborn and stupid to admit what he was hiding, he didn’t know whether to simply walk away or yell at her. He settled for some sort of middle ground between both extremes. “As for my being too stupid or stubborn to admit what I am hiding…I really do not know what you are referring to. I am not trying to sound rude, but I wish everyone would stop trying to decide what is best for me.” When he was at home, his mother was always breathing down his neck. At school, his sister was always watching what he was doing and reporting back to their mother. Then, a girl he hardly knew was trying to offer him relationship advice when he wasn’t even in a relationship. At this point, Lucian began laughing as though someone had just told him the best joke he ever heard. It was all quite preposterous.

“I’m sorry,” he said after a moment, “I realize you are probably just sticking up for your friend.” His mind wandered then onto the subject of what she could possibly be talking about. What was she trying to insinuate? There was only one thing he could possibly think of, and that was just ridiculous. Lucian quickly dismissed that thought and reached out to shake Honey’s hand. “Friends,” he said with a smile.
