Sonora in the Winter by Maximilian Joshua McLachlan

It wasn't strange to be at school during the summer holidays. Well, they were considered winter holidays in America. It was empty, as expected, and Josh decided that today he would take a walk in the Labyrinth Gardens. He was used to having heat during December. What would be great would be going back to Sydney in June to snow or at least to the cool weather while every else would be going to summer. He liked this dry heat better than the tropical ones in Australia, though he liked the cold better overall. Living in the southern hemisphere really did turn things on its head. It just added to the fact that Josh didn't really belong or fit in with his classmates here. It wasn't that he was exactly trying though.

A nice stroll in the sun would clear his head. Josh wasn't wearing his school robes, it being break and all, but the cool navy blue robes he owned. He had a lot of thinking to do. His first term here as a fourth-year transfer student and already he'd gathered a reputation. Not a good one either. On other occasions, it wouldn't matter to him, but as he traveled on the outskirts of the maze, he wondered why people were so quick to judge each other. That was a silly question. Josh did the same to everyone else. It was easy to categorize people and to know everyone in order to protect and make allies. He had wanted to stay in the shadows, but that had clearly not happened. He needed a new game plan.

It also wouldn't do having Regina Parker angry at him. She most likely hadn't forgotten the incident, but having already gained an enemy wasn't what Josh was going for. It would wound his pride, but he supposed it would be good to set things right with her. Apologize at the very least. Josh found a patch of desert in the back of the garden, untouched by magic, and he made a beeline for it. It was fitting. Sometimes he felt like he was on the outskirts of life looking in at the abundant growth of other students as he stayed the same. Always the same. He sat down in the hot desert sun in his original form, then lied on his back and closed his eyes. School would start soon and his guard would have to be up constantly.

Sometimes he just wished he could get away from people altogether and have his own tropical island. Have a place like Australia all to himself. But most of the time he just wished that she was here. Maybe if he got heatstroke and died, the afterlife would be easier. It was worth a shot.
