Practicing by Ephanie Lucore

Since a trip to the library at the beginning of the year, Ephanie had been obsessed with The Lion King. She had read the play over and over and was fairly certain that she had the whole thing memorized by now. If any of her roommates had heard her practicing in the dorms, not that she cared if they heard her, but she was sure that she had probably driven them crazy with the repetition.

Today, however, she had decided to move her production outdoors where she had more room to move around. Softly, she started singing, “I’m gonna be a mighty king, so enemies beware!” At this point, she acted like she was stalking before swirling around into a haughty pose. With more of a snobbish singing tone, she continued, “I’ve never seen a king of beasts with quite so little hair.” Then, she went back to prancing about. Ephanie jumped up onto the edge of the fountain and waved her hands. “I’m gonna be the mane event like no king was before. I’m brushing up on looking down. I’m working on my roar.”

Attempting to roar though produced little more than a girlish growl. No, that wasn’t going to work at all. Sitting cross-legged on the edge of the fountain, she attempted a better roar. “Rowrr!” That was a little better, but it was definitely nowhere the roar that she saw in her head when she read the play. Plus, with three parts, it was a challenge going back and forth between them. Oh, well. If she wanted to be an actress, she would just have to learn to adopt different personalities. She considered this to be practiced. It was too bad that she and Elijah hadn’t continued to work on the play after his offer in the library. Then, they would have just needed a third.

Oh, well. When life handed you lemons, you just made lemon meringue pie! Getting up, she started from where she had left off. “Thus far a rather uninspiring thing.” She did a two-step. “Oh, I just can’t wait to be king!” Now was going to be the really tricky part, because all three parts came in. “No one saying do this.” She tilted her head back. A shake of the finger. “Now when I said that—“ Forward. “No one saying be there. No one saying stop…Ugh!” She had skipped a part without thinking about it. Usually, she just practiced the parts individually, but now she was messing them all up! Slumping back down, she ran her fingers through her strawberry blonde hair. What would Kallan Kennedy do? “Probably say I’m being silly and no real actress would sit here moping.”

Watching the practice by Andrina Thornton

Andri loved learning and reading so she’d spent a lot of her time at the Library studying her Sign Language and Braille learning books to try to help teach Audi and Ashling when she returned home for summer. She also knew that her roommates and some of her housemates were in there a lot as well. This was not a bad thing. Aladren’s loved to learn, there would be nothing to deny that fact, she knew, in all her life. She’d taught herself so many words in sign language, but the Braille wasn’t working as well for her. Andri was getting mad at herself for that, so she decided sitting in the library some more that day would be a bad idea. The weather looked nice anyway, so there’s no reason to sit inside, right? she thought as she closed her heavy books and slid them back into her bag.

Andri decided to go out into the Gardens (which she now knew weren’t really full of things that would hurt her as she had thought before coming to Sonora) and pulling her bag behind her running down the paths with excitement and feeling the air brush her cheeks she stopped short hearing music in her ears. She slowed down and walked, peeking through some bushes towards the music. She smiled and giggled when she noticed that it was her roommate, Ephanie, singing from The Lion King. Andri loved hearing her roommate practice in their room but hadn’t seen her sing it anywhere else as of yet. At first, Andri stayed hidden, just watching. What Ephanie was doing out there reminded the first year of her slightly younger sister Aubrielle and Andri couldn’t wait to introduce her sister to Ephanie! She knew they’d get along really well.

Right then, Ephanie was working on one of Brielle’s favorite songs and that didn’t harm the eleven year olds’ thoughts in the least. Andri knew she couldn’t hide behind the bush much longer, but she wanted to see where this performance would go before popping out. Perhaps she’d have her chance to come out as another one of the characters?

Ephanie’s roar hadn’t worked as well as it looked like she’d hoped and she sat down cross-legged on the edge of the fountain and roared again. This time was better than the first, but Andri knew this was the time to pop out of the bush.

But then she started again and Andri decided to wait another minute or so to pop out.

“Thus far a rather uninspiring thing.” Ephanie went on doing her two step as she went on again trying to do all three parts. Ephanie slumped back down and Andri watched as she ran her hands through her hair. “Probably say I’m being silly and no real actress would sit here moping.”

“Anyone would say that.” Andri said as she finally popped out of the bush. “Let me help you. And next year, if my sister gets her letter she’d be glad to help too.”
