Another big step (tag: Briony) by Saul Pierce

Two years ago, Saul Pierce had asked Briony O'Leary to the ball. They'd had a good time and he had flirted shamelessly with her for the most of last year, but somehow, circumstances had never quite worked out that he had the right opening to ask a very specific question.

Not to mention, he had been plagued by last minute doubts about Pepper. Though he'd reduced it, and he flirted with Briony more, he hadn't completely stopped flirting with the other red-headed Teppenpaw he'd crushed on since his second year. But he thought he had put those firmly to rest now. He was sixteen now. It was time to make a definitive decision, and as hard as it was, he thought he'd made the right choice two years ago. Now he just had to make it official.

Over the summer, quite aside from the planning of his campaign for Head Boy, Saul had decided he ought to do one additional bit of planning. He wasn't going to let another year slip by without asking Briony out.

He waited about a week into the school, so that all the initial year craziness could settle down, then he sent her an owl inviting her to meet him down in the Gardens. He arrived prior to the appointed time (on purpose, not because his watch was on the fritz again), dressed almost as well as he had been when polling the voting populace of the school.

His hair was styled closer to his normal look, but on the advice of Echo and Matt, he'd tamed it in a little bit. He wore a dressier shirt than his usual t-shirts, though he'd left the tie in his room today, and he'd picked one of his black pairs of jeans figuring they looked classier than his blue ones. On his feet, were his newest pair of converse rather than the falling apart pair he'd worn earlier in the day, with doodles and reminders drawn all over their canvas.

As he fidgeted in place while waiting for Briony to arrive, he was careful to keep his right hand held behind his back. He was sure Simon would forgive him for picking some of the flowers out of the Gardens. It was for a good cause.

When he spotted her, he perked up and grinned brightly and hurried forward to meet her. "Hey, Briony," he greeted with a wide smile that was only slightly marred by a rare nervousness. Trained to ignore nerves, he took a deep breath and forged on, bringing forward his right hand with its small but colorful homemade bouquet. "Would you like to be my girlfriend?"

Or two by Briony O'Leary

When Briony received an owl from Saul asking her to meet him in the Gardens, she was a bit surprised. While she talked to Saul often in and outside of class, she didn’t normally owl him or vice versa nor set up meeting times. Even so, she didn’t think much about the fact that he wanted to meet her and wore what she normally wore on any given day when she wasn’t wearing the uniform robes. She had on a pair of jeans, a simple tee, and sneakers. Her hair was worn loose and curled over her shoulders.

Seeing Saul, she had to pause for a moment. He was wearing an actual dress shirt and black jeans. She wasn’t used to seeing him like that. Her first thought in regards to this was that she should have put forth more effort into her own clothing, as she suddenly felt understated. Her second thought was questioning why he seemed more dressed up than normal, but there was no denying that he looked awfully cute. Of course, she normally thought he did, but there were times like at the Ball and now when he was just more so.

Before she could get to where he was, Saul met her and without getting out a greeting, he held out a rather lovely bouquet. Half distracted by the appearance of the flowers and half pondering if she even heard him right that when her eyes met his, she stared a moment longer than necessary. Had he actually asked her to be his girlfriend? Once she realized that yes, he indeed had asked her, a yes or no would have been appropriate, but she had to think about it. Was she even allowed to date?

Aside from the dance, Briony had never actually had a date or dated anyone, so it had never really been a topic of discussion between her and her father. Would he approve? Was she supposed to ask for permission? No, that would be silly. She was sixteen years old and would soon be seventeen, an official adult. She felt she was old enough to make the decision, though she did want his approval, but then he had approved well enough for the dance, so she guessed he would approve of Saul being her boyfriend. At least, she hoped so.

She chewed on her lip for a moment more before finally giving her answer, “Yes. Yes, I would like that. Very much.” She giggled a bit nervously at her own ramblings since the first yes would have been obvious enough that she did want to be. Now, that they were presumably a couple, what were they supposed to do? Was there a way of sealing the deal? Glancing down, she noticed the bouquet that she had yet to take and an idea occurred to her enough to give her a fuzzy feeling in her stomach. Grinning, she took the flowers and leaned forward to bestow a kiss on his cheek.

Or . . . wow. by Saul

She wasn't answering. Something that might have been panic fluttered inside Saul chest and stomach. A part of his mind wondered if the feeling was the 'butterflies' some people talked about, but they felt far more unsettling than he thought butterflies had any business being. He shifted his weight to his other foot and then back again. He bit his lower lip so he didn't sabotage any small chance that all this consideration might result in a 'yes' instead of a 'have you lost what little sense you had?' - which admittedly, wasn't something he thought Briony was likely to say, but he'd asked her out and she wasn't answering and he was panicking.

But then she was answering, and despite the heart-stopping hesitation, she was even saying yes! The butterfly impersonators vanished as if they'd never been, and a bright happy grin grew across his face. She'd said yes!

Before he could even begin to comprehend how awesome that was or decide what he should say or otherwise do anything other than grin like an idiot - a very very happy idiot - she was accepting his flowers and her lips were pressing against his cheek. Saul's eyes opened wide in surprise and his brain short circuited.

Briony was kissing him.

Briony had kissed him.

It was impossible to control what happened next, even if he had been inclined to. It would have killed him to try to keep in the whoop of joy he let out. He would have spontaneously launched into orbit (though, in all honesty, he wasn't actually a hundred percent sure he hadn't anyway) if he hadn't spun them both around in an impromptu little dance of unbridled excitement and then hugged her (while generously being mindful of not crushing the flowers).

He pulled back again, grinning in a fashion that might have been scary if he wasn't so obviously and genuinely ecstatic. "Whoo. Wow. You said yes. Awesome. You are awesome. And pretty. Really pretty." The fact that she was dressed in nothing fancier than a t-shirt and jeans and hadn't done anything special with her hair was immaterial. She was Briony. And she was his girlfriend.

Another overwhelming surge of elated glee had him leaning in and returning the favor, as he landed a quick kiss on her own cheek.
