A needed conversation TAG: Josiah by Alexis Ashwood

Alexis had traveled out to the Labyrinth Gardens with a plan. She knew Josiah would be out here. She had explored everywhere but the Teppenpaw commons. She would if she knew where they were and how to get in. Until then, she would try to find him in the last place she hadn’t looked. He had to get bored sooner or later. Her cousin wasn’t a book type. It was a little after breakfast, so she didn’t think he’d be at the Cascade Hall. Unless Josiah had somehow injured himself and landed in the Hospital wing (she smiled at the thought), he would be in the Labyrinth Gardens.

Rumors went around the school and Alexis had quite heard someone talking about the Teppenpaw Quidditch team. Josiah’s name had appeared. Oh, she was excited. Until she realized that he could have just as easily discovered she had signed up for her own team. That wasn’t good at all. She had to do something to keep him silent.

This was why the red head had been looking for him. And as she wandered the paths of the Labyrinth Gardens, she spotted him. No one else could have such awfully messy red hair. She ran up behind him, grabbed his sleeve, other hand poking him with her wand, and dragged him to a somewhat hidden place. She pushed him onto a bench, looking as threatening as she could manage.

“Alright Josiah.” She spat, smiling sweetly at her cousin as she did so. “I have some things to say, and you’re going to listen. If you don’t, I’ll gladly test my antler-growing hex on you that I found in a library book.” She didn’t give him time to respond as she continued on.

“Now you’ve probably heard that I’ve signed up for the Crotalus Quidditch team. Well, I’ve heard that you’ve joined Teppenpaw’s. As the heir to the Ashwood bloodline, I hope you know that this won’t be allowed.” she waved her wand threateningly. “Unless you keep it quiet about me joining the Crotalus team. Understand?”

Oh man, you're such a drama queen! by Josiah

Josiah was minding his own business, taking a leisurely stroll in the Labyrinth gardens. Actually, he was pretty bored, as he has just sent off another letter with Mortimer to a certain girl his parents forbade him to talk to. He had, for once, done all his homework. He had gotten bored with charming a paper airplane to zoom around the common room. He was sure that Kaylie, Lexi or Pepper was planning on making him land his plane anyways. It wasn’t hurting anyone, but people in authority often decided that fun wasn’t allowed.

He had begun to whistle when a rustle of quick footsteps approached him. He didn’t have time to turn around and see who it was before he was being grabbed and drug off at wand point. He struggled to free his sleeve, to surprised to scream. He wheeled around to face his attacker and found himself face-to-face with an Alexis who looked like she was making a great effort to seem scary.

“Alright Josiah. I have some things to say, and you’re going to listen. If you don’t, I’ll gladly test my antler-growing hex on you that I found in a library book.”

Was she really threatening him? He was the heir to their family title! He could report her unlady-like behavior and she’d be in so much trouble. He opened his mouth to give her an angry retort when she continued on.

“Now you’ve probably heard that I’ve signed up for the Crotalus Quidditch team.”

She had? This was total news to him. He frowned at her. Since when did she like any sports? Didn’t she have like a total allergy to anything that got her hands dirty? Well, physically, not metaphorically.

Her next words turned his blood to ice. She knew he was on the team? Oh crap, was she going to squeal? She wouldn’t, he knew it. Still, he decided to keep his trap shut about her in quidditch.

“Hey, so long as WAIL doesn’t hear about your little quidditch fun, I don’t care. To be honest, I didn’t even know you were on the team. Don’t you have like a sports allergy or something? I didn’t even know you could stay on a broom for more than three seconds before falling off and landing on your fat little butt!” He didn’t quite care that ‘fat little butt’ was sort of an oxymoron.

He snorted and turned away from her. “You’ve kept plenty from your dear auntie without any threats. Dunno why you’re going all ‘garrr’ now. I mean, you threatened about Hyana. Then you told Mother and Father about her. By the way, I hate you for that and I’ll probably never forgive you. But you usually are so quiet on your threats. Are you actually scared auntie will find out?” He laughed at her, looking her in the eyes again.

“Oh go ahead and hex me. I know you wanna. Have at it,” He tapped his chest with a grin. “One free shot?” He suggested, enjoying egging dear little Lexi on.

And what does that make you? by Alexis

Alexis had felt pretty confident. He must have been pretty scared. Yes, Alexis Ashwood was positive that she wouldn’t have to worry about her cousin wailing to auntie or mother. That was until he began to speak.

Her heart fell a good foot or so, replaced by anger. Okay, she had just probably done the stupidest thing on earth. How could she have been so dumb? She shouldn’t have mentioned herself being on the Quidditch team. She should’ve waited to see if he’d say anything about it. She couldn’t stop glaring at him, though, when he spoke.

“Hey, so long as WAIL doesn’t hear about your little quidditch fun, I don’t care. To be honest, I didn’t even know you were on the team. Don’t you have like a sports allergy or something? I didn’t even know you could stay on a broom for more than three seconds before falling off and landing on your fat little butt!”

“For your information, I can fly just fine, thank you.” She kept from mentioning that Cecily was already doing WAIL’s job, setting those flyers all over the commons. And Josiah would pay for that fat comment, even if he was a moron who made an oxymoron with that attempted insult. He continued to speak, and behind his back she smiled at the comment about Hyana. Yeah, that was the highlight of her summer. It was probably making Hyana’s life at Rocky Mountain International ten times worse because of Chrysi.

Her smile was wiped off her face when he asked if she was scared. Her eyes bore into his. Alexis? Scared? That was impossible. Alexis never got scared. “I’m not afraid of Auntie finding out.” she replied, trying to keep her anger in check. “Why would I be scared of something so meaningless? It’s not like I’m the heir to the bloodline. If I dishonor the family, I have nothing to worry about. You, on the other hand…” she trailed off, twirling her wand in her fingers once again, which was when Josiah said the most hilarious thing on earth.

“Oh go ahead and hex me. I know you wanna. Have at it. One free shot?”

Alexis laughed. He could not be serious. She didn’t need an invitation to hex him. She could do that whenever she wanted. Normally, she wouldn’t. But, he did offer…

Scourgify.” she said, pointing her wand at his mouth. With a grin, she watched his mouth foam with soap. “That was for the fat comment. Now, I will give you something to worry about. In case you didn’t know, mother and father thought it would be appropriate to sign my family up for PURE. PURE was created for the extermination of mudbloods. If you don’t do as I say, one of the first mudbloods to worry about will be your darling Hyana.” She placed a hand on her hip. He would quit Quidditch, she would make him.

Angry. by Josiah

“Scourgify.”

Josiah’s mouth began to foam up. He was taken by surprise. He was sure that Lexi would use the antler hex on him. He was used to his mouth getting scourgified by his mother. He let the soap gather in his mouth, wincing at the unpleasant taste. Oh she was not going to like his next move.

Then she continued speaking.

“That was for the fat comment. Now, I will give you something to worry about. In case you didn’t know, mother and father thought it would be appropriate to sign my family up for PURE. PURE was created for the extermination of mudbloods. If you don’t do as I say, one of the first mudbloods to worry about will be your darling Hyana.”

His blood boiled. A hand clenched his stomach in an iron fist. He glared at her. How dare she threaten Hyana like that? Besides Hyana, she threatened Joy even! Joy and his auntie and uncle! There was no way she could get away with this. That little brat!

Finally, the bubbles quit multiplying. He sucked in a breath through his nose and spat the mouthful of bubbles in her eyes.

“DON’T YOU DARE!” Josiah screamed, leaping at her, hands in claws.

He pulled her down to the ground by her hair. Josiah pinned her down with one knee on either side of her. “Take it back you little… you…” he couldn’t even begin to think of a word harsh enough. He pointed his wand at her throat. It began to emit several angry yellow sparks. “TAKE IT BACK!” he roared, smashing her head against the ground.

He never remembered being this angry in his life. How could those stupid PURE people and his cousin make him this mad? Even this summer he didn’t get as mad as he was now. It was because she threatened Hyana, he was sure. She called Hyana a mudblood.

And he was afraid. He was afraid for Auntie and Uncle Bill. He was afraid that PURE would kill Joy. His darling little cousin. She was so happy to read a whole book that had no pictures in it. She was so happy that she learned how to times two and two together. He imagined her beaming proud face as she wrote to him in her messy eight-year-old handwriting. He was still a kid; what could he do to protect her?

And here was his darling cousin, threatening her. Did Alexis even know what she was supporting? Did she care that it was murder?

Children should play nicely together by Professor Powell

Sadi was enjoying one of her regular strolls around the gardens. She loved teaching, and enjoyed a quiet spot of reading in her rooms, but often it was pleasant to take a meander in the fresh air and enjoy nature at its best. Occasionally she would meet a fellow professor, or, more often, a student or two also finding joy in the outdoors.

Today, however, Sadi hadn't been out long when her attention was caught by angry cries. Quickening her pace, Sadi rounded the corner to witness a truly disturbing sight. Within a second Sadi had drawn her own wand, and the fighting students found themselves flung apart by her spell. "What in Merlin's name is going on?" she asked, drawn between disgust and panic.

She looked between the students - one was in her own House, a second year by the name of Alexis Ashwood. The other was less familiar, but in a school as small as Sonora it was fairly easy to put names to faces. She was fairly sure these two were related - the boy was another Ashwood, perhaps a cousin of sorts. He had been physically attacking the girl when Sadi arrived, but the fact that Alexis' wand was drawn and soap bubbles still rested around Mr Ashwood's mouth encouraged Sadi's belief that the attack was not entirely unprovoked. Nevertheless...

"Violence is not tolerated at Sonora," she told the students sternly, "especially not this physical violence of fighting like animals! Wands, please. Now." She held out her hand and waited until their wands had been turned over.

We don't really get along ma'am by Alexis

Things had been going her way. Alexis was starting to get him to listen. Then she let her guard down and allowed him room to think. He spat in her eyes. The soap stung a bit, and she cried out in shock, wiping her eyes. Right after they were clear, this red head found herself being pulled to the ground by her own hair.

He was shouting at her, telling her to take it back. Alexis whimpered. No matter how much she had threatened, tortured, teased, pranked Josiah, he had never physically attacked her before. Sure, a shove out of the way or something like that, but nothing like this! Alexis Ashwood was all talk, but when it came to something besides talking or wand work, she couldn’t lift a finger to defend herself.

“I take it back!” she cried. Honestly, she just knew that her parents talked about PURE a lot, said the family was to support it, and Alexis left it at that. Did she really know it was murder? No. By exterminate, she didn’t think of killing. Her mind went to ‘putting them in their place’. Apparently Josiah didn’t have the same frame of mind. She tried to shove him off of her and could’ve sworn she succeed when they were blasted apart if it wasn’t for the voice that came after.

"What in Merlin's name is going on?"

Alexis looked up at her own head of house, and the tears that had been threatening to appear during the whole ordeal had no problem coming now. Of all the people, it was her head of house. And she couldn’t believe she was crying in front of Josiah! He would never, ever let her live it down.

What would happen now? Would they be taken to the Headmaster? Oh Merlin, would they be expelled?! Mother and father would be so mad. And she could never face Auntie or Uncle again. They would be even worse. After all, it would be partially Alexis’ fault that the heir to the Josiah bloodline was kicked out of school.

She handed her wand over without fighting, seriously hoping Josiah was having this train of thought. Auntie would never leave them be if they got in a bunch of trouble over this. Alexis tried to calm down her sobbing, not very used to crying, and tried to think clearly. She didn’t want mother or father to find out. She hoped Josiah wouldn’t be stupid and would realize that being truthful wasn’t the smartest thing to do in this situation.

Taking one for the team by Josiah

“I take it back!”

Josiah blinked at her. Alexis sounded so… helpless there. He really felt bad at that moment. What was he doing? As horrid as she was, she was still his cousin! He stayed there, numb, as she tried to fight him off. Oh dear, his mother was going to hear about this wasn’t she?

“WOAH!” he yelped, finding himself flung away from Alexis.

"What in Merlin's name is going on?"

“Hey lady! What do you think-?” He broke off, recognizing the air of authority that the older woman resonated. This was no older student like he thought she was. This was a professor. Which one, he wasn’t sure, but he was sure he wasn’t mistaken. She seemed too strict and authoritarian to not be.

"Violence is not tolerated at Sonora, especially not this physical violence of fighting like animals! Wands, please. Now.”

He looked over at Alexis to gauge her reaction. With a gasp of surprise, he saw her crying. Not crocodile tears either. Really real genuine tears. Did he upset her that much? The girl was a horrid, stupid, slimy, idiotic, controlling brat! Did she really have feelings?

“Here, whatever, take it.” he muttered glumly, letting the professor take his wand. Let her keep it for all he cared.

“Hey, miss,” He racked his brains for her name, “Professor Powell right? I know that you are supposed to take both of us in and all, but can you just let Lexi go? The dumb brat didn’t really do anything wrong. I lost my temper. She baited me and all and I attacked her.”

Josiah looked up at Professor Powell. He stood in a well-practiced stance. His feet spread shoulder width apart, he folded his hands behind his back. He stared at her with his best innocent look he could muster. Maybe this was dumb, but he really thought she should let Lexi go. It wasn’t like she was doing anything more than usual. He just got too protective of Hyana, really. \n

Can anyone say 'Detention'? by Professor Powell

If pushed, Sadi would guess this was a family argument that had gotten out of control. Both students handed over their wands without complaint, and seemed to calm down fairly quicky. Sadi was just considering whether she should let them off lightly when Mr Ashwood proposed he be the only one to receive punishment. When would students learn that discipline was not up to them?

"Be that as it may," Sadi replied, though she cast a swift glance at the few remaining soap bubbles, "both of you are old enough to know better." Taunting and baiting was perhaps not as bad as outright fighting, but it was an underhanded way of getting others into trouble, and therefore Sadi considered it to be just as punishable. "You will both serve detention with me this evening. Come to my classroom after dinner. I will return your wands to you then." Sadi thought this was fair - the students would not need their wands for schoolwork druing the rest of the day, and now could not be tempted to use them for less honorable purposes. "And I will be mentioning this incident to your Head of House," she told Mr Ashwood.

"Now I suggest both of you go back to your commons immediately, and perhaps spend some time thinking about how ridiculous your behavior has been today." Sadi waited until the students began the walk back, and she decided to accompany Alexis to make sure she didn't get into any more trouble along the way.
