Yay fuzzy time! [Hyana & Talitha] by Elly Eriksson

As they had arranged during their Care of Magical Creatures lesson, Elly waited for Hyana and Talitha at the entrance to the Cascade Hall. They were headed for her swing where Talitha wanted to tell them something, and seeing as the firsties hadn’t been before then Elly was leading the way. She’d also told Echo and Mere where she was going in case they wanted to come along afterwards. Elly just hoped that if they did come it would be after Talitha had finished, because she didn’t want to be stepping on any toes about privacy issues.

In addition to hearing what Talitha had to say, Elly also hoped that Hyana would talk a bit, too. She had seemed particularly reserved during lessons that day, and quiet in general since midterm. Though she hadn’t ever intended to mother first years, Elly seemed to be getting pretty into it, and she really wanted to make sure Hyana was okay. She was also excited to introduce yet more people to her swing. She was still thinking about building another one – she had seen lots of good spots. She’d have to remember to talk to Saul about it later, because it was Simon who had helped Elly find the stuff to build the current swing.

When the girls joined Elly, she smiled brightly at them. “We’d best get a move on before it gets dark. I don’t want to get you into trouble,” she said, setting off. She walked slower than usual because her legs were considerably longer than the first years’ and she didn’t want to lose them. “My swing’s not far into the maze,” she said, chatting as they went. “Either of you two been around the Labyrinth much?” she asked, just being chatty.

Fuzzy is good, I wish I could apply it to RL by Talitha Cumni

Talitha began to second guess herself. Perhaps she was being stupid thinking this would be as important to Elly and Hyana as it was to her. But she had to talk about it to someone and she so owed the two girls so much. The cool thing about it was that they didn’t even realize they’d done anything special, they were just being themselves.

She hoped they wouldn’t look down on her for her handicap. She was sure they wouldn’t be cruel or anything, but they might be uncomfortable. Hyana, she was sure wouldn’t stop being her friend, but Elly, well if she didn’t want a firstie hanging around, this would be as good an excuse as most to ditch her.

Talitha hoped not. Elly couldn’t be much more than a year older that she was. She just seemed older because she was taller than average and Talitha got the shallow end of the gene pool when it came to height. It’s just that Elly was kind and almost always seemed to be happy. She also loved her hair. Maybe when she got older, Mother would let her change the color of hers. Brown hair was so common, she’d love to have wonderful red hair like that. Anyway, being an only child, Talitha longed for siblings. Elly might make a good big sister if things went well.

In spite of her nerves, she noticed how quiet Hyana had been. Maybe an evening of fresh air and swinging would perk her up. If it was more serious, perhaps she would relax enough to tell us what was bothering her. If nothing else, Talitha hoped that she could help Hyana feel better.

Half jogging to keep up with Elly’s long legs, Talitha crossed her fingers and answered her. “Only with teachers in class.”

So do I. Then I could stay here forever and ever. by Hyana Kamiya

Hyana knew that this meeting was important to Talitha. And they would even get to see Elly's swing! How exciting was that? But she also had gotten a letter that morning from Bryan. How he got ahold of an owl, Hyana truly didn't want to know. But he did. And that scared her.

He had sent her a locket necklace, with a picture of her mother and him together, saying that when she returned that they had big news. And they missed her. At that, she couldn't help but laugh. That must've been big news if they missed her! Before walking out to the gardens, she angrily stuffed the locket into her jeans pocket.

Elly and Talitha didn't need to know about this. It wasn't their problem. Forcing the corners of her mouth into a smile, she ran over to the two of them. "Hi guys!" She greeted happily. Well, she tried to make it sound happy. It sounded more like a cat trying to meow happily while it was being shoved in cold water.

Clearing her throat, she said, "Sorry. Don't know why I sounded like that." There, that was better. She sounded like Hyana. Good. She could hang out with two of her friends for a little while longer, before the summer break. She knew it had to be coming soon. She just didn't want to go home. If her guess was correct, she didn't want to know this big news...

“Only with teachers in class.” She heard Talitha reply to Elly. Hyana realized that she had fallen behind, and quickly forced her legs to move faster. Walking next to Talitha, Hyana took a moment to remember the question. Something about the gardens...oh yeah!

"I wander around sometimes," She replied, "But I've never found your swing. Speaking of, how much furthur is it?" She smiled at her two friends. Hyana really didn't want to worry them. The locket's chain had begun to slip out of her pocket, and she quickly put it back. There had been no time to put it away. She hoped that Talitha, who she was standing right next to, didn't see that. She hoped Elly didn't see it either. Actually, Hyana just hoped that the stupid thing wouldn't fall out.

And ever and ever. by Elly

Elly listened as she walked to Talitha and Hyana’s replies. To Elly’s dismay, Hyana hadn’t cheered up any since the lesson. She was smiling while she talked, but there was a distinctly downcast look about her. Elly didn’t feel that she knew Hyana well enough to ask what was wrong, but perhaps later she could offer some words of encouragement and support, just in case Hyana felt she wanted to share whatever was on her mind.

“How much further is it?” Hyana asked.

“Oh, just round the corner,” Elly said, grinning at her. Then she led the girls round the hedging and gestured ahead of her. They were at the edge of a small clearing, in which stood an old Ironwood tree, leant over so far that one of the large branches was horizontal. It was from this bough that the swing – a thick plank of wood secured by a great deal of rope – hung. There was a sandy patch of mud on the ground under the seat where users had kicked away the grass. The worn wooden seat was easily big enough for two people to sit on, so Elly indicated for Talitha and Hyana to take a seat while she leant up against the smooth bark of the tree.

“It’s not much, but I built it almost myself,” she said. “What d’you think?”

Amen by Talitha

Talitha noticed that Hyana’s smiles never really seemed to make it to her eyes. She wondered what she could do to help. Talitha really liked her a lot. She was always sweet and kind whenever Talitha had been around her and a person liked that deserved to feel good inside. Perhaps as she got to know her better…

As they rounded the corner, Talitha’s eyes beheld The Swing. Elly let Hyana and her sit on it first. Because they had to sit so close together, it gave Talitha a chance to put her hand on Hyana’s back and send a silent message of friendship to a girl who might not accept a hug. Mother always said that the touch of a caring friend sent comforting magic.

She looked up into the branches of the tree the swing was tied to. This was amazing! There was something about a homemade object that beat the boughten stuff all to pieces. It was a great place, a place to think and to dream. The swing rocked a bit from their combined weight and Talitha let the toe of her shoe drag back and forth with the gentle motion.

“It’s not much, but I built it almost myself. What d’you think?” Elly asked.

“This is…Wow!” Talitha’s eyes shone at Elly, grateful she‘d shared it with them. “Not much? Are you kidding? This…This is great! You made this yourself?”

Don't forget the Hallelujah! by Hyana

She was worrying them. Hyana knew it. She wanted to smack herself. This was supposed to be for Talitha. This was not about her. As they arrived at the swing, Hyana smiled. She had fallen behind again, but that was okay. It gave her time to take a deep breath, let it out, then walk over to her friends with a smile.

"Thanks Elly." She said as she sat next to Talitha. Hyana gazed at the branches, glad that they were holding up. It was really a cool thing, Elly's swing. In her daydreaming state, she almost jumped at Talitha's touch. Almost. She turned her head towards Talitha and smiled. For some odd reason, she didn't mind being touched. Not this time.

“It’s not much, but I built it almost myself. What d’you think?” Elly asked the two of them. Talitha was amazed by it, and Hyana could most definitly agree.

"It is amazing Elly." Hyana agreed with a grin. "Did you really make it yourself?" Talitha had sort of a childish air about her at the moment. Hyana giggled. It was good that Talitha was having a good time. Lightly touching her pocket, she checked for the locket again. Yup, still there.

"So..." Hyana trailed off. Maybe Talitha wanted to take her time. "What did you want to talk about Talitha?" She hoped that she wasn't being too pushy. But maybe whatever Talitha would say would make her feel better.

I heard there was a sacred chord... by Elly

Elly laughed at the girls’ responses. She was glad they liked her swing. “Almost by myself,” she said. “Saul and Simon Tellerman helped me a bit,” she admitted. She half wanted to tell them about how she wanted to build another swing, and that she had already spied some good spots. However, this was Talitha’s moment. She obviously had something important to say.

“What did you want to talk about, Talitha?” Hyana asked. Elly looked down at both of them, and suddenly realised that might seem a little condescending, or maybe overbearing. Not wishing to upset either of the girls, she slid down the trunk and sat on the dusty ground instead, pulling her knees up to her chest and leaning her back against the thick tree trunk.

“Whatever you want to say, we want to listen,” Elly said, smiling kindly and in a far more toned down fashion than usual. Since she had met Talitha, Elly got the impression that sharing was difficult for her, and so this was probably a big step for her friend. Therefore, she tried her utmost not to fidget as she titled her gaze up at Talitha (glancing occasionally to Hyana to check on her, too), and waited for her to speak.

I walk through the garden alone... by Talitha

Talitha got up from the swing and started to pace as she thought how to put into words what she needed to share. It wasn’t like she wanted special attention, but she knew these two deserved to know the whole story. Suddenly she felt like the lead in some silly melodrama. She wished she could just tell them to forget it, it wasn’t all that important, but if ‘It’ happened around them, she just didn’t want to lie or hide anymore. If Elly and Hyana still wanted to be friends after she told them, then at least two people would understand.

Not wanting to look at them for fear she would chicken out, she plopped down on her tummy in the grass near the two girls and started pulling individual blades of the turf out and began tying knots in them.

“I know you’ve noticed I wasn’t myself last term.” Talitha began. “You see, I would have been home schooled until I came of age. It’s tradition where I come from. But…I have hyper-active accidental magic and it was getting out of control. So after ‘It’ almost killed a boy, it was decided to send me to Sonora to hopefully learn how to control it. They don’t know if I’ll outgrow it…

“Anyway, last fall, I was so homesick, so scared ‘It’ would happen and then everyone would either be scared of me or hate me… well I just closed in on myself. I don’t even know why I tried the Charms club, but I’m glad I did. Because when everyone was so nice to me, especially you two… well, I guess I just sort of woke up and saw how stupid I was being. I know this sounds dumb… but I just needed to thank you for what you did that day.”

Talitha didn’t look up. She didn’t want to see what was in their faces. Their tone of voice would tell her what they thought. No matter how they responded, what they said, at least the story was out. Talitha was ready to face the consequences, good or bad.

Musical reference or a way to confuse me? by Hyana

Hyana watched Talitha's nervous pacing. Did they do something wrong? Say something wrong? It was Talitha who wanted to tell them something. Was it so difficult. Sticking her hand in her pocket, she held onto the locket. She understood that it was difficult to say things sometimes.

"Go ahead Talitha." Hyana said kindly. She tried to encourage her friend. Talitha finally started playing with the grass. As she began to speak, Hyana pulled herself all the way onto the swing, letting the wind move it.

Accidental magic? That was why she was so twitchy at Charms Club. And she was worried that they would get hurt. Talitha was such a good friend. And trusting too. As Talitha continued, even thanking them for being themselves, Hyana felt herself moving to her friend. At the end of her story, Hyana gently wrapped her arms around her friend.

"And you're welcome Talitha." She whispered. Pulling away, she smiled at Talitha. "I don't see why you should be scared. You're a wonderful person, and if someone doesn't like you, that's their own problem. It has nothing to do with you."

She touched the locket again. "Besides, you and Elly helped me too. I think I can get used to the whole touchy thing, seeing as I just hugged you. And it's nice to have friends too. It's something I'm not really used to." She smiled at both Elly and Talitha.

Maybe she could tell them...not the whole story, just a little bit. Like her mom and Bryan, the locket. Maybe...

Either. Both. Take your pick. by Elly

Elly had to admit that she got a bit nervous when Talitha stalled and then averted her gaze. Apparently she needn’t have worried though, as it turned out Talitha just wanted to tell them about accidental magic. Well everyone had done accidental magic at some time, hadn’t they? Elly recalled a conversation with Echo about how they’d both fallen out of trees and not been hurt. It seemed to Elly that perhaps Talitha just had it a bit more than others, maybe. She didn’t know about the boy almost being killed though – if it was accidental then Talitha probably shouldn’t feel bad about it, but Elly knew that was easier said than done. The point was that Talitha saw it as a problem, and so Elly didn’t hesitate in offering her support.

“No need to thank us,” Elly said truthfully. “I’m glad to help. If you ever need me, Talitha, I'll be here”

Then Hyana gave Talitha a quick hug, and Elly smiled at them. It was a good day that those two bumped into each other at the Charms club. “And I’m glad to have helped you too, Hyana,” Elly said, her smile broadening into a grin.

“Come on,” she said suddenly, pushing herself up from the ground. “Group hug, I insist. Bonding and all that.” Elly firmly believed that more often than not hugs could solve everything. She grinned and put one arm around each of the firsties, hugging them lightly. She hoped that in time Hyana would feel comfortable about whatever it was that had been bugging her, too.

Ah.......spread the love by Talitha

Talitha wasn’t really surprised that these two girls still accepted her after her confession. She wasn’t even surprised that they didn’t seem to understand how severe her accidental magic was because they weren’t there when she set her own bed on fire or almost killed the neighborhood bully that was picking on a little kid. They didn’t know how scarey it could become. Still, she had no doubt that even if it got bad again, Hyana and Elly would still stand by her and that meant the world to her.

What did surprise Talitha was Hyana coming over to her and putting her small arm around her. For Hyana to reach out like that was…well, it was awesome! Talitha felt as if waves of healing magic passed the her soul, soothing the bits of doubts that still clouded her thinking. In her mind, Bat soared high circling and swooping, telling her she was in the right place.

When Elly insisted on a group hug, Talitha melted in the arm that enveloped her and put her arm around Hyana, sending the warm feelings along. This was a wonderful place to be. A warm, safe place. Her eyes smarted with tears of relief and joy.

“When I came here, I thought I was being punished.” Talitha choked out. “In my people’s history, children were taken by the government and put in ‘boarding schools’, forced to forget their language, their culture, their parents. I thought if my own people could send me away to this school, I must be an awful person!

“But that hasn’t happened here at all. I just have a bigger family!” Talitha smiled up at Elly and across at Hyana. The only way to tell her friends how she felt deep, deep down inside was to tighten the hug all the more.

Talitha was happy. And that made Hyana happy. Elly insisted on a group hug, and for once, Hyana didn't mind one bit. "Of course!" She exclaimed happily. She wrapped her arms around Elly and Talitha, giggling. They probably looked so stupid, so silly, but she didn't care. This was so nice.

Talitha explained even furthur about her fear of Sonora, and Hyana let Talitha tighten the hug. This was good. Hugs were good. Maybe people were right when they said hugs solve anything. At the mention of a bigger family, Hyana felt a stab of guilt. Talitha was sharing everything, and Hyana just hid behind a mask. She didn't let people know her. Not Josiah, not Caedence, no one.

"Well..." She began. "Guys, I'm sorry I've been down lately. I haven't meant to worry you." She pulled away from the hug and pulled the locket out of her pocket.

"I got this locket," she also pulled out the letter, "And the letter in the mail today. I think that my mom's going to marry this guy named Bryan." Then it all began pouring out.

"I don't like him very much. I don't like going home. I like Sonora better. My mom doesn't except the fact I'm a witch. I guess it's too much for her muggle mind to handle. She's making me go to Japan or something like that over the summer. I don't really want to. She's making me get rid of my puffskein too. Well, Bryan said I have to. I just don't want them to get married." She covered her mouth, blushing. "S-sorry...I guess I just...needed to tell somebody." She laughed. She handed them the letter and the locket. Hopefully what she shared would be accepted too. Anyway, it wasn't even half of the story.

*dances* by Elly

Elly hadn’t been at all prepared for the emotional rollercoaster this meeting was turning into. Talitha was such a sweet person, and Elly felt truly delighted she was considered her friend. Hyana, too, was a lovely girl; Elly felt a lot like she had adopted the role of older sister for both of the first years, a role which she intended to play to the very best of her ability.

Pulling back from the group hug, Elly turned her attention to Hyana, who, it seemed, might be about to share something, too. And share she did. Elly listened with her full attention, her big brown eyes focussed entirely on Hyana, widening with each word she said. Her mother didn’t like her being a witch? Well Elly had that one covered herself, but she got the impression that it was more of a problem for Hyana. After all, Elly hadn’t ever gotten on well with her mother, anyway. Then there was this Bryan who Hyana didn’t like. Elly couldn’t imagine her parents ever being with anyone else except each other. That in itself must be weird, but if Hyana didn’t even like the guy then that must be really tough.

Elly numbly accepted the locket and letter Hyana passed to her without really looking at them. “Hyana, it’s okay,” Elly said gently. “You’ve got nothing to apologise for.” She didn’t understand exactly how Hyana was feeling, or what her main worries were, but she could tell that her friend hadn’t been herself recently, and it was unlike Hyana to blurt out problems in that way. Unsure of what to say, Elly looked down at the locket. It really was very nice. She didn’t read the letter, though – she didn’t know Hyana that well, really, and it felt like she would be invading her privacy. “It’s a lovely locket,” she said, passing the jewellery to Talitha for a look, and handing the letter back to Hyana.

Elly had felt far more comfortable hearing about Caedence’s problems, firstly because she’d known Caedence a lot longer, and secondly because she could do something to help. With Talitha and Hyana, though, all she could do was just be there for them, but that didn’t feel like it was enough. “Er, my Mum doesn’t like me being a witch, either,” Elly said, offering Hyana a smile.

*applaudes the show* by Talitha

Talitha looked at the photos in the locket Elly handed her. Hyana’s mother and Bryan were fairly good looking, but something wasn’t right. Perhaps it was because it was a muggle photograph and the faces were frozen. Perhaps it was what Hyana said about her mother not liking her being a witch. Whatever the reason, she definitely did not like the people in that locket. They had cold, heartless eyes.

Talitha repressed a shudder as she closed it and heard Elly say that her mother didn’t like Elly’s magic either. It was very strange. Talitha couldn’t imagine any parent who wouldn’t be thrill to find their child was magical. The way Elly said it was different from the way Hyana did. Elly sounded like her mother was having trouble adjusting to the idea. Hyana sounded sad and scared even though she laughed. She handed back the locket wondering what she should say. One thing was for sure. She was a big baby. Feeling sorry for herself when she had so many good things in her life.

At least her folks wouldn’t make her give away her puffskein if she liked them. Who could be so mean? Who couldn’t not accept their kids for what they were? A dark thought flitted across Talitha’s mind and made her stomach knot up. She didn’t want to ask the question that was forming on the tip of her tongue. Hyana was so shy, she’d probably run scared from it but Talitha really liked her and wanted to help.

“Hyana?” she whispered fearfully. “Does your mother punish you ‘cause you’re a witch?”
