Keeping it together...for now by Wendy Holland

OOC: (Shortly before the summer break between SA41 and SA42) BIC:

It was strange how much things could change. Thirteen years since she'd left Sonora. Thirteen years since her parents had disowned her. She fingered the heavy envelope that had arrived by owl, and although she had been the one to solicit it, the letter inside was both terrifying and exciting all at once. Slitting open the envelope, the parchment inside was thick, handmade no doubt, as pretentious as the life she'd left behind, and the ink was black as night.

Dearest Wendy,

Ryan's calligraphy had improved since she'd seen it last, although he'd been barely fourteen at the time, and teenage boys weren't exactly known for their proclivity with a quill.

I admit myself surprised to hear from you, though not displeased. I'd somewhat resigned myself to not hearing from you until it was time for the inheritance to be handed down, but it came and went and you...never showed up. Three years since, and an unfamiliar owl drops a letter on Father's old desk, demanding my breakfast of jammy biscuits. Given the lack of decorum, I should have suspected it was you.

Wendy felt a sinking in her stomach. Inheritance. Her parents were gone. She wouldn't have gotten anything, anyway, not the way she'd left, and she didn't want it anyhow. She couldn't place where the sting was coming from, if it was shame, or sadness, or pridefulness, or possibly...relief? The corner of her mouth lifted to see that Ryan had either given in to Americanized breakfasts of fluffy white biscuits with jam, or was legitimately eating cookies for breakfast.

As to the content of your letter, you've guessed by this point that our parents have passed. Mother went first, four years ago last winter. Father followed shortly after. Some Muggle disease akin to Dragon Pox. They refused to see a Muggle doctor for treatment.

On a lighter note, I am doing well. I was married shortly out of school, to Astrid Minuette, of the Toronto Minuettes. Do you remember her? She was in the year behind me. We have a daughter, Kerri, who is set to start at Sonora next year....

Wendy slid from her chair to the floor with a THUD. Her baby brother had a baby, and she didn't even know about it? What sort of sister was she? Selfish, stupid, prideful. Sure, she'd tried to write to Ryan behind their parents' backs, but seeing as she never got a reply, she'd figured either her parents were intercepting the mail, or Ryan just didn't want to talk to her. So she had given up.

A knock on her bedroom door made her jump.

"Hey, are you ready to go?" Russell poked his head in, "Lyla's due back in an hour, we're kind of cutting it close."

"Yeah," Wendy replied, hastily hauling herself up from her pity party, "Just need my shoes."

OOC: Lyla will have talked a little bit to Samara/Gwendolyn about this, mainly to see if they know anything about the West Coast Stonehursts
