Captain Jose Hernandez

Jose looked over the sign-up sheet in his hand. There were eight names listed, which was good, but there were two keepers, four chasers, and only one beater, which wasn’t as good. The missing beater, Cassy Brooks, had been a new transfer last year and he hadn’t spotted her in the common room yet, so maybe she had transferred back out again.

Jose knew how that went. He’d spent most of his elementary years jumping from one boarding school to the next. Sonora was the exception, not the rule, and after three full years here now, he believed it was easily the longest he’d ever lived in one place in his life even if you added together all the time he spent at his family’s usual campgrounds.

But Cassy seemed to be missing - with luck she and anybody else interested in the team would show up today even if their name wasn’t on the list - and he had six other people to arrange into Pecari’s House Team for this year.

“Hey, Guys,” he greeted his new team once everyone who seemed to be coming had arrived. “For the one or two of you who don’t know who I am, my name is Jose Hernandez.” Despite the name, and the appearance he’d inherited from his Mexican father, Jose’s words lacked any kind of Hispanic accent to them. He’d been born and raised in California and his ability to speak Spanish was spotty at best. “I’m Pecari’s Quidditch Captain, and that,” he pointed at Mel, “is our Assistant Captain, Demelza Eagle.”

“According to the list, we pretty much just have Keeper try-outs today. Who’s Sophia?” When the first year identified herself, Jose nodded at her. “Hi, welcome to the team. Everyone, this is Sophia. Sophia, this is everyone.” He grinned a moment, then went through introductions, pointing at each of the returning players, “Mel, Neal, Delilah, Dorian, Tristan.”

“And, finally, Starbuck,” he pointed at the last of the third year girls, “has been our Keeper since she started, so the two of you are going to be trying out for keeper.”

“In Chaser, we currently have myself, Delilah, Tristan, and Neal. Unless any of the other three of you,” he looked mostly at Neal since Delilah's family was barely tolerating her playing Quidditch at all and Tristan (Jose was fairly sure) seemed to think he’d someday be a professional Chaser, “want to volunteer to be Beater, I’ll take the empty slot.” He’d never played Beater before, but, at fourteen, he was the team’s oldest player (even if he wasn’t any bigger than most of the third years) and figured he’d be better at it than the little first year or Starbuck who didn’t have the best history of working well with Mel.

“Okay, so do we have anyone here not on the list?” He pointed at Mel, “You guys should talk to Mel and we’ll sort out how to work you into the try outs. We’ll start with Keeper though. Starbuck, you’re up first, and then Sophia will go. All the rest of us are going to try to throw a Quaffle past you into one of the goal hoops.”

OOC: Tristan hasn’t officially signed up as of the time of this posting, but I’m just going to assume he meant to given that Quidditch is his be-all-and-end-all reason for existing. Okay, I’m off to my own wedding and then my honeymoon, so Mel’s going to have to take over from here. Everyone be good for her. Mel, if you have to god-mod Jose, consider yourself having my official permission.

Demelza Eagle

August 29, 2010 3:56 PM
Demelza was completely ecstatic about try-outs. She could learn her teammates names! She knew Starbuck and Delilah because they roomed with her, but she most certainly didn't remember the other people! This would be a very good opportunity to try and recollect old faces. She really was starting to wish that she had her memories back, because when people knew her and she didn't know them she found it very frustrating! Oh well. It was just like starting over, she guessed.

With her long, straight, chocolate brown hair tied on a ponytail, she hummed as she looked for her broom. She was very glad that she wasn't riding her new broom when she fell off, because that broom ended up being totally demolished. Her Cleansweep 20 was safely put away at home, too new for her to bring half-way across the world at the time. But now she had it with her at Sonora. Demelza didn't remember where or when she received it, but she realized that it did look quite new. She also had a beaters bat that didn't look like it was second hand, but it wasn't exactly new, along with gloves that looked just as old as the bat. Her eyebrows knitted together as she tried to remember when she obtained these items. Nothing came to mind.

Demelza wore a yellow tee-shirt with a very wide neck that showed the straps to her black tank-op underneath. With the black compression shorts she was wearing, it made her look like a bumblebee! She smiled and skipped to the pitch, still humming at the same time. She was so excited she could have mounted her broom right then and there and flew to the pitch, but she decided that that might get her in trouble. She didn't remember if flying in the halls was permitted.

She grinned at everyone at the meeting, recognizing a few of them by their face. When the Captain started speaking, Demelza listened very hard for information she needed. The Captains name was Jose. And theAssistant Captain was Demelza Eagle. Oh, hey, that was her! She smiled and waved at everyone present, then looked back at Jose. He mentioned a Sophia that even he didn't know! Demelza looked around, and noticed a younger girl who was identified as such. And then Demelza was almost lost. "Mel," (she liked that he called her that), "Neal, Delilah, Dorian, Tristan, and finally, that's Starbuck."

Mel tried to follow his hand to each player he pointed at, implanting their faces and name into her brain. Then he explained how the try-outs were to go and told her to instruct the other players besides Starbuck and Sophia what to do (she was getting good at this name-thingy). Personally, she wanted Starbuck t beat Sopiha, because as Jose said, Starbuck was much more experienced than Sophia! Besides, Starbuck was her roommate! But she would be fair and all that stuff. Taking the lead, she grabbed a quaffle and mounted her broom after Sophia took her place on one end. To the other chasers with her, she instructed, "Um, how about we each take a shot on Sophia, and then one on Starbuck, and whoever saves the greater majority of them is the new keeper. After that, we can decide who wants to be a beater with me!" She grinned at her fellow players, and then kicked hard off the ground zooming several feet up n the air.

Glaring at the first year (not in a mean way but in an intimidating way), she swung her arm back and threw it as hard as she could into the right hoop with her dominate and left arm. Demelza was very strong and had a lot of muscles: a perfect built for a beater. When she was 11 she could hurt someone by how hard she threw the quaffle. Now, she just turned 14 a few days ago and could throw much harder. If she wanted to, the third year Pecari figured that she could kill someone with her bat! But she was peaceful and didn't like hurting people... with the exception of when it came to Quidditch, of course.

Sophia Jamison

Sophie had never been any more nervous than she was at this exact moment. In not long at all, she would be trying out for a position on the Quidditch team. And another student was trying out for it, too. An older student. With experience. Though highly confident in her own playing ability, Sophia was terrified. It wasn’t that she was arrogantly cocky, just enough confidence that she knew her own ability was indeed more than proficient. Nimbus 2009 in her arms, held tight for strength, the first year was on her way.

Nervously, Sophie found herself fidgeting with her broomstick and hot pink gloves while the team captain, Jose, introduced the assist captain, Demelza. She seemed like a nice person. Sophia felt bad about having to try out against another Keeper; she didn’t want to knock anyone out of the spot they already had, but at the same time, the blonde felt like she was born to play, and she had to follow her heart. “Who’s Sophia?” Jose asked. Short and swift Sophie shot her small hand up and identified herself with, “Right here!” After he introduced a few more kids, he came to a girl, Starbuck. This was the other Keeper. Sophie felt her stomach flip with anxiety, and her grip on her broomstick tightened involuntarily.

“You guys should talk to Mel and we’ll sort out how to work you into the try outs. We’ll start with Keeper though. Starbuck, you’re up first, and then Sophia will go. All the rest of us are going to try to throw a Quaffle past you into one of the goal hoops.” Darn it! Sophie had to wait until after Starbuck; she had to watch and see how amazing Starbuck would be! Now she was more than nervous. She was terrified!

When it was her turn, Sophie hopped on her Nimbus and flew off towards the hoops. Before taking her position, she zoomed about, weaving around the rings, even pulling herself in tightly and flying through them each once. It was her way of getting acquainted with her surroundings. Every hoop, she had learned over the years, was different. This one was a little bit bent inward, giving it less of a target area, or that one was bent outwardly, making the hole bigger. Then she settled into her spot, ready for this task of defending the rings, her rings.

Sophie saw Demelza (Mel) glaring at her. It was all good-spirited, Sophie knew, so she returned the glare obviously meant for intimidation. Sophie was already supremely intimidated and nervous didn’t get intimidated so easily. Soon, Mel threw the Quaffle towards one of the hoops, and Sophie flew into action. Being small aerodynamically designed, Sophie found herself reaching it before it could pass through the ring, and she swatted the Quaffle away from the hoop and towards her legs with the back of her broomstick, then kicked it back towards Mel. So far, so good…

Starbuck Gregory

September 06, 2010 1:24 PM
Starbuck was on cloud nine, Farrah and her were already planning their winter vacations. Star had already made up her mind that this winter she was going to tell Farrah what she actually was and where she went to school. She finished her letter to Farrah and pushed it under her pillow as she began to dress for Quidditch try-outs. She put on the brown shorts she had bought specially for this day, and a gold t-shirt. She grabbed her broom and made her way down to the Pitch.

The rest of the team seemed to be already and Star smiled at them. She looked over at Mel; she had heard that she had lost her memory or something. Star wondered how that worked, maybe since Mel couldn’t remember now they could become friends again. It would be great to feel normal with her again. She shrugged and ran a hand through her red hair.

When Jose began talking Starbuck smiled, she had been the Keeper two years in a row and she loved the position. When she heard that they were having Keeper tryouts her face suddenly lost the smile. Why should she have to compete for her spot? It had been her’s for two years and she wasn’t horrible at all! She rolled her eyes when he explained the tryout. It was simple and she had blocked most of the people on the teams throws before this was going to be cake.

With that she got on her broom and flew up to the goal posts ready for someone to throw the Quaffle.
