Alexander took a glance at the clock that hung up high on the wall at the back of the classroom. It was time for their next period. Alexander stood up and tried to make an annoucement. Seeing that the class was making too much noise, Alexander raised his wand in the air and shot a mini violet firework into the air. The whole class turned their heads to face Alexander. That was a quick way to get attention, Alexander thought. Now, to get with his annoucement.

"Class is now dismissed. Pack your things and proceed to your next class. Zack," He looked at the boy to get his attention, "please stay behind. Everyone else, go on to your next lesson."

Alexander waited for the last of the pupils to move off, after which he closed the door and gave his wand a flick and muttered "locomotor chair." A chair shook and flew into the air and landed in front of Alexander's table. "Take a seat, Zack," he said, gesturing to the bewitched chair. Alexander returned to his own seat and started the conversation.

"We have to get about your wand business quickly. So, here's the plan. I will seek permission from the headmistress to let you go to Diagon Alley to purchase your wand. I will accompany you there. We will settle the transportation matter soon. But now," Alexander waved his wand and a dummy walked towards the table. Alexander left his seat and walked towards a dummy and prised the chopstick from between the dummy's fingers and handed it to Zack.

"I'm not asking you to join me for lunch, don't be mistaken." Alexander said with a smile. "As you didn't get a chance to practise the spell, you will practise it now, using this chopstick. Judging by the astounded look on Zack's face, Alexander concluded that he must have thought him insane. "The chopsticks have been bewitched to act like real wands, so you can use it just like a real wand. Now, the incantation is Flipendo. And now," the dummy shrugged and started moving. "Let the duel begin."\n\n

a chopstick?! by Zack Dill

Zack was, first and foremost, mortified. He was moderately grateful that the teacher didn't mention to the rest of the class that he couldn't even buy a real wand, but mostly, he was just mortified at being singled out on the very first day of class to 'stay behind'.

Because he hadn't made a large disturbance that would cause people to think he was a troublemaker, there were really only two assumptions he could assume they were making about him. Either he was stupid, or he was already trying to become a teacher's pet. Neither of which did he want anyone to be thinking about him.

Sullenly and wishing desperately that he was among those getting up and leaving, he remained in his seat, doing his best to disappear into his chair. This evidently didn't work, because once his classmates were gone, the teacher addressed him.

He had no intention of leaving his current chair and taking the one that just flew across the room (he preferred flying chairs to have seatbelts), so he remainded stubbornly where he was.

Nodding in neccessary agreement to the plan to get him a new wand, he swore further revenge against that conman who sold him the fake for putting him through such 'special treatment'.

Then, then, the teacher said something that made absolutely no sense. Now he did jump to his feet, and scowl at the man. "If you can make the freakin' chopstick act like a wand, what the he-ck is wrong with using this?" he held up his fake, which really wasn't all that different from a chopstick.\n\n

yes, a chopstick. by Prof. Zephyrflame

Alexander was trying to convince himself that he did not hear what Zack said. Well, it's normal for a person who just got swindled to become angry at the thought of it, Alexander thought to himself. So, I'll just take it as if I didn't hear that. Now, to get back to our conversation.

"Now, if I were to bewitch that fake wand you are holding, the power to cast spells would only last for about one hour. I can't have all the teachers reinforcing the power of the wand for you every one hour! And, you won't be able to cast the spell on yourself without a wand."

Hoping what he just rattled off would make sense to the boy, Alexander got to the teaching part.

"Now, if you remember how to cast the spell from page twelve of your textbook, can I get you to perform the jinx on the dummy now?"\n\n

Well, he guessed that made sense. There was probably some kind of Conservation of Magic law that followed the same principle as Conservation of Energy. The chopstick was probably like a battery or something. You could charge it up with magic, but it didn't generate its own. Giving the chopstick a final dubious look, he pointed it at the dummy and said, "Flipendo Dummy," with all the enthusiasm of answering his mom's 'hi, honey, how was school?'

He was not terribly surprised when nothing happened. He was, after all, using a chopstick, battery charge notwithstanding. He'd seen TV shows from the sixties with more believable props. Beyond which, in all truth, he wasn't entirely convinced that all the magic he'd seen to this point wasn't just some really impressive special effects. Though, in magic's defense, he didn't think even Candid Camera went to this much trouble for a practical joke.

He frowned up at the teacher, wishing he could get a growth spurt soon. "It doesn't work."\n\n
