Jonah Hennipen

December 03, 2004 4:08 PM
As Jonah sat and waited for the professor to finish, he wondered vaguely why they were not having a theory lesson first thing, instead of starting out with the actual spells.

Get a grip, Joe he thought, mentally slapping himself that would be so BORING!,

He looked about. There weren't enough dummies to go around, and waiting would take forever, so he would have to improvise.

He set his textbook so it was standing up on the edge of his desk. Carefully, he took aim. "Flippendo book!"

He succeeded in knocking his book over, but unfortunently, he also set it on fire. A cinder drifted to the desk in front of him, and landed in a 's hair, singing it. She lept up shrieking.\n\n

Sally cried out, realizing that her hair was on fire. She grabbed a nearby handkerchief, and suceeded in smothering the flames. She looked at her long blond hair, saw that there wasn't really any bad damage, and then turned around, to see an embarrassed looking boy.

"I'm Sally Porter," she said in a slight texan drawl. "I'm in Aladren. I'm so glad to see that I'm not the klutz at this school. Don't worry, no harm done. Who are you?" SHe grinned, and stuck out her hand.\n\n

"Hey," he said sheepishly, shaking Sally's hand "Sorry about that. I'm Jonah Hennipen, and I'm in Teppenpaw."

"I suppose I should have waited for the dummies. I'm from Wisconsin- let me guess, you're from Texas?" He grinned, and waited for Sally's response.\n\n

"Ya, I am," she admitted. "Let me guess, could you tell by my great intelligence at figuring out who was the culprit? Or was it the accent?

"They do get worse then mine, believe it or not. And it really is no problem. I've been looking for an excuse to cut my hair for ages. Plus, I'm probably going to do the exact same thing soon. Muggleborn, klutz. Doesn't sound like a good combination."

Then she smiled almost shyly, and said, "You know what, Jonah? I think we could be good friends."\n\n

"Yeah," Jonah agreed "I think we could. Did you say you're Muggleborn? I'm halfblood- Mom's a Muggle, Dad's a wizard. My siblings- twins- might be showing up here next year if the government doesn't build that one school under Lake Superior they're thinking about," he paused, "So. . . you like the place so far? And what's your family like? And- Oops! I think the teacher is starting to get mad. You want to pair up? We can talk while we practice."\n\n

Sally looked over at the teacher, and saw that he indeed was given them an exasperated look. "That would be great." SHe got a dummy, and pulled it over to a clear spot.

"I've got 3 sisters and 2 brother. I;m the youngest, and the only one whose had any magic whatsoever, and boy were they jealous when they found out.

"It's pretty nice here s far, but I'm afraid that I'm going to be hopeless at everything, or that they made a mistake. If none of the rest of my family has magic, how do I know I wasn't a fluke or something?"

Noticing the teacher was still glaring, she plucked up her courage, pointed her wand at the dummy, and shouted the incantation. The dummy rocked back and forth a bit, but nothing happened.

"See what i mean?" she said quietly. "Everyone else can do it but me."\n\n

"That's not true." Jonah said stubbornly. "First off, half of these people are still setting stuff on fire, like I did." He gestured vaguely around the room, where other students were stuggling with their dummies. "Second, Muggleborns are proven to be just as strong, magically, as other wizards. My uncle- that's my dad's cousin- studies that sort of thing, so i ought to know."

He leveled his wand at the dummy "Flipenda dummy!" he cried, the words slipping out wrong. The dummy proceeded to do a backflip and land on its feet. Jonah blinked then said "Well, wasn't quite what I tried for, but it was COOL! Wasn't it cool, Sally?"\n\n

Sally smiled thankfully. "Oh yes, that was some mad skill. And thanks for telling me all that. With all my siblings, I have always been compared to them, and there's always at least one whose better. So, I have a few problems with feeling bad about myself.

"And you're right. Did you see that girl who just broke the window?" Concentrating as hard as she could, she shouted the incantation one more time.

Then, to her astonishement, it worked. The dummy rocked back and forth, and then flew backwards, knocking into the wall.

"I did it," Sally whispered. "I did something my siblings can't do. I'm different.\n\n

"Sweet! It rocks to be you!" Jonah cried, slapping her a high-five. "Now I have to get it right- can't let a do better than me!" He grinned, and winked to show he was joking. For the third time he took aim."Flippendo dummy!"

The dummy fell. Its head severed from its body and skid to the opposite side of the room. Several people had to jump away to avoid getting hit with it. the head landed in the pile of broken glass from the recently-busted window.

"Hey, can someone toss that back to us?" Jonah called to the people working in that general vicinity.

Flora Blackwood

December 03, 2004 6:56 PM
Flora walked into the classroom with a trip in her step, falling almost flat on her face. "God, can I not even WALK properly?" She muttered to herself, swiping a few dirty blonde hairs and shoving them crudely into her messy bun at the back of her head.

Suddenly, she realized that there were others in the room. Why, she'd been so sure that she would've been the first! Okay, that wouldn't have made any sense at all. Flora was not one to race to class - and she was most certainly not good at any classes besides this one. Unless you were to count Quidditch as a class.

"Oh, sorry," she said with a smile, picking up the books she'd dropped. It was Sally once again, the girl she'd met in the Cascade Hall. Great. "Am I... interrupting something?" She said this last part with a mischievious grin. "I'm Flora, by the way. I don't think I know you."

Being from Rhode Island, she didn't have that much of an accent - not one that she could find, anyway. Others were constantly talking about how strange she spoke, but really, she would've never guessed.\n\n

"No, you are NOT 'interrupting anything'" said Jonah decidedly. "We paired up because there weren't enough dummies to go around!" He glared.

"And I'm Jonah Hennipen. Do you need to practice with us? There aren't enough dummies to go around. But whatever you end up doing, don't practice on your textbook." He nodded sagely, as if this were a piece of profound advice.\n\n

Sally felt a bit hurt. She had thought that Jonah had been her friend, or at least on the way to becoming one. But obviously he wasn't.

"Yeah, I would advise that too," she remarked. "Genius over there," she nodded at Jonah, "set my hair on fire. But sure, come pracice with us." She looked over at the 3 or so dummies that no one was using, and felt depressed. Guys were always the same. \n\n

Jonah, completely oblivious to how his words had affected Sally, turned back to the dummy. He set it back on its feet, then realized that is was still decapitated.

"Hey, is anyone going to chuck the head back?" he called over. Then, shrugging, he trotted over to try and fetch it himself.\n\n

Sally was shocked. How could anyone be that oblivious? she wondered to herself.

"Can you believe him?" she asked Flora. "He doesn't even realize that what he said was mean. I think I'm going to go work on my own. If he asks, please explain to him what he did."

However, she waited until he got back. "Ya know, you could have just gone and gotten a spare one. They are over there. Only, since you seem to be so insistent on "They didn't have enough dummies," perhaps I'll go get my own. Have fun." she called out sarcastically, and went as far as she could on the opposite side of the room.

Maybe if he apologized, she'd forgive him. But she woulld not without him doing something.\n\n

Jonah blinked. Oops. . . he had really screwed this one up. He stood still for a second, then followed Sally.

"Hey- hey, Sally!" he called. He gulped, then said "Hey- I'm. . . sorry. I wasn't trying to insult you. I do like you. -As a friend!" he added the last part hastily, realized what he had almost said. "And I. . . I'm sorry." He hung his head.\n\n

Sally was shocked. Apparently the boy wasn't a total failure.

"Hm, let's see how this situation could turn. I could forgive you, or I could just ignore you for the rest of our days. Do you have any idea how much that hurt? You made it sound like talking to me, or partnering with me was some sort of punishment. What was the big deal with what Flora said, by the way? it was just a joke."

She stared at him for a minute. "Fine, I forgive you, if you'll tell me what got you so riled up." She sat staring at him, tapping her foot impatiently.\n\n

"I'm. . . sorry. I didn't mean for it to sound that way. I just didn't think before I said anything, that's why it sounded mean. Forgive me, please? I really didn't mean that." Jonah was uneasy, unsure now whether she would accept his apology.\n\n
