Trip Down Memory Lane [VI & VII years] by Professor Olivers

Florence had been going to and from Chicago and Arizona for a little while because her sister-in-law had fallen very ill. Her brother was away on a business trip in Italy and hadn’t been able to make it back for a couple of weeks. Florence had been happy to help, but it did mean that she missed a couple classes at Sonora. She was glad to be back at school, though. Allie was feeling a little better and her youngest son Andy had dropped by to stay for a few days to replace Florence. There were times Allie’s sickness reminded Florence of her deceased husband, and she prayed fervently for her sister-in-law’s quick recovery. She didn’t want her older brother to lose his spouse so early in life like she had.

Today Florence hadn’t prepared the classroom as well as her usual classes. She knew the classroom was still recovering from the intense scavenger hunt she had created for her intermediate students the year before. Today was simple. They were going to learn how to perform a simple Memory Charm. Memory Charms were more complicated than they seemed and very easy to mess up. She wasn’t sure how to go about teaching such a charm, but had finally decided to make today a theoretical lesson. Memory Charms were too dangerous to actually practice in the classroom, but the theoretical portion would most likely be on their R.A.T.S.

Florence sat at her desk grading the essays she hadn’t gotten to during her absence. As soon as the clock struck eight o'two, she waved her hand and the door in the back of the classroom closed with a bang. The stragglers wouldn’t be disturbing her class today. She hated tardiness. She stood up and smiled at them. “Good morning,” she said. Today she was wearing lavender, her favorite color, and her hair was styled nice and short as always. She walked to the front of her desk and grabbed her wand. “I haven’t seen you all in a little while and I apologize for my absence. I had a family emergency.”

With that, she turned around and waved her wand. The chalk rose and began writing down the page number on the board. “Page 120,” she read and turned to the class, waiting until the page flipping died down to begin her spiel. “Today we’re going to be learning about Memory Charms. These are highly dangerous and should not be used without serious contemplation.” She looked at everyone in the room to make sure they understood before beginning her lecture.

“The Memory Charm, as you can see in your textbook, has a history of being abused by different wizards and witches. Its creation is indeterminable, but it has been used for centuries for Muggles who wander into the wizarding world. Their memories had to be erased so our world could be protected. This charm is used primarily by the Obliviators licensed by the United States government in their respective states to protect the magical world.

“Whether or not you ever use the charm, the basic information is going to be on your R.A.T.S. For class today, I would like you to begin working on your research papers that is based on this charm. You can research its origin and practice, your opinions on the laws passed to regulate the Memory Charm, or speculate the motivation behind the charm’s creation; the list can go on. Figure out your essay topics and come to me to get them approved. Once you’ve decided, go on and begin your research now. There are books all over the classroom that will help you. If you need any more resources, let me know.” With that, Florence nodded and went back to her desk. This would give her a perfect amount of time to catch up. She would allow them to talk to each other during this class time even if she wanted it to be quieter so she could concentrate on their essays.

OOC: Two paragraphs, ten sentences, two hundred words, creative posts; you know the drill. You can safely assume Florence approved your essay topic if it was decent enough.

Some memories are worth saving. by Fae Sinclair, Crotalus

Now that Fae was in Advance classes, her schedule was much more freeing than it had been in years past. She had dropped the two classes that she had disliked the most, Defense and Potions. Potions she just didn’t have the brain power to keep up with and in Defense, she didn’t like running around trying to block off spells that would otherwise harm her. She hardly thought either of those things would be necessary for her in the future any way. She’ll just buy potions that she needed and since she’ll be a housewife and maybe one day mother, Fae didn’t think she’d have to worry about a crazy person suddenly attacking her.

She spent her mornings off usually working on her homeowner and projects that were assigned to her daily. Even though this was a year off from the serious exams, she felt like she were taking the RATS this year along with the Seventh years with all the work the Advance classes have been obtaining. She supposed she should have realized it from the start, but she had really been hoping for a break. Oh well, at least she had all this extra time to get things done and then some days where Arthur let Arnold free and they spent time together too. It was a nice change from her dull school work.

Sitting in her usual spot, Fae waited patiently for the lesson to begin, but jumped when the door suddenly shut loudly. It seemed as though Professor Olivers was in a terrible mood. This would not bode well for any of them. Whenever professors were in terrible moods, it usually lead to lots of overtime with homework or really extensive projects. Fae worked hard, she did, but she was not academically inclined and often found herself wishing for the year to pass so that she could relax over the summer.

Fae flipped through her book to the page stated and looked it over. Memory Charms. She knew that these were charms that Oblivators used on Muggles whenever they wandered a little too close to the Magical world and needed to erase any memory they may have, but Fae also knew that there were Magical being who did it to other Magical being. She supposed some of that might have been purely accidental, but she was aware of Dark Magic and how others use charms to their advantage or to harm others.

She sighed inwardly as the topic for the lesson was released. They would be working on a research project. Fae was going to have to take the entire class just figuring out what she wanted to write it on. She hated making decisions because she was afraid of making the wrong one. What should her topic be? The pros of the spell? Why it was placed in the first place? How it has helped with the Magical world? How it has hurt it? How the Dark Arts uses it? There were so many things that she could do for the research project…

Taking some time to review what she had in front of her, Fae settled on how Memory Charms protect the Magical world. Having received approval, Fae let out a sigh as she sat down and pulled out her parchment and quill. Today would be about research. “So much for a break.” Fae commented to herself.
