Professor Lorraine Taylor

It was the second session of Advanced Charms with Sciences in the second half of term, and Lorraine had picked one of her favourite subjects for discussion today. Last class, she had assigned her sixth and seventh years reading in their college textbook on magical sound production. The reading had been similar to what you find in a music theory or physics textbook, talking about vibrations, rate of vibration, and other such things. There weren't all that many spells that produced sound, but there were spells that muffled it or distorted it. And of course, since this was a course that also emphasised Muggle sciences, there were plenty of things to talk about. Instead of talking directly about musical instruments or physics, Lorraine instead wanted to focus the discussion on something else: acoustical engineering.

The desks were, as always, arranged in a circle. However, as a special treat for today, Lorraine had acquired doughnut holes from the kitchens and set them out in a Muggle-style Tupperware dish. The students came in largely as a group. It was a small class, after all. Not very many students were interested in the Muggle sciences, particularly in the upper years.

After greeting her students pleasantly, Lorraine decided to begin the class a bit early because everyone was present. A few of these students would be graduating in a few months, she realised with a start. Despite that she had only taught Charms for a few years here at Sonora, she had grown quite attached to a few of them. Some, like Zack Dill, showed an impressive interest in sciences. For someone who had spent a good deal of her life as a magical engineer, that was especially gratifying. She wasn't sure what field he wanted to go into, but Lorraine certainly hoped that he would consider something like magical engineering. There were far too few people interested in the field.

"Acoustical engineering," Lorraine began, looking at the person directly to her left. "What is it?"

Zack Dill

Zack arrived with most of his classmates, having come directly here from their previous class. He moved in toward his usual seat but detoured when he spotted the donut holes. He collected a jelly one and a chocolate one, popping the chocolate one into his mouth immediately and carrying the jelly one with him to his seat. Given his mouth was full, he had to settle for a nod and friendly sound in the back of his throat to return the professor's greeting.

Once he finished eating both donut holes, he licked off his fingers to get every last bit of sugar, and then opened his bag to take out his notebook and text. He'd barely gotten those open when Professor Taylor turned to him and asked him to explain what acoustical engineering was.

Glad he'd finished chewing and swallowing already, he immediately launched into his answer. "Acoustical engineering is a discipline of engineering that designs rooms and speakers to create the best sound quality possible. Like, if Sonora wanted to create a permanent music hall for Mr. Tellerman and his family to perform in, Headmaster Bulla might hire an acoustic engineer to make sure there were no dead zones where sound waves were weak and add panels to the walls in just the right places so that sound would either be absorbed or bounce back to the best effect."
