On the hunt by Stephen Baxter

Swinging the door to the Hospital wing open with a cautious push, Stephen stuck first his wand, and then his head into the room. Not seeing anyone straight off, he limped into the room looking a little the worse for wear and favouring his left leg whilst looking around in a suspicious fashion.

Stephen had good reason to be in there. His back was slightly discoloured with bruises, but that wasn't the reason he had come. His wand arm was paining him, but again that hadn't been the reason he had decided to visit this part of the school. His left ankle was swollen from a misjudged step an hour or two ago, but that wasn't what motivated his appearence there.

Spying a closed curtain, Stephen did his best to sneak over there wand held in readiness - although after a moments thought it was swapped to his other hand. There was a definte shape behind the curtain. Certain that he had found his man, Stephen rushed the final distance and pulled the curtain open, only wincing slightly as his arm protested. Without waiting, he pointed his wand and pointed it at the figure he had seen thought the curtain.

"Expelliarmus! Gotcha," he added with a jump and a fist pumping the air. Landing wasn't quite so good though. His ankle gave out and Stephen found himself on the floor biting his lip against the pain. And the pushing himself backwards across the floor with his hands.

If there was one thing that was probably not a good idea, it was being caught on the ground in open space.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Quite the introduction by Philemon Papp

Philemon heard the disarming spell and dodged instinctively. Surprised at his rather spry reaction, it was a few seconds before he registered that there was a muffled moaning body attempting to crawl its way out from his infirmiary.

He paused a moment, considering whether to let the poor child continue his fruitless endeavor until he asked for help, or whether to end it all now. The boy stiffled another moan, and Philemon pushed back a headache.

He crossed the open space, now stained by a spattering of blood and made a mental note to look up some sort of stain repellent charm for the floors. He knelt near the boy, watching as even now the child continued to try to back away. Obviously, Philemon wasn't being recognized.

"I'm the new mediwizard," he introduced himself, somewhat stiffly. "Firstly, you really should stop moving. It looks as if you've managed to bang up that elbow of yours and your ankle looks no better."

Philemon continued, cutting off whatever protest might have been voiced. "Let me fix you up, and then you can explain why you decided to try to disarm me."

The boy paled, albeit under a sudden flush of pain. Philemon held back a sigh and helped the boy onto a nearby bed. From the corner of his eye, he caught sight of the wreakage the boy's disarming spell had done. All his newly organized supplies!

Now they lay scattered and broken.

He checked the urge to glare. The boy better have a good reason.

Well, what were you expecting? by Stephen

OOC: Two small things - blood? Where'd that come from? And you may notice that Stephen was making quite some effort not to make noise. Biting his lip does not equal moaning. In other news, Welcome to Sonora! BIC:

The shape behind the curtain moved, and too late Stephen realised that he had been even less successful than he had first imagined. He increased his efforts to back up as the figure approached.

"I'm the new mediwizard. Firstly, you really should stop moving. It looks as if you've managed to bang up that elbow of yours and your ankle looks no better. Let me fix you up, and then you can explain why you decided to try to disarm me."

Stephen, still moving, lifted his head to gain a better look at this guy. He looked rather tall, not so tall as some of the professors, but not short either. And he didn't really have that gleam in his eye that Stephen imagined the maniac he was searching for would have. It occured to Stephen that he may have made a minor mistake.

His disappointment was palpable.

This man - obviously the new Mediwizard, not that Stephen had noticed a change in the position before this moment... or even the previous occupier of the role - definitely didn't seem to be the maniac Stephen had been hunting. He didn't even look to have a knife.

There didn't seem to be much point in continuing to back away, particularly as the man didn't appear to be particularly angry. Plus, Stephen reasoned, he probably did need a bit of patching up.

After the short struggle of getting into a bed, Stephen gave his sore arm a shake and frowned slightly before looking up at the man and shrugging apologetically.

"Sorry dude - I was looking for the knife-wielding maniac, and I thought you must be him, because I looked everywhere and he wasn't in the corridors and he wasn't in the library or in the commons... although maybe he's hiding in one of the other common rooms..." he paused looking thoughtful before shaking his head with a wince and delving on, "or even in the plant hall - that was weird. There's this huge," Stephen tried without much luck to show how big with his arms, "plant dude there and he talks and trips people up and everything. And then, when I got here and you were behind the curtain, I was sure that it had to be you. The knife-wielding manic that is."

He paused, breathing apparently being something necessary, then looked up at the medic. "Hey dude? You gonna fix me up?"

Stephen held up his injured arm and pointed at it encouragingly.

Hallucinations are worrisome by Philemon Papp

Philemon struggled to appear sympathetic, while inwardly making a note to see if the Hospital Wing had any anti-psychotics sitting about. The poor boy seemed to be raving: a knife-weilding maniac, carniverous plants...and not to mention the paranoia.

He stared down at the student, who was now waiting patiently and pointing to his arm, and decided that he could focus on the more mental aspects of the malady after he healed the physical damage.

Besides, it might just be the pain talking after all.

"Reparo tendonus," Philemon said with a jab of his wand and then repeated over the injured ankle.

He sat back on the neighboring bed and considered how to approach the questioning. The student seemed eager enough to explain, so perhaps a direct attack would be best.

"I have some free time, so maybe you can tell me more about this knife-weilding maniac of yours and the, er, giant talking tree." Philemon paused, feeling a bit awkward. "Maybe your name as well?"

dude.... there are more worrisome things... like pink girl! by Stephen

"Stephen," Stephen answered, knowing that that would be enough. Everyone knew about him, Stephen was certain of that fact. He bent his arm, then twisted it, testing it to see if it still hurt. It didn't. Grinning irrepressibly up at the mediwizard he gave his ankle a stretch too, nodding in pleasure at the lack of pain. "Good job, Doc," he said, moving off the bed so he could give it a proper test.

One jump, two jump, three jump... and his ankle went funny again, giving out and leaving him in a heap on the floor. Stephen's eyes went wide for a second, and he took in a sharp breath of air.

"Erm," he said in a strained tone as he struggled to pick himself back up and climb back onto the bed. "Zeph- Zepherflame. He told us about the knife-wielding maniac in class earlier. The maniac's around here somewhere, so I'm trying to find him so I can disarm him and..." Stephen hadn't actually though much beyond that point. "And, um, take him in for questioning," he finally said in as proud a tone as he could manage given his current situation.

"That's how I met Plant-Dude. He's like, um, one of them, um, you know those plants that eat flies? He's like one of them. Only bigger. And I don't know what he eats. He's got a girlfriend - he kept on telling me to leave her alone. I wasn't doing anything though. What's your name?" he finished, wincing again as before looking up at the man with great interest.

Newly fixed means easily re-broken by Papp

"Reparo tendonus" Philemon repeated, jabbing his wand a bit too enthusiastically. Stephen's strained tendons gave an alarming crack before settling.

He straightened and stuffed his wand back into the pocket of his khaki robes. "I'm the new mediwizard- Philemon Papp. I suggest you wait before testing out that ankle of yours again. Takes a bit of time strengthen after healing."

Philemon attempted a smile, fearing it more of a weary grimace than a friendly stretching of lips. "I don't know about this maniac of yours, but he hasn't been in the infirmiary." He paused and re-considered. "Well, if he has, I didn't notice."

There was something bothering him about Stephen's overgrown Fly Trap...other than the obvious fact that there was a talking carniverous flora skulking about about. He glanced up at the unremarkable ceiling and then back to Stephen's unassuming features.

Click!

The source of worry hit him like a carpet load of bricks.

"Your, er, Plant-dude...his girlfriend couldn't possibly be a student, could she?"

Papp? *sniggers* whatever you reckon, Doc. by Stephen

Stephen's eyes went wide for a moment until the tendon adjusted back to a more normal setting. Then he blinked as Doc introduced himself.

"Righy-oh, Doc," he said cheerfully, sure that his time here was done and that now - newly healed - he could continue his hunt. He was halted before he could even move. "Aaaaaawwwwwwww... how long? He might get away if I don't hurry up and get going again he'll get away for sure! Especially-" he cut off and nodded emphatically as Doc said that his elusive quarry hadn't been here, then stoped mid-nod at the adjustment to the statement.

His wand was back in his hand and he was scanning the room within seconds. "Maybe," he speculated, slowly pointing the wand, "he's hiding behind that door." He started to shuffle off the bed again before recalling the Doc's orders and stopping with a disatisfied sigh. Doc was saying something and he turned his head to listen.

A second after the question passed, and then Stephen burst out laughing. "A student?! You're kidding, right? Dude? A student?!! She's a plant, Doc. One of them green, leafy things that live in the Hall of Plants."

It was only logical... by Papp

Philemon had the unfortunate experience to feel decidedly embarrassed. He tried to avoid the emotion generally, not feeling that red cheeks helped his appearence much. And in such endeavors, he made it a point to then avoid 1)confident women, 2) forceful women, and 3) children with too many freckles.

He now had a new addition to his list, and there would be no avoiding them, not in his job- 4) students.

After attempting to remove the immediate flush that adorned his cheeks after Stephen's words, Philemon finally managed a reply of sorts.

"Well, how was I supposed to know that? You come in raving about murderers, jealous flora- I could only imagine that there had to be something normal in it all."

He crossed his arms and hoped to appear adult-like and stern. "Still, I'll let you go if you promise to save your hunting for daylight." He attempted a complacent frown. "Agreed?"

Dude, your logic is seriously twisted... by Stephen

OOC: Really, it must be asked... children with too many freckles?!! BIC:

Doc shone like a red beacon. Stephen, a grin spreading over his freckled face, watched and tried to work out how anyone could turn that red. Then, just when the Doc managed to return to a more normal colour, he burst out laughing.

"Where are you from, Doc?" he asked. "'Cause where I come from girls don't date plants. Although there aren't any talking plants there..." that was hardly surprising considering his muggle background.

"Whatever dude. And why-" even as the Doc said it, it became obvious to Stephen. The knife-wielding maniac was going to be wandering around at night, not during the daytime!! All scary guys did that, as Stephen well knew from sneaking into the loungeroom when his parents had gone to bed and watching an all-night horror movie fest during the last Halloween before he had come to Sonora.

"Are you kidding? That's when he's going to be out and about!! I gotta look for him then, or he might start murdering us all in our beds!" Considering the rather gruesome prospect he had been talking about, Stephen looked altogether too enthused by the idea.

Blame my mother by Papp

This was quandary. This was a problem. This was happening at an ungodly hour, and Philemon was longing for bed. Naturally though, such things could be not be shown in the face of a student. The faculty were supposed to be model examples of propriety and bravery in the face of all things frightening.

Like, in this case, a freckled student. Childhood memories threatened to return, and Philemon took a deliberate step in the direction of the doorway.

He paused before speaking, however. This quandary, this problem would need cunning. It would need manipulation. It would need...a Master Plan. And he was rather good at those sort of things.

"But you know, Stephen. If you've searched everywhere so far, and have yet to catch that murderer of yours, it might be because he's not doing the normal sorts of murderer things."

He held up a hand to prevent protest. "Hear me out. This sounds like you have an intelligent murderer on your hands. He probably figures that you'd expect him to lurk about in the shadows, at night, and so is waiting until daylight to strike again."

Philemon began to pace, warming up to his words as the Master Plan began to unveil. "It must be that, Stephen. Your murderer must know there's someone on his heels, and so he plans to keep you up all night, and then, when you finally collapse, exhausted- that's when he'll get you."

He slapped his hands suddenly and pivoted with a sharp turn, finger pointed skywards. "Trust me on this, Stephen! And then you'll catch your murdering fiend!"
