Advance Lesson Part 1 by Professor Kijewski

The thing that Kiva enjoyed most about having Advanced Lessons was that she could teach them pretty much any creature that she wanted, dangerous or otherwise. By this point in their education, the sixth and seventh years should be prepared to acknowledge the most dangerous of creatures. The first half of the year, Kiva had them all working on creature presentations. They each picked out a creature and then after researching, they presented their findings. It was rather boring in Kiva’s opinion, but she knew that there were some who learned better by lecture and written word than they did by visuals or practicals. She wasn’t sure how the students felt about the presentations, but they had all done a fantastic job.

This side of term, however, Kiva was bringing back the visuals. Unfortunately, due to the dangerousness of most of these animals, Kiva couldn’t physically bring these creatures to them. So, she did the next best thing and used the mirage chamber. It was amazing that the school had a room that could offer them so much. If this hadn’t been here, she wasn’t sure how else she could have given them the true experience of these beings without the fear of any actual danger.

She had advised in her syllabus that their lessons after midterm would be in the Mirage Chamber and to meet her in the Entrance Hall instead of the classroom. She stood waiting for her small class to join her before letting the painting swing open and the vortex become visible.

“Before we begin today, I wanted to let you know that we will be studying Dragons today. By now, I’m sure you are well aware that this is the Mirage Chamber and there is nothing in here that could actually hurt you.” Kiva advised them. “However, that doesn’t mean that you won’t feel the heat of their breath or the roughness of their scales. Alright, everyone come on through.”

Kiva stepped back to let everyone in.

The chamber was vast and large to handle the size of each dragon. All ten types were present. The chamber was mainly open plain where most of the dragons were roaming, but there were a few who wandered near a lake, some that laid in the shade of a small wooded area, and others that spread their wings and took flight in the sky.

“Today I want you to go around and identify each dragon. Each Dragon is numbered for you. Please take your assignment from me and go off and figure each out. You may work in pairs or as a group if you wish. Once everyone is done, you will be free to explore the dragons more closely if you’d like.” Kiva doubted any of them would want to even do that, but the option was there for them. “I’ll be around if you need me.”

OOC: Long and detailed posts please. Must be at least 200 words in order to get any points. Part 2 will be up on Monday

Glad these aren't real by Dana Smythe

Taking Care of Magical Creatures had initially been to fill up her schedule so that Dana didn't get bored during her final two years of school. It was one of those 'acceptable' classes that she'd been allowed to take, along with charms and divination. She'd had to argue her way into DADA, because it's not the sort of class she should be seen to be taking, according to her parents. Though the more Dana knew, both from defense classes and from society rumours, it would be as well for her to know these things as not, in the unlikely situation she ever came across one of the families more practised at actually using defensive magic. Of her own relatives, she only would suspect Cynthia of using hexes before polite negotiation, but she was becoming aware that the example set by her own family was not the only viable model.

Nevertheless, over the past couple of years Dana had found her magical creatures classes surprisingly interesting. Research had been easy because even the most grotesque creatures could be fascinating. That wasn't to say that she ever wanted to meet one face to face, so to speak (most of them did have a face of some sort or another), so when professor Kijewski revealed their class would be in the Mirage Chamber, Dana couldn't really summon up much excitement at the news. She didn't feel threatened in the chamber - she knew it was harmless, and nothing in there was real - but neither did she especially want to admire dragons close up. That's what their textbooks were for. It could definitely have been worse - Professor Dakin took some students to a dragon ranch for a field trip, or so dana had heard, and that would have been quite nerve-wracking. Dealing with the creatures where she could put her hand right through them if she chose was far closer to her comfort zone.

Dutifully, Dana took the assignment from Professor Kijewski and looked around the vast chamber at the magnificent beasts roaming it. She glanced down again at her list, and decided that this wouldn't be too hard a task - some would be easier than other to identify from a distance (the Welsh Green, for example, was given away by the color of its name) but some would require closer inspection from an amateur dragon-spotter like herself. Heaving a sigh, Dana set off to get herself closer to a large black dragon trying to pull off branches from the top of a tree - whether for food or other uses Dana wasn't sure - some of the breeds on her list were herbivores, but most weren't. "I didn't think I'd be spending my morning dragon hunting," she mumbled under her breath.
