New Student by Misty Sunriser

OOC: Practicing. This will not be my character if I apply.

Misty squinted into the setting western sun that lit up the Painted Desert of Arizona with colors of fire. She had been transferred from the Salem Institute in Boston because her dad had taken a job in Arizona.
If she was being honest, she was still resentful that her parents had uprooted her life to come to dusty, flat, dull Arizona, though she had to admit it was almost worth it for the sunsets.
Misty was told she would be Sorted into a house soon so she would have somewhere more permanent to sleep. As of now she was staying in a closed-off corner of the hospital. Not much for privacy, but at least she had a bed.
Still, she had to get to class, and she had no idea where to go. Gathering her backpack, she took a deep breath and plunged into the throng of students that bustled about in the halls. Misty buried her nose in the school map, trying to find the appropriate room. It wasn't until she ran into something warm that she realized she had just knocked over a person.
Stowing her map, she bent to check on the person that fell.
"Oh, I'm so sorry," she cried. "I didn't see you!"

New, too, but not as new as you by Ben Pierce

OOC: As a general rule, we discourage the use of real names or other identifying information on the internet and particularly on our site as a safety precaution, which is why your post has been altered. Everyone just goes by character names here. We are pretty sure none of the authors here are axe murderers or anything but you can never be totally sure . . . :) Anyway, it sounds like, from your post, that you are practicing with a mid-year transfer student, so I'm assuming we are a few months into term so Ben knows his way around. BIC:

Ben was late. Not so super late that the halls were empty already, but late enough that there was no chance he was making it to the Charms classroom before Professor Olivers closed the door, and the crowded hallways only frustrated his attempts to hurry. At least it wasn't DADA. Professor Pye kind of scared him a little bit.

Still, Olivers was strict in her own way and he'd rather not get in trouble for tardiness . . . again . . . so he took advantage of only being eleven in a school full of teenagers. His smaller size allowed him to duck and weave through the crowds and navigate the narrow bubbles of personal space people naturally left between themselves and others whenever possible. This allowed him to move a little quicker than the average flow down the halls.

Unfortunately, he misjudged one such opening, and the girl he cut off was reading a book or something (an Aladren, no doubt) and failed to compensate for the boy now in her way. Slightly off-balance from his sideways momentum, Ben took the worst of the collision and hit the ground hard with both his hands and knees. He was an agile kid, so he avoided a full out faceplant, which was good because that would have probably gotten him trampled. Instead, he clambered back up to his feet with his ego bruised more than anything else.

At her apology, he just shook his head, brushed the dirt off his palms, and straightened his Red Sox ball cap. "My fault," he assured her, not wanting her to feel bad for knocking him down. Falling into step beside her at the normal rate of movement down the hall, he accepted he was just going to be late again. "I was trying to hurry and got in your way." He didn't recognize her as one of his classmates, but - weirdly - she didn't have a House badge on her robes either. "I hope you're not going to Charms, too, are you? Because if you are, we're gonna be late."

Charms lesson by Misty Sunriser

"Oh, no!" Misty thought. "I can't be late on my first day!"
She glanced at the boy briefly and had to take a second look when she noticed his Red Sox cap. She smiled shyly, thinking that maybe Arizona wouldn't be so bad.
"Sorry again. I was looking at the map," she told the boy she had run into. "I'm going to Charms, too. We'd better go if we don't want to be late."
Briefly she wondered what Professor Olivers was like. Would he kick her out of the classroom for being late? Some of the professors at the Salem Institute were strict like that. She held out the hope that he was the understanding type.
Misty was usually much more prepared than this. She was the type to have all her ducks in a row, though today, of all days, seemed to be the exception.

Charming by Ben Pierce

A map? Ben gave her a slightly confused glance. It was far enough into term that he thought everyone had figured out their way around by now. And she was going to Charms. "Are you new?" he asked, having had enough clues that he felt it was safe to ask. The crowd was starting to thin as people found their classrooms and he picked up the pace a little, leading the way since his companion apparently didn't know how to get there.

"Professor Olivers likes punctuality," he admitted, which probably wasn't what the girl wanted to hear right now, "but she probably won't do much more than give us a frown-y face for coming in after she starts." Ben might not be that lucky, given that it wasn't his first offense, but the girl ought to be safe from detention or house point loss, especially if she was new. "You won't get in trouble or anything."

"I'm Ben, by the way," he added, "Or Hippo. Whichever. I answer to both." As an afterthought, since a lot of people seemed curious about his nickname, he continued, "My middle name is Hippocrates. That's where Hippo comes from."

OOC: Whoo, quick reply! Thanks for coming back and your interest in Sonora! I've been here a while, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them!

Re: Charming by Anonymous

OOC: I'm pretty good about a quick reply, though my husband and I are in the process of moving overseas...so apologies if I don't respond for a while. At that point we may have cancelled our internet, etc.

"Are you new?" asked the boy, giving her a slightly intrigued look. Misty felt like such a dummy for being odd one out. She had hoped no one would notice her awkwardness, but that hope had been shattered, it seemed.
"Yeah," she replied quickly, following his lead toward the Charms classroom. Luckily her legs were long enough to keep up with him because he had increased his pace to a brisk walk. He explained that Professor Olivers could be lenient towards her, which made Misty relax, if only slightly. He continued by introducing himself as both Ben and Hippo. Misty assumed he preferred Hippo because he explained how he got the name, or nickname as it were.
"This place is bigger than I thought it would be. Do you get many transfers?" Misty asked, hoping they were nearing the classroom by now. "And what's with the school mascots? Is that a beaver?"
The question came to mind because they passed under a large banner stretched across the hallway, the kind that cheerleaders usually put up before a game of some sort. It had the school crest on it. She wondered which House she would be sorted into.

A new post title by Ben Pierce

OOC: Good luck with the move! Have you tried going to the Chatzy yet? You can chat with some of the other authors there (if anyone is around) and brainstorm ideas for your application if you're still coming up with a new character to apply with.
BIC:

"Yeah, it's pretty big," Ben agreed. "Not too many transfers though, that I've seen, but I'm just a first year so I've only been here a couple months myself. My uncle came here though, so I could ask him if you'd like? Takes a while for the owls to get back and forth from Boston, though."

He glanced up at the House Crest banner as she referenced it. He wasn't quite sure which one she was mistaking for a beaver, so he ran through them all, clockwise. "The Hawk is for Aladren, Teppenpaws have a prairie dog, Crotalus has a rattlesnake, and Pecari is represented by the boar. They're all animals found in the desert around here, I think," he added by way of rationale for why those particular animals had been chosen, though he had no idea why each House had gotten the one it did.

Tapping his own House badge [OOC: I'd specify which one if I knew, but Ben's starting next term and hasn't been sorted yet] with a finger, he nodded to the empty spot on her school robe where hers was missing. "Are they sorting you tonight at dinner, then? Everyone else got sorted at the Welcoming Feast when we first got here." They'd had the orientation to meet each other prior to being sorted, so maybe that was why she hadn't been already, so she didn't get immediately lumped into the stereotype of where ever she ended up.

Re: A new post title by Anonymous

Misty nodded, trying to keep up with Hippo as he explained the school crest. She briefly wondered which House she would be Sorted into, though it wasn't at the forefront of her mind at the moment.
"Are they sorting you tonight at dinner, then? Everyone else got sorted at the Welcoming Feast when we first got here," said Hippo, leading her further onward towards Charms.
"I don't know, really. I wasn't told anything about it...but I wouldn't mind being Sorted because then I'd have a House and a bed," she joked awkwardly. Misty had never been good at these first impression situations. As a rule she tried not to say too much on the first meeting so she wouldn't come off as weird. Hippo didn't seem to mind, though. On the contrary, he seemed to be interested in talking to her more.
"I guess we'll find out at dinner."
