Don't think I'm coming back, it's just a relapse. by Alistair Johnson ft. Joella Curtis

Joella was back.

Alistair had never sent her the condolences letter he’d thought about so often since the news first reached him, but whether or not to do so was something that had plagued his mind a lot of late.

He knew who William Taylor was but had never taken the time to get to know Rolene’s Australian fiancé, largely because of the loyalty he felt towards his own brother Jeremy who had dated Joella’s older sister for a long time and had probably thought he would eventually be the one to walk the pretty singer down the aisle.

Even so, Alistair would never wish death, or any sort of misfortune, upon the man and he knew it had been a great blow to the Curtis family. Death was bad enough in itself but when it happened so unexpectedly to a healthy young man who had just weeks ago announced his wedding date, it was really very tragic.

Alistair highly doubted Joella could care less whether or not he sent some formal sympathies for her loss but it would have set his own mind at rest a bit more. He did not want to get involved with the fifth year again after the mess they’d made last time but that didn’t change the fact that she was an old family friend he’d probably never be able to stop caring about.

In some unusual impulsive act that Alistair thought belonged more to a Pecari and not someone such as himself, the fourth year got up from the table after finishing his dinner and strode over to where Joella sat. He hesitated briefly before touching her arm to get her attention.

She turned to face him and he didn’t say anything for a moment. “I’m sorry,” was all he could whisper.

Joella unexpectedly stood up and hugged him tightly, her face buried in his shoulder. Alistair returned the affection, holding her and knowing she was probably crying, and knew he had been right for approaching her. He shouldn’t have doubted his place in her heart for a second, irrelevant of what they had been through. She needed her friends in this dark time and it concerned him that he was originally going to let her mourn without him.

To any onlookers, which there were probably plenty seeing as they stood hugging in the middle of Cascade Hall at dinner time, they might assume this meant that Alistair Johnson and Joella Curtis were making up and that his apology had been for whatever reason they had broken up and not an “I’m sorry for your loss”. This was far from the case, however, as Alistair was never going to apologise for their break up - he was not the one who’d been in the wrong.

Rumours spread fast in a small school and Alistair didn’t doubt that some people would be thinking he and Joella were back together. But right now he couldn’t bring himself to care. Joella needed him and he realised he’d always be there for her whatever happened. He always had been there and he wasn’t going away anytime soon.
