Bumping Heads (Tag Derry) by Regina Parker

Reggie had received a letter back from the Grandmother explaining the best way of making chili and what the best ingredients were. She had supplied Reggie and Derry with plenty of spices to help with their end goal. Reggie was almost certain that if the Prairie Elves hadn’t had the spices on them, they would have gone out of their way to figure out how to get them. But she wasn’t going to deny herself of these already nicely supplied items. How silly would that have been? Her grandmother only provided them with a relatively basic started chili recipe with a note stating that they are the ones to decide which spices work best together and how spicy they should really want it.

This is why Reggie was sitting in the Cascade hall waiting for Derry to join her. They had to discuss exactly what they wanted from their Chili. Reggie had already tried to create different ones, but they never seemed to come out right. After having tried to make a couple of them on her own, Reggie had come to the conclusion that if she were to ever marry, she would feel completely sorry for her husband as she was clearly not a cook. She was really hoping Derry had a magic touch or possibly better taste buds than her.

Spotting him, Reggie waved him over and then quickly launched into what she was thinking. “Okay, so I made some small samples of chili using Gram’s basic recipe and then adding some spice, but they don’t taste very good at all. I feel like something important is missing.” Reggie had two small bowls in front of her and pushed them to him. “I suck at this. She makes this all look way too easy.” Reggie advised him looking grim. “She says that we have to decide if we want a meat chili or a bean chili. I’d prefer meat, but if you want beans, that’s fine too. I also like spice, but I have no idea what any of these spices are so I don’t know which one works best with what.” Reggie usual cheerful demeanor seemed to have a dark cloud over it while she talked out their predicament. “Can you figure out what we’re missing?" Reggie asked him looking somewhat hopeful. She didn’t expect him to know how to make Chili (Reggie wasn’t sure if he even knew what a kitchen was being from a family that lives in a mountain), but she was hoping he’d be able to work all this out with her. Time was running out and if they didn’t want to fail miserably, they needed to start somewhere and soon.

Won't that hurt? by Derry 4

Derry entered the Cascade Hall in order to make use of its primary function: he was hungry and looking for food. It was drastically urgent yet, fortunately, despite it being hours since the fourteen year old boy's last feeding, so he looked around for social company instead of bee-lining for the nearest food.

Spotting Reggie waving at him, he grinned and waved back, heading over to her table. Not only did she offer company, but she already had food waiting for him. This was definitely one of the times when Derry really loved his fellow Teppenpaws. Taking a seat, she pushed the bowls of chili in front of him, and Derry did not hesitate to take samples of each.

Despite her declaration that she 'sucked at this' neither bowl seemed particularly horrible. That could conceivably be his hunger talking, he supposed, but he was quick to assure her, "These are a good start anyway. The meat's not burned or anything, and the consistency's good. It's maybe not the most exciting taste, but I'd be a pretty poor partner if you got it all working without me," he grinned at her encouragingly.

"Meat works for me, too," he agreed with her preference, having none of his own. He liked both meat and beans, and he wasn't sure he knew enough about chili to be able to say which was better.

"I guess the best way to figure out the spices is to experiment. What do we have?" The names meant nothing to him, of course. Cooking was not something he had ever done much of, and while some pureblood ladies learned it as a hobby, very few wizards did and his mother was not one of the witches who found it enjoyable so he hadn't ever sat around watching her do it either.

His utter lack of experience did not deter him in the slightest, though. He grabbed one of the spice samples and sprinkled a generous amount on his next spoonful of the chili. Taking the bite with the new taste prominent, he felt his face turn red, tears form in his eyes, and sweat bead on his brow. "Let's not so much of that one," he gasped, and reached for the glass of pumpkin juice which magically appeared in his moment of need.
