First year Crotali, follow me. by DH Amelia Pierce

In some ways, the Head of House speech was old hat now. This was her fifth year at Sonora, and it was her fifth time providing one, so she was as comfortable in her role of Head of Crotalus House as she was in the role of Quidditch Coach. Her speech hadn't really even changed much since the first one she'd drafted and had one of the other heads check over. This year, she was changing maybe ten words total, and that included adding in the new prefect.

But in some ways, this year was different to the ones than came before, because now she was the Deputy Headmistress as well. She'd handed each of these kids the potion that turned them red, and the title 'Deputy Headmistress' inspired a great deal more authority than 'Quidditch Coach' had before. 'Quidditch Coach' had left her at the bottom end of the spectrum of Heads of House, since the other three were all full professors. Deputy Head changed that, and now she was second from the top.

She hoped that translated into a better effort among the first years to get along with their room- and year-mates, but she wasn't going to count on it. She already had a budding war among her third years, but that hadn't broken out into open battle yet (only one side seemed to have amassed an army so far), and she hoped it remained that way. Likewise, she really hoped Raines Bradley didn't do something she'd regret in retaliation for not getting prefect.

But those were all existing tensions. With a great deal luck, the first year class, despite its size, would all get along as well as the current second years seemed to. That was higher in the realm of probability than Gwen Carey coming back from the dead and that had happened. It was just that the house tended to collect two very distinct and not entirely compatible groups of people: 'proper pureblods' and 'everybody else' were the informal catch-all names she'd mentally given to the two sides. Unfortunately, the larger the class size, the more likely it was that she had some of both sharing a room for seven years.

"Crotali!" she called out again, in case she hadn't collected them all with her first few summons. "First year Crotalus students gather around me." One or two more trickled in and she thought that was all of them from her headcount during the sorting. "If any of you turned a color other than red, you're in the wrong place," she advised, but nobody left, so she figured she had the right group.

"I am Amelia Pierce," she announced, reasonably sure she had her full set of new first years, "of the Boston Pierces. I am your Head of House, Sonora's Deputy Headmistress, and the Quidditch Coach. Please follow me and I'll show you the way to our common room."
