Beginning a confession (Juri) by Adelita Garcia

Lita was pacing the corridor the led out into the entrance area where the hall was located. This was the way that the Aladrens came to and from when going to the hall or leaving it. So, if she stationed herself here, he was bound to make an appearance. And, a part of her was really anticipating seeing him (mainly to get this over with) but the other part of her just wanted to run away and just pretend she never made that deal with Charlie at the start of term. She could just lie and say that it didn’t work out. That Juri didn’t want anything beyond a friendship with her and be done with it. But Lita knew she wouldn’t be able to get away with lying to Charlie or really to herself.

So here she paced, watching people walk by, saying hello to some people or smiling at others, but really not paying any attention to them. Her mind was on what she was going to say or how she was going to approach the whole subject. For the last six years, Juri and her and only ever been friends. Actually, if she was being honest, she hadn’t really liked him at all their first couple of years here because he had teased her so much. But, somehow they had become friends and from friend, Lita had developed deeper feelings for him that she had pointedly ignored until they nearly consumed her. Or, until Juri sang that song about a girl he was in love with that had Lita realized how jealous and upset that idea of him being with other girls made her feel.

Her stomach felt queasy, but she knew that it was anxiety. She felt like this before every performance. Although the questions running through her head were not the same. Normally she would be asking herself ‘what if she fell?’ ‘what if they hated it?’ ‘what if she landed wrong and hurt herself?’ All very valid things for any dancer or performer to be scared of. But this time around her thoughts whirled around insecurities she hadn’t really been aware of having. ‘What if he didn’t find her pretty enough? Or smart enough?’ ‘What if he only thought of her as a sister?’ ‘What if he just laughed at her?’ ‘What if he didn’t even want to be friends anymore?’

Was this worth ruining a friendship over? Adelita had no idea. How did one even judge that? Charlie seemed so at ease with all of this. Including broaching the subject of a relationship with Daniel. And they both left the conversation feeling good about it despite it going no where. Ugh! Everything was so simple for them. Lita just knew this would go horribly wrong. This was a mistake!

Lita was about to give up on the whole idea and leave, but Juri’s blonde hair caught Lita’s attention. Instead of moving away from him, Adelita’s feet moved towards him. The butterflies in her stomach intensified, but she ignored them. Reaching out for him, Adelita gently grabbed his arm. “Hey, Juri, can we… talk?” She wasn’t looking at him when she asked, but her brown eyes slowly moved upward until saw his face. If he said no to simply talking than Lita could put an end to this all.
