Crotali, follow me by Amelia Pierce

As Aaron McKindy stood up and began collecting the first year Pecaris, Amelia Pierce waited until his bellow (well, his charm amplified voice) faded and he started to lead the Pecaris away before she rose from the table to do likewise with the Crotali.

Head of House. Wow. She had not seen that one coming. It really struck her as she raised her own voice to call forth the Crotalus first years. What was she doing? She was a female Quidditch Coach and disowned from her birth family. Sure, she'd been an Aether in Salem, but that had been a lifetime ago. Was she really the best person to put in charge of the House most sought by the pureblood elite?

She took a deep breath and pushed the doubts aside. "Crotalus first years," she called out on the exhale, projecting her voice as she would on the Pitch. Of course she was the best person for it. She grew up pureblood. She'd been sixteen before it even occurred to her to question that maybe a husband from another well placed magical family and a gaggle of purebred kids wasn't what her future might hold for her. Heck, she was a family matriarch. How much more high wizarding society could you get?

Every one of these kids who knew the first thing about the prominent New England families wouldn't just know her branch, they'd know her name. They wouldn't necessarily have heard anything good, but that wasn't what was important. Notority was nearly as good, and Amelia had a line into the pureblood grapevine. Even if she didn't want to make an official reprimand, she could get word back to any of their parents with only two degrees of separation.

And for those Crotali who weren't so - fortunate - as to have been born into a wealthy magical family, the past ten years had shown Amelia how the middle class of muggle America lived. Dichotomy. She had it. The House had it. Who better to put as Head of House?

"Crotalus!" she called again, confident of her right to be in this position. She snapped her wand in air, causing a red arrow to appear over her head, pointing down at herself. "Would all first years who turned red, please report here!"

Once she had assembled the same number that she had counted during the ceremony at the beginning of the Feast, she repeated, "Everyone here should be a Crotalus first year. That is, new students who turned red when they drank the potion. If anyone turned any color other than red, you should not be here."

Once she was sure she had the right group, she nodded and waved them along behind her as she started walking toward the Hall's exit. "Please follow me. I will show you the way to your new home for the next seven years."
