Belated Christmas presents [tag:Danae] by Eavan Valentine

Eavan kept one brown eye on the bag next to her as she grabbed a turkey sandwich from the large plate in the center of the table. It was her first day back, and although she didn't have any classes coming up, Eavan had taken to carrying around her bag wherever she went.

The wagon had dropped her off here only a few hours ago and she had yet to see anyone she knew, except for Earl who was waiting for her with a red bag, containing a pretty blue and yellow scarf, which she was currently wearing now, though it was a comfortable temperature in Cascade Hall.

The bag next to her, was filled with presents. She had already given Earl his: the family had chipped in to buy Earl an easel and a quaffle that been charmed for keeper practice. Neither of which fit into her bag anyways. Eavan just wanted to have the gifts handy if she ran into anyone today.

In fact, halfway through her sandwich, she looked up to see Danae coming through the doors, though with noticeably shorter hair. She grinned and waved her hand in the air to get Danae's attention before getting up to meet her half way.

"Danae! I'm so glad you're back. I like your hair. How was you Christmas?" Eavan led her back to the table where she rummaged through her bag for Danae's present. She found the little box with the big bow on it hiding the Beanie Baby turtle Eavan had found in a toy shop and handed it her friend happily.

"I got you this. I mean, it's not much, but I hope you like it."

And another belated present by Danae

After parting ways with Josh, Danae had made her way to the Hall. She was more excited than ever to find her closest friend. Entering through the door, her blue eyes glanced around before quickly spotting a hand waving at her. Grinning, she started towards Eavan, but only got halfway before they met.

Danae laughed in merriment, as Eavan talked a mile a minute. It was one of the things she adored about the girl. When they reached the table, she sat down next to her friend. “I'm glad we're both back. Christmas was...the usual...for the most part,” she told her, brushing a bit of the shorter hair from her face. She shrugged out of her coat, as Eavan rummaged in her bag.

When her friend turned back to her, she was presented with a box with a bow. “Aw, you didn't have to get me anything!” But she was secretly glad. It was nice getting presents from her friends. She still had the vanity set with her, but had carefully placed it on the table. She would have taken it straight back to her dormitory room, but she had wanted to show Eavan. Opening the box, she gave a little squeal of joy. “It's really adorable. Thank you. I'm going to name him Patrick.”

She placed Patrick next to the vanity set and reached into her coat pocket. She pulled out a box that was a little smaller than the one Eavan had given, which held a pair of butterfly barrettes, which were charmed to flutter their wings. She hoped that Eavan liked the color. “This is for you.”

The more presents, the merrier! by Eavan

Rolling her eyes, Eavan grinned, "Of course I had to get you a present. You're my friend!" Saying it aloud made the fact that she had an actual friend, more of a reality and even more so when Danae pulled out a box and handed over.

"I get a present too?" Eavan said as she took the tiny box from Danae. It was smaller than the one the turtle Danae had christened Patrick came in. But great things came in small packages, so Eavan gladly opened it and gasped when she saw what was inside.

Tipping the barrettes onto her hand, she held them up and watched them flutter gently.

"Wow, I love them!" Eavan said, hugging Danae. Letting go, she immediately pulled her hair out of its ponytail and clipped the barrettes into her hair. "They look okay?" Evan asked, not really used to wearing things like barrettes.

When she asked, Eavan finally noticed the larger package Danae had come in with. It looked like it had already been opened, so it must be a gift for Danae and not from her.

Staring at the box curiously for a second, she looked back up at her friend. "Who's the bigger box from?"

Yay for presents! by Danae

Danae laughed and said, “Of course, you're my friend too.” Though, Eavan was her only female friend, which she desperately needed. Who else was she going to gossip about boys with or share secrets with? Well, she probably could have shared some secrets with Josh, but it wasn't the same, especially when one was about him. And she was sure neither Josh nor Paul would like listening to her talking about boys. It was just too weird.

She grinned when Eavan put the barrettes in her hair. She reached over and moved a piece of hair that was sticking up. “There. Perfect.” She gazed at her friend thoughtfully. “You know, that hairstyle really compliments your face.” She wondered if Eavan liked anyone. If she did, the subtly new look might attract their attention.

When Eavan mentioned the other box, Danae face reddened slightly. “It's from Josh.” Taking it off the table, she opened it and gently pulled out the contents, which consisted of a gold antique style brush and mirror with delicate carvings and purple flowers. “Aren't they gorgeous?” She still couldn't get over the fact that he had gotten her something so nice. She still felt a little insecure over the book she had gotten him, even though he said he had liked it.

Thinking about Josh made her think about the dance, which made her a little nervous, but excited too. Neither of them liked dressing up, but she was betting that he was going to look gorgeous. She would be the envy of every girl there. It was thrilling to think about. Feeling a surge to share this with someone, she tentatively said, “You know how there's supposed to be a dance at the end of the year? He asked me.” She was blushing furiously.

Eavan rolled her eyes at Danae's compliment, but it stuck in her head all the same. She had been so used to her signature ponytail, maybe she should change it up a bit. Her aunts were always telling her dress more ladylike, and for most of her life she ignored them. Maybe they saw something she didn't.

She was brought out of her thoughts by the box Danae picked up. Danae blushed. It must be from someone special, or it was something special....or both. She was proved right very quickly.

"Josh Santoro?" she asked as though were other Joshes in the school. Then Danae took the brush and mirror set out of the box and Eavan made 'ooohh'-ing sounds. "They're beautiful!" Eavan said, completely flabbergasted that a thirteen year old boy would be able to pick out such a nice gift. Earl usually gave her drawings of his or - in the case of this Christmas - something relatively cheap, like the scarf. Eavan silently decided that if he ever got a girl a really nice present, he'd ask for her help in doing so.

Eavan stared at Danae. It looked like she was about to say something. And then she mentioned the dance. Nodding that she had heard about the dance, Eavan grinned when she heard that Josh had asked her.

"Well, that explains the gift." She laughed at Danae when the fierce blush appeared on her cheeks. "And apparently you like him too?" she asked, though it was really more of a statement than a question.

Danae nodded in answer to Eavan’s question on which Josh, though he was the only one that she was friends with. A grin settled to her face, as Eavan exclaimed over the set. “I know! I was shocked too, but it’s really perfect. I felt so stupid for just giving him a book,” she admitted, thought didn’t mention what the subject was. It was highly doubtful that anyone would link the book to possible pranks, but she thought it better not to chance it.

At Eavan’s mention of liking Josh, Danae shrugged slightly. “We’re friends.” While it was true enough, she also hadn’t denied the possibility of liking him. If she actually told anyone, it would be Eavan, but not where anyone could overhear.

Continuing on the topic of the dance, she said, “My mom was more excited over the dance than I was when we got the owl. She started planning my dress and is supposed to send it when it’s finished. I asked for red satin. What about you?" Then, curious, she asked, "Any idea who you might want to go with?"

"Well, I think a book could be a great gift as long as it was book on something Josh liked," Eavan reasoned. It was really cute how Danae was so concerned about having given Josh the right present. She remembered trying to figure out what to get Gil for their first Christmas as friends. It was hard to get a present someone you liked but didn't know incredibly well. Eavan sympathized and then tried to suppress a grin when she said they were only friends. It was obvious that that wasn't the case.

Eavan's grin, though a bit sadder, increased when Danae started going on about her mother's obsession with her dress. It was times like these that she really missed her mom. It just wasn't the same with Stevie pulling her through department store racks and forcing revealing dresses on her. But Eavan hid it as best she could and laughed right along with Danae.

"Red satin sound pretty," Eavan said thoughtfully, thinking it would really well with Danae's coloring, as far as she knew. "I know how you feel. Stevie was reading my letter over my shoulder and practically dragged me out of the house before I had finished reading it!" Eavan said, giggling.

"My dress isn't being made. We just bought a ready-made one. It's gold-ish with these really thin straps and this criss-cross thing across the top." Eavan tinged at the thought of the dress. Stevie had gushed over it, but Eavan thought it had been entirely too low cut. She wasn't used to wearing pretty things.

"And I was forced to get the really high heeled shoes and then forced to practice walking around the house in them." Eavan laughed, but cringed. The shoes hurt.

The laughter turned to thoughtfulness when Danae asked who she might be going with. Her first thought was still Gil, but as they had pretty much stopped talking to each other for unexplained reasons, she figured he probably wouldn't want to go to the dance with her. Her only other option, so far, was Devian, who had called her pretty. So that was a slim-to-none chance. Eavan shrugged.

"I have no clue. But I guess there's plenty of time to find someone. It's only January."
