Fourth-year boys dorm (Tag: Emery and Arnold) by Emrys Lucan

It was their first night back at school and for the first time Emrys had not been hungry. He was still listless-- still strangely upset over his grandfather's death and at the same time trying to balance his emotions. Throughout the Returning Feast, he had picked at his food and pushed it around on his plate until he decided he had been there long enough so as not to raise any suspicion on his rather fragile emotional state and he excused himself to return to the Aladren dorms under the pretense of needing to write his sister a letter. What he desperately needed was some quiet, alone time and a good book. What he needed was something to take his mind off his grandfather and off Charlotte. Upon his return to his bedroom, Emrys began to put away his things until he reached the precious books he had wrapped in his softest sweaters so as to avoid page tearing. Once he uncovered the ones that he wanted, he left the rest of his suitcase packed, sweaters still haphazardly trapped across the lid and falling out of his drawers. Emrys took a seat on his bed and opened his book to the page he had been on when he'd packed it away. Try as he might though, he could not focus on the words before him and angrily slammed it down on his night table.

"Stupid book," he said as he glared at it. The book had been a present from his grandfather upon his sorting into Aladren. Though the man had not wanted Emrys to attend an American school he had still be pleased that his grandson had been placed into a practical house. A glimmer of gold peeked out at Emrys from the floor and he bent over to retrieve it. The gold came from a worn gold and maroon bookmark that had once been his grandfather's when he was younger and had also been gifted to him during Emrys' first year. Emrys picked at the edge of it before smoothing down the fraying threads against his pant leg and swung himself back onto the bed. "You're determined to not be forgotten, aren't you, Grandfather?" He said to the bookmark and smiled in a macabre sort of way. "Well, no worries, you've certainly made a lasting impression on my mind and I'm certain I won't be forgetting you any time soon."

It was lying down on his bed like this, staring unseeingly up at the ceiling while absentmindedly playing with the worn edge of the bookmark that Emrys' thoughts were interrupted by the door to the dorm opening. He looked up to see one of his roommates. "Oh," he said, turning his head back to the ceiling. "Hi." After a few moments had passed, Emrys got up and dusted off the cover of the book that he had mistreated. "Sorry about the mess, I'll clean it up." He started folding his clothes again and put his books up on the shelf where they belonged. "So this ball." He said, pursing his lips. "You guys going?" He sighed. "I'm asking Charlotte." No surprise there. "What about you?" His rather short phrases were not characteristic of his normal cheerful attitude but in his current mood they felt appropriate. Besides, he needed a distraction from his thoughts other than cleaning up the mess he had made and asking about their breaks would only encourage questions about his-- questions he didn't particularly feel like answering just then.

Emery did not have any strong feelings about being back at Sonora. He didn’t have negative feelings about it either. It just was what it was. He wasn’t in a serious exam year, so classes weren’t has hectic for him as they were for some of his peers and he wasn’t involved in anything remotely serious for him to really worry about. So, all things considered, his year was a rather pleasant year for him. The only stressor in his life was the Ball and even that was minimal. His only concern was whether or not he should ask Ava to go to the ball with him.

He wanted to ask her. He acknowledged this point to Chloe sometime before break. But he was aware that Ava just saw them as friends. He could ask her to go with him as friends, but they sort of already made that packed back at the start of the year and he didn’t want to look like an idiot asking that again. But asking her to go as like a date date could lead to potential rejection and then he wasn’t sure if he would really be able to face her again. This would make things very difficult for him considering she was friends with Emrys and Chloe. And, out of everyone at the school, these two were his best friends. It was a conflict of his inner thoughts and he still wasn’t sure what to do about it.

Having eaten the delicious foods of the feast and listening to the mutterings of his housemates, Emery returned with the rest of the house to the Aladren common rooms and then to his dorm room. It was there that he saw Emrys. At the feast, Emrys had seemed distant and maybe even a little down. When he had excused himself to write his sister a letter, Emery thought maybe he wasn’t feeling well and wanted an early night. The short greeting made Emery feel as though he had interrupted something personal even though Emrys was only lying down. “That’s okay.” Emery replied, not at all bothered with the mess. Having a little sister and Chloe as a sister, he just got used to that sort of thing. Besides, some clothes and items spread around really wasn’t that bad.

Emrys’s sudden and short questions regarding the ball caught Emery off guard and he simply started at his roommate for a moment trying to gage what was going on. After taking that second, Emery slowly responded to the questions. “I’ll be going. My mom bought me a dress robe.” He commented, running his hand through his brown curls (he had been growing his hair since the start of term to reveal matching curls to his mother). “I want to ask Ava, but I probably won’t. I don’t want to make it weird or anything.” Deciding that answered everything, Emery looked over at his roommate, “Are you alright?” It felt like a fair question to ask, after all. Emrys had been quiet at dinner and wasn’t behaving like himself now.

Taking forever... by Emrys Lucan

Despite Emery's assurance that the mess was fine, Emrys continued to pick up. He'd never understood the concept of stress cleaning before but was now finding that it was quite conductive in redirecting his frustrations. The more he put away, the looser his shoulders became and the more that tense feeling throughout his body dissipated. He felt as though he were suddenly gaining an insight into his father's brain and felt bad for disliking Julian's nervous habits and cleaning tics.

Upon Emery's admission to wishing to ask Ava to the ball, Emrys could not hide his surprise. That Ava was not just his neurotic friend but rather a girl capable of liking and being liked was a fairly new concept to Emrys. "Well," he said. "I'm sure whatever you choose to do will be fun." Ava was interesting company so spending an evening with her probably wouldn't be not fun. She named her paintbrushes for Merlin's sake! "Besides, Dimitri isn't really around anymore so it's not as if there's much competition." Though his sentences were now longer, they were still monotone, so Emery's next question, though unwelcome, did not come as a surprise.

Emrys nodded in response. "Sure, I'm fine." He really didn't want to go into details with Emery because Emery seemed to really get along with his family and Emrys didn't know how well he'd be able to understand the situation. "My grandfather died," he said, giving a long pause as he traced the raised letters on the cover of his book. "It was awhile coming because he was getting old and then he got sick. But anyway, his funeral was right before I came out here so I'm still a little shaken up but I'm doing better." He smiled a little to try and prove that point further and then asked Emery a question in order to end that conversation. "But how was your break? Did you have a good time?"

Emrys was always wary about asking directly about Angel and ever since his grandfather had gotten sick was extra so because he himself was loathe to talk about the failing health of his family member.

OOC: Sorry for taking so long, I was waiting for Arnold to respond.
