Seeking Mr Spindler by Professor Sadi Powell

Now that it had been established which sixth year students would be continuing with ancient runes to RATS level, Sadi had been in her office reviewing her lesson plans for the year. With such small numbers she would probably run half the classes joint with the seventh years. Besides, Sadi had more work to complete this year than ever before; it seemed every time she started a new year with Sonora she'd adopted more tasks. Yet it was only the very start of term, so Sadi had an opportunity to get ahead in her work and she intended to stay so.

On that note, there was one matter she had yet to attend to that could be accomplished almost instantly, circumstances permitting. Rising from behind her office desk, Sadi headed immediately into the adjoining commons to discover whether she could locate either of the individuals required. There were, as usual, various Crotalus students gathered in the common room. It wasn't long before Sadi identified one of her sought students: Geoffrey Spindler.

“Mr Spindler,” Sadi called to him clearly from the doorway, “could I please have a moment of your time?”

Answering the Summons by Geoffrey Spindler

Geoffrey checked his watch as he entered the common room. He frowned a little, doing some quick calculations in his head, and then made his way to the noticeboard. The sign up sheet was filling up quite gratifyingly. In fact, he looked at the names and positions people had asked for, he easily had enough for a full team. He was wondering briefly whether or not to close the signups now and move onto tryouts (not that those would be particularly necessary) when he realised that his name had been called.

Turning he saw his Head of House, Professor Powell, standing in the doorway to her office.

Feeling a little curious, but assuming that it was either going to be about why he hadn't signed up for Ancient Runes (which he had actually meant to do. Or had he? Stephen hadn't been helpful when talking about the Advanced classes. Yeah, he was pretty sure he had meant to. It was a wierd day when he was filling in his subject choices. Probably best to talk to the Professor about this now in any case) or because of Quidditch, he straightened his badge and crossed the room.

"Of course you may, Professor. How can I be of assistance?"\r\n\r\n

Divulging the information by Professor Powell

The sixth year immediately answered her call and Sadi gestured that he should follow her into the office. She pushed the door ajar after them, so they might observe some privacy, but Sadi felt it unnecessary to shut the door and take seats. Instead she remained standing just inside the doorway and explained without hesitation. "I'd just like to inform you that Helena Layne will be your assistant captain in Quidditch." Sadi approved of having more than one leader; negotiation and delegation were important for any position in authority, perhaps moreso in sports. Besides, an assistant position could give the captain more time for study in the lead up to important examinations, and the team could get to know their future captain a little better. All in all it felt like a good way to run things.

"I'd appreciate it if you could pass this on to Helena," Sadi added. Not only would it save her the time of finding another student, but she felt it would mean more coming from the team captain, anyway. "That's all," she said, preparing to dismiss Mr Spindler. "Unless there's anything else you wanted to discuss?" She didn't expect there was, but it always felt prudent to ask, as a just-in-case.

And quite splendidly too. by Geoffrey

"La- Helena?" Geoffrey repeated, and felt pleased for catching and correcting his referral to his fellow Chaser. He thought about her for a moment before nodding. "I'll let her know as soon as I see her."

"That's all. Unless there's anything else you wanted to discuss?"

And that, Geoffrey realised, was his cue.

"I've been thinking," he said. "And I was wondering if it's too late to sign up for your class this year?" He paused a moment, reviewing his CAT scores. He'd actually managed to get quite a few. Charms he had managed fairly easily, it having been one branch of magic that he had been working with forever. Most of the rest - in fact, apart from Care of Magical Creatures which he'd bombed - had been Acceptables, although some of them had only got the mark by the skin of his teeth, if he was any judge. "If you're taking students who got Acceptables," he ammended.

It wouldn't be the end of the world if she didn't take him on. But it didn't hurt to ask.

Thank you by Sadi Powell

It turned out that her student did have another question. Sadi was pleased that he would like to study the Runes at higher level, despite Mr Spindler only achieving an Acceptable grade. Although Sadi didn't usually take students with CATs grades below E, because she had made an exception in the past, she only felt it fair she make an exception now, especially seeing as it was requested so politely.

"You're welcome to take the class," she said after a moment of consideration. "Though if you begin to fall behind, I want you to tell me immediately. There is a lot of work involved at higher level and I want all my students to be comfortable. So as long as you're happy to make your own decisions concerning your own capabilities then I look forward to seeing you at the first lesson."

In all honesty, Sadi was concerned that with an A pass in previous examinations and a Quidditch team to run, Geoffrey might find the work rather too much to handle. Of course, she couldn't recall what other subjects he would be taking for his sixth and seventh years; she only hoped he would do as she suggested and make realistic decisions about his own progress. "Does that sound fair?"
