A School Owl

Anabel and Cecily by A School Owl

Once his first letter was dropped off, the school owl took off on the second leg of his journey, this time to Crotalus. The recipients of his remaining two letters were both meant for first years, so he veered first for their room. If they weren't there, then he'd try the common area, but he was almost certain they were in their room.

With any luck both girls would give him a treat before sending him back to the original sender with a reply. Then he could get another treat. He loved his job sometimes.

The two letters were virtually identical to each other and the one that was recently dropped off in Aladren's dormitory. The only difference between them were the names on the envelope and at the beginning of the note:

[Anabel or Cecily],

I was thinking that we might all meet a few hours before the ball. We could do each other's hair and make-up and help each other with any other preparations we might need.

Kisses,
Holly Thistle

Cecily Smythe

Ooh, how exciting by Cecily Smythe

Cecily was sitting on the edge of her freshly made bed, perfectly content in brushing her hair ’til it shone. She jumped a little when a post owl flew in through the dormitory window, but calmed as soon as she saw that it was a school owl – some of these private owls could be rather impolite at times, which had nurtured Cecily’s wariness (bordering on dislike) of them.

This owl, however, was utterly delightful. It approached Cecily with a clearly named envelope. Pleased to have received post from one of her school friends (she presumed as much, for a Professor would surely have added her surname), Cecily wasted no time in relieving the bird of its burden. The owl hopped about in an expectant kind of way while Cecily opened the letter.

Kisses, Holly Thistle.

Cecily squeaked with uncontrollable excitement. That sounded such a fabulous idea! Plus she knew that Holly would only invite nice girls, so it could only be fun. Taking up a piece of lace-edged fine pink parchment from her bedside table, Cecily carefully quilled a reply.

Holly

That would be fabulous. How about we meet in the girls’ bathroom on the first floor? I could send home for some cupcakes to eat while we get ready. I very much look forward to it.

Kisses,
Cecily Smythe

Once she was done, Cecily penned Holly’s name on the outside of the folded note (she had no envelope to hand) and offered the owl a treat before the bird took off again. Within another minute, Cecily had indeed written to her mother, asking for some treats for the girls to share at their getting-ready-for-the-ball party.
