Back to school...back to school... by Anabel McIntosh

If there was one thing for certain, the Christmas holidays had certainly not been long enough. Anabel, who had always tried to keep a positive outlook on things, had begun to find Sonora quite a drag near the end of her first semester and had gladly, and quickly, packed her trunk and made her way home-- to the welcoming arms of her adoring parents.

Although she had made friends while at school, nothing compared to the time she had with her parents. It had always been the three of them. Always. They also adored her totally and unconditionally, a nice contrast to the disdain she received from several of the other students. In fact, she couldn't quite understand what she had done to receive such treatment. It was almost as if they couldn't stand to be around her because of the way she portrayed herself.

And what was so wrong with her, she wanted to know. She had been raised with perfect manners. She had perfectly tailored clothes, shiny hair, manicured nails. She had everything. She knew how to act around others and she knew the difference between right and wrong. She also was well-known and well-liked by the public. She had always been in the spotlight and the media always had the nicest things to say about her. There was nothing wrong with her. Absolutely nothing.

Quite unlike her loser roommates who had terrible manners. They barely knew about fashion and had the oddest ideas about how they should conduct themselves. It was as if they cared little about polite society. Not that she was determined to look down on them. She just didn't...well, they were just strange.

Sighing, Anabel entered her dorm and moved straight to her bed. Once again, she was hit with a loss as she saw the space she had chosen. It was nothing compared to her room at home. But- she always reminded herself- this was school and she could deal with it. She was a McIntosh.

Taking a seat upon her bed, she had just enough time to get comfortable before someone else entered the room. Smoothing out her clothes, she looked up and smiled. "Hey," she said brightly. "Did you have a good Christmas?"

Cecily Smythe

Oh the joyous, joyous fun by Cecily Smythe

Returning to school had been one of Cecily’s most trying episodes. Certainly she had been looking forward to joining Sonora; what could be better than learning all about magic? However, in reality it wasn’t quite as glamorous as had been anticipated. The classes could sometimes be dull, and some classes, like potions, were always a certifiable chore. Flying classes were unfortunately compulsory for first years, and Cecily was unfortunate enough to share a room with girls who had an active interest in broomsticks. Luckily, Cecily had been successful in talking through her differences with most of those girls in the first half of the year. Renaye was still a horribly stuck-up, obnoxious and obstinate girl, but Cecily wasn’t having any trouble ignoring her.

By attending Sonora Cecily was also forced to be parted from all of her beloved animals, except the one creature permitted by the Headmaster. For the first stint of her first year, Cecily had taken her black rat Ulysses. This time she’d brought Ulysses’ brother; Hercules. Cecily was just taking him, in his cage covered by red velvet, up to her dormitory.

No sooner had Cecily opened the door, someone said, “Hey. Did you have a good Christmas?” Cecily looked up to see Anabel, the only girl in her dorm who Cecily had liked instantly. Cecily returned a smile – Anabel was smart and nice, and Cecily was always glad she’d chosen the bed next to this girl’s.

“It was okay,” Cecily replied, heading over and setting Hercules’ cage down next to her bed. “It was lovely having my own room again. I can’t believe how many people there are here,” she said, waving a small hand around to indicate the other beds in the dorm. Careful not to crease her robes, Cecily sat down on her own bed, facing Anabel. “How was yours?”
