First Year Boy's Dorm. by Josh Warren

Josh pulled his trunk into the emoty dorm, breathing a sigh of relief as he set the luggage down. It was red. The dorms had a large amount of red draped on the beds and paint on the walls. He didn't mind. It was just an observation. Josh looked around, deciding that he would kind of like a bed by the door. He didn't think he felt like being surrounded. He set his trunk at the foot of the bed and began to unpack. He pulled out a poster of the Montrose Magpies and taped it onto his wall. He wasn't sure who his roommates were and he hoped that he got along well with them. It would suck to be in a room with people you didn't like. He hoped Renaye was doing alright with that...

Josh pulled out a moving picture of himself and Raye, each thwacking a bludger while playing Quidditch. He and Raye had had this weird telepathy moment. They were going to talk to the Coach who decided first-years weren't a good idea for the teams... They would not go down without a fight. They just wanted to be a reserve. Just a reserve! That way they could still practice, but they were there if needed. Josh looked around as the door opened. He nodded at the boy who walked him and offered a,

"Hi."

He wasn't big on talking. But then he reminded himself that was not going to be the guy-friend this year too. He was going to have guys as friends, not a slew of girls. Not that there was anything wrong with them. They were great friends and they liked to talk to him rather than have him talk. So, insted of keeping to himself, he spoke up once more.

"I guess we're roommates, huh?"

Now that we're all here... by Zane Cooper

Zane had moved in most of his stuff about an hour before, thanking Merlin that the prairie elves had moved the heavy stuff into the room; it was very convenient, really. After that, he’d gone downstairs to take a look at the common room. It was nice enough, but it was just so crowded and, well, indoor-sy. The former probably wouldn’t change, and as for the latter, he shouldn’t have expected anything less from any room. It was just, the Aladrenian (yes, he was from Aladren, Oregon, and therefore found it perfectly acceptable to label himself in such a manner) was more of an outdoors kid. To be even more specific, he was an up-in-the-air-on-a-broom, type of kid. And if it wasn’t night, and if he had a clue as to where he was going in Sonora, and if the Quidditch coach hadn’t all but banned the first years from even stepping foot on the Pitch, that’s where he would have been. Up in the air on a broom, leaving all the crowdedness behind.

When he had tired of the common room, he went back upstairs. He only had one roommate, whereas the girls in his year had to share a room with six roommates. Zane didn’t think he could bear putting up with six other people all the time, and hoped that his one roommate was agreeable. If not, well, Zane would just have to figure out how to get onto the Quidditch Pitch.

His hopes were immediately lifted when he saw his roommate had a Monstrose Magpies poster on the wall. Not that he supported them or anything – he was a Skyscraper fan all the way – but this was at least a sign that his roommate liked Quidditch. There was almost no doubt in his mind that they would get along marvelously.

“Yeah, guess so. Magpie fan, eh?” he remarked to the boy who had greeted him, “I’m a New York Skyscraper fan myself – it’s a family thing. Zane Cooper, by the way,” he said, giving the other boy a nod. Zane wasn’t much for handshakes, they were much too formal.

If the kid was a true Quidditch fan (in Zane's eyes, at least), then there would be no need to explain why being a Skyscraper fan was a family thing for a Cooper. Seven years ago, his aunt and two uncles (Tabitha Cooper, Ted Cooper, and Greg Forrester, to be specific) had been part of the short-lived Skyscraper dynasty seven years back. And that Uncle Greg had been captain the year they’d won Nationals. He also would know about the deaths of his uncles at that Muggle rights rally gone wrong… but Zane had grown used to random people knowing about that.

Two-person party! by Josh Warren

Josh felt his respect for the boy who walked in soar as one of the first things said to him was, Magpie fan, eh?”

Josh nodded. "Yeah, my sister and I both support them," he said, more happy than he could say about having a Quidditch-savvy roommate. He only got one shot a good roommate and... well check it out! He wasn't sure how it could be better. He knows. about. Quidditch!

“I’m a New York Skyscraper fan myself – it’s a family thing. Zane Cooper, by the way,”

Josh nodded back at Zane, but did a double-take. "Cooper? The Skyscraper Coopers?" He didn't know what he did, but the universe was happy with him... Zane had found that one thing he will never stop talking about. He was normally a quiet guy, but Zane will never know the quiet Josh. He's a Cooper! Of course, that meant his family had died. No one had ever died in Josh's family besides his Aunt Jen, and he was only four when that happened. Irene obviously remembered it, but he barely remembered the funeral. He wasn't sure how to deal with stuff like that...

"Seriously," he said, his bright blue eyes wide open. "Is it just a coincidence that you support the Skyscrapers and your last name is Cooper?"

Josh had never been against New York. If anything he was more for them. He would never forget the trip to New York. It had been the Magpies versus the Skyscrapers, so he wasn't exactly rooting for them, but it was one heck of a game... If they were playing another random team he would root for them because of their impressive history. Now he was suddenly finding himself liking the team more and more.

"My twin sister, Renaye, and I," he said, "We were beaters for our neighborhood team. We went to this really awesome travel game to New York and saw a Skyscrapers' match. I have to say, it was impressive. I would go get her, but I'd rather not drop into the common room..."

Raye would love Zane. She knew almost as much as Josh did about Quidditch. Almost. But everyone knew about the National's Championship that New York won and the tragic events that followed. Renaye would probably learn his name and then give him a hug. It was so weird not having here right there to talk to. This was their first year sort of apart...

"But what about this first-year's can't play rule? It's killing me..."

OOC: What positions did the uncles and aunt play? Josh knows, of course xP, but I don't...

What will we celebrate? by Zane

OOC: Ack, sorry about that! They were all chasers. :)

BIC:

Zane couldn’t help but grin when the other boy recognized his name. Some families were recognized for the purity of their blood, or the immensity of their wealth. The Coopers were known for the twins and the son-in-law that had made it to a professional Quidditch team. The three had all had starting positions on the team together for seven years, although all of them had played professionally for years before. And they had made a couple of strong runs for Nationals, and even won one championship during their time.

Zane didn’t really remember his uncles; after all, they had died when he was four. He guessed that was a good thing, because it didn’t hurt so much that they had died. All he remembered of his Uncle Greg was a redheaded man buying him ice cream once. And he remembered Uncle Ted’s laugh. It was so boisterous – how could anyone forget it? To him, his uncles were legends, and whenever the rare opportunity came that his dad felt comfortable talking about Uncle Greg and Uncle Ted, and of his Aunt Tabby who retired from Quidditch, Zane made sure to drop everything and listen. Some people heard fairytales before bedtime. All Zane ever wanted to hear about were his quiet aunt and dead uncles.

“Yup,” Zane nodded, proud of his relatives, “Aunt Tabby and Uncle Ted were my dad’s younger siblings. And Aunt Tabby was married to Uncle Greg. My cousin, Hannah, should be coming here next year, she’s their daughter.”

Zane felt a pang of jealousy when Josh said he had been to a Quidditch game in New York. He hadn’t been to any since he was four. In part, it was because his family was tight on funds, but cousin Ronen was sure that, should the Coopers really want to return, they could go for free. The owner of the team, Felix Dempsey, had been a good friend of Greg’s.

And therein lied the problem.

Zane never did any research on his family, he preferred the stories his dad told him. It made everything all the more majestic. But Ronen, never one to leave a mystery unsolved, and with the resource of his father, Uncle Terri, a wizard journalist in New Jersey who was more than ready to answer any questions Ronen had, had learned far more than Zane did. From what Ronen told him, Mr. Dempsey was a wealthy muggleborn, and a strong activist for Muggle and Muggleborn rights. It was he who had encouraged Uncle Ted and Uncle Greg to join in Muggle rights activism, had pulled them in too deep, though few people actually knew that.

From what Uncle Terri and Ronen said, Zane’s dad blamed Dempsey for their deaths, he thought Dempsey manipulated them into joining his group, that they were too young and didn’t realize what they were doing. They didn’t realize Dempsey was using them and their fame to gain supporters. Zane had never asked his dad about it, he was too afraid. He also didn’t want to believe that his uncles could be so easily manipulated. Zane had nothing against muggleborns, his dad was a halfblood, and his mom had two pureblood grandfathers, a muggleborn grandmother, and a halfblood grandmother. Zane considered himself to be a ¾ pureblood. But he didn’t like the idea of his uncles not being infallible, either.

“Beaters?” he asked, “I play seeker, sometimes chaser in the pickup games back home. Doesn’t matter which, really, as long as I’m up in the air,” his smile fell into a frown at the mention of the first year ban, “I know, man – it’s not cool. I’ve never gone this long without at least flying before, I don’t know what I’ll do.”

*blinks* We need a reason? by Josh Warren

Josh was still in a Quidditch-induced shock. The Coopers' nephew was his roommate! The best chasers New York ever had, and their bloodline was standing in front of him... He shook his head slightly, his black hair falling into his blue eyes a little.

“Aunt Tabby and Uncle Ted were my dad’s younger siblings. And Aunt Tabby was married to Uncle Greg. My cousin, Hannah, should be coming here next year, she’s their daughter."

"This is so crazy..." Josh murmured, sort of to himself, sort of to Zane. "So you grew up with Quidditch too? My parent's started a Quidditch broom and supplies store. They develop different brooms, work on the aerodynamics of beaters' bats... All that good stuff. In fact," he reached for his own broom. "This is one of the first Flares ever made."

Josh loved this broom like no other. He remembered hearing about the suspension of it, the charms that were added for turning, all of the engirneering details, and being in awe. He hadm't even seen the broom yet. The handle was made of a dark rosewood, the words The Flare were inscribed in silver. The tail of the broom was just as good as the day he got it. His parents had sent it over from Bolivia as a birthday present. Renaye got an Avalanche, which he had to admit, was a great competitor for his Flare. Irene preferred the Blurr 3000. Raye didn't like it, and Josh thought it was okay, but the broom seemed to work for her. It just liked her, or something... Josh barely allowed anyone to look at his broom. Josh held out the broom, giving Zane a 'drop-it-and-you-die' look.

“I play seeker, sometimes chaser in the pickup games back home. Doesn’t matter which, really, as long as I’m up in the air,”

"I know what you mean. I'd play any position, as long as I got to play. I'd referee a game if I had to! But my sister and I are Beaters, and she says we're pretty hardcore at it and I guess I believe her. Raye says we should go and demand to be reserves. My cousin, Irene, she was a reserve for Pecari last year. She actually got to play in the championship game, but they lost to Crotalus," Josh gave a small smirk. "I'm not sure how she feels with us in Crotalus now..."

“I know, man – it’s not cool. I’ve never gone this long without at least flying before, I don’t know what I’ll do.”

Josh nodded. Completely understood. "I know. We can't be anywhere near the field until we pass flying lessons. My sister was about to go set a bludger in Fox's room when she found out..."

In case anyone asks by Zane

Zane nodded at Josh’s question, and then it was his turn to be in awe. His parents had their own Quidditch store? Awesome! Much better than any old bookstore, like the one his parents owned. It was a good business, it paid the bills, but in a small town like Aladren, it didn’t allow you the luxuries, like really nice brooms.

“A real Flare? Are you kidding? That’s so cool!” he exclaimed, brown eyes filled with disbelief. He’d heard about them, but mostly just rumors. And he heard this information mostly from the kids back home, meaning it was probably far from reliable. He had never had he seen a real one, live and in person. Zane didn’t think many people had. And here the broom was, right in the same dormitory as him. Hannah was going to be so jealous when she found out.

And he was going to let Zane hold it! Holding it carefully in his palms he examined the broom. The tail was perfect; everything about it was just amazing. What he wouldn’t give to hop on it right now and take it for a test ride… no, he couldn’t do that, though fighting the urge was difficult. He had to get this thing away from him as soon as possible, or it was gong to drive him crazy.

”Sweet,” he muttered, not caring to disguise his awe as he handed it back, stuffing his hands in the pockets of his school robes, so as to make sure they wouldn’t snatch the broom away, against his better judgment. It wasn’t his fault, he couldn’t help the fact that he craved to fly in the air on a top of the line broom. It was only natural.

“Yeah, I’d at least like to practice with the team, you know? Or at least practice with a team of other firsties, or something,” Zane said wistfully. He had to stuff his hands back into his pockets again, as his left hand had began to stray out, potentially to snatch that broom back again.

“Really? Cool, maybe she knows my brother, Law – he’s on the Teppenpaw reserve. Don’t think he ever got any playing time, though,” he added, as an afterthought. It wasn’t fair, Law didn’t take Quidditch seriously enough, and he had at least gotten to practice with the team last year. All Zane could do was sit in the stands.

“At least we know our house has a good team, right?” he said, trying to be optimistic. A good team that he could challenge himself by practicing with… next year.

“Flying lessons?” he said in disbelief. Wasn’t that only for muggleborns who hadn’t ever even seen a flying broom before? “It will probably be really babyish. They’re soon right? Sooner they are, the sooner we can fly,” he added unnecessarily, mostly for himself. If he were allowed to fly on a regular basis, then maybe he wouldn’t have the desire to snatch the nearest broom and take it for a ride.

We're a little late for New Years. by Josh

Josh was relieved to see that Zane held the broom like it would break at any moment. Talking about Quidditch was driving him insane, but that was all he really wanted to talk about. In his opinion, Quidditch was the only thing worth talking about! Honestly, what else was there? Summer? Well, summer consisted of Quidditch. Back home? Back home he played on a competition team with Renaye. Family? Irene was on the Pecari team and Renaye played with him. Well, there was Elaina. She was the only one who didn't really get that into Quidditch. She was more into photography and artsy stuff. Josh didn't really understand that. If he had to choose between painting or flying... It wasn't much of a choice.

“Sweet,"

Josh smiled and nodded, taking it back and laying it on his bed. Despereately wanted to run to the Quidditch pitch and just fly. Do something that involved defying gravity.

“Really? Cool, maybe she knows my brother, Law – he’s on the Teppenpaw reserve. Don’t think he ever got any playing time, though,”

Josh shrugged. "Not really sure. Some of her friends came over to my Uncle's house while I was staying there, but I'm pretty sure most of the were Pecari and I think there was one or two Aladrens."

“It will probably be really babyish. They’re soon right? Sooner they are, the sooner we can fly,”

Josh nodded. "Yeah, I just want to get them over with. It's driving me insane waiting for them!"

Josh wondered vaugely wether Raye was done packing. He really wanted her to meet Zane. She would flip. And Irene. He wasn't sure if she really knew about the Coopers, but she would reccognize the name for sure. Maybe they could walk around in the Gardens or something? Josh turned to Zane.

"You want to head to the Labyrinth Gardens or something? It'd be cool for you to meet Raye and Irene," Josh said. "If you want to finish unpacking or something that's cool too," he added.

We're getting kind of close to Halloween by Zane

Zane thought of the summer he had spent at home with his brothers - no, Law hadn't gone to any Quidditch games. Strange, why would his brother have missed that? To go on the family camping trip? They went on that trip a couple of times of year, and while it was fun, it just didn;'t compare to the coolness of Quidditch. Besides, if his brother wanted to make starter this year, he probably should have practiced more over the summer. But no, instead Law had opted to only play a little Quidditch (or, a "little" to Zane), to help out at the family store, to do summer homework, and to pursue other interests. Hah! What else could be as interesting as Quidditch?

"Well, technically, we are Aladrens," Zane grinned, "True Aladrens, really, from Aladren, Oregon. It would have been cool to be sorted into the house named after my hometown, but I'm no brainiac."

Noticing his hands were beginning to wander out of his pockets again, he stuffed them back down, balling them into fists, so that they wouldn't snatch at any flying brooms that just happened to be nearby. Namely Josh's broom. He would hate to make an enemy out of such a potentially cool roomie.

"Like I actually want to unpack," he said sarcastically, with a grin because he was secretly glad for an excuse to get out of the room with the broom in it, and better yet, to go outside, "Yeah, sure, I'll go. I need to learn my way around this place, anyway."
