Anyone for breakfast? by Tess Whittaker

Tess had returned to her dorm room after her morning swim. She was glad she’d found the MARS room, having been concerned about whether or not she’d be able to continue swimming at Sonora. She’d actually been in her regional swimming team back in England, and was used to swimming pretty much every other day, a habit she intended to keep.

She got changed into her uniform (having just worn casual clothes over her swimsuit previously), and ran a brush through her hair. She couldn’t really be bothered to dry it, especially as she didn’t know which spell to use, and hadn’t brought her muggle hairdryer with her. She’d have to ask her mother in her next letter home. The thought of writing home brought a quick feeling of homesickness, but Tess turned her thoughts to practical things such as the classes she might have that day, and breakfast. Talking of breakfast, she was feeling rather hungry after her swim.

Walking down from her dorm room to the common room, Tess hoped that someone else would be there, preferably a first year that would be equally unsure of what to do on the first proper day. Being the only new Pecari girl, she had no roommates (she still hadn’t worked out whether the lack of company was good or bad), and didn’t particularly want to go down to breakfast alone. As she reached the common room, she stopped to look around.
