Caedence was greatful to see her familiar dorm room. She hadn't liked her break at all. First, she had to go to the hospital almost every day, smell the clean hospital room smell, fell the cold rooms, see those ugly green walls, see her mom hooked up to all those machines! It was enough to drive her over the edge with nerves and built up anger. Plus, her father had broken her wand, and scratched her cheek.

She touched the large bandage over the scratch. It wasn't a bad cut, not like she hadn't gotten worse, but it was the first time her father actually attacked her. He had always been cold, distant, talking only to make her feel bad about herself, but he had never been violent before. She sank down on her bed, pulling out the two pieces of her wand. What was she going to do to get a new one?

Plus, she hadn't gotten her anual present of fudge from her mom. She kind of missed it. However much her mom annoyed her, at least she loved Caedence. Unlike her stupid father.

She clutched the broken wand tightly in her hand, not noticing the wood pressing hard into her palm. What wouldn't she give to just leave her house? To never come back? To stay here, at Sonora, forever! She gave a longing sigh at the thought before reeling herself back into reality. That would never ever happen. Not for her.

She wiped her eye as an angry tear began to form. She really needed to get rid of this weak habit! Blinking a bit to clear her eyes, she jumped slightly as the door opened. Out of habit, she raised her wand hand, only to realise that if her wand wasn't in her left hand, it would be useless anyways. She glared hotly at the intruder. Just let it be Danae, she'd love to give that girl a piece of her mind right now!

Don't hurt me, okay? by Elly

It was decidedly odd coming back after midterm. By now Elly was used to Sonora, and coming back was starting to feel more like coming home than going back to her parents did. Since her first holiday Elly had looked forward to coming back to school, but this year it seemed as though everyone else felt the same way, too. It might have been her imagination, but Elly thought that the wagon ride back had seemed different. She’d over heard some stories about this and that, and all in all it sounded like nobody had a good holiday. That was a shame, considering that Elly had had one of the best holidays in living memory.

Elly was heading towards the common room, hoping to find Caedence in order to ask how her holidays had been and to give her a Christmas present. Despite the fact that she’d never spoken directly about it, Elly got the impression that Caedence had a bit of a rough time of it outside of school. She had once mentioned that the local children teased her. Judging by her school behaviour, Elly suspected Caedence got into a lot of fights when she was at home, and if that was the case it was no wonder she didn’t seem to ever want to go back in the holidays.

Pushing open the door to the commons, Elly was pleased to discover that Caedence was already there. The smile she’d been about to offer was quickly retracted however when she saw Caedence. For a start the girl was glaring her patented Look of Hate, which was never a good sign. Secondly she had a bandage over her cheek. Thirdly, and this was what unnerved Elly most, it looked suspiciously like she had been crying.

“Oh Caedence!” Elly said, part in surprise, part in sympathy, despite the fact that Caedence would hate to be pitied. Elly couldn’t help it; one of her friends looked to be in trouble and she was powerless to do anything but care. Elly hurried over to Caedence’s bed and sat down next to her, strongly fighting the urge to throw her arms around her and give her a big hug. Elly struggled for words for just a moment, completely unsure of what to say. “How … Are you … Is everything okay?” she finally gibbered, though genuine concern was creasing her brow as she tried to catch Caedence’s eye.

It's a good thing that she likes you, lol by Caedence

Caedence’s glare slipped off her face at the sight of Elly. At least it was her friend. She was about to reach into her trunk for Elly’s present, when Elly sat down next to her offering sympathy. She almost gagged. Honestly, was everyone at this school bent on offering sympathy and prying into her life? At least Caedence didn’t hit her friend. “How … Are you … Is everything okay?”

She sighed, “Everything’s fine, Elly. Nothing at all is wrong…“she said softly. Should she tell her friend what happened? Should she tell Elly about her father? About her mom? She didn’t know what to do. She hoped her confusion didn’t show on her face.

After a moment, she decided to tell part of her story. “Remember me telling you about my summer not being the greatest? Well…mom’s in the hospital with heart problems and my wand got broken by my dad. That’s what’s wrong.” Good, not too much information and enough to get Elly informed. A bit blunt, granted, but it worked.

She opened her trunk. Pulling out a wrapped box, she said, “Speaking of my mom in the hospital, I bought this at the gift shop for you.” she held it out to Elly. It held a tiny orange tabby kitten doll that meowed when it was squeezed. She knew Elly liked cute things like that, so she hoped that it was a good gift. Plus, a change of topic was due anyways.

OOC: I'd guess this is after Caedence's 'talk' with Hyana in the gardens, right?

BIC:

“Everything’s fine, Elly. Nothing at all is wrong,” Caedence said. Elly didn’t believe that for a second, but she couldn’t very well make Caedence tell her what was wrong if she didn’t want to. She bit her lower lip, and was considering just nodding and leaving it at that, when Caedence saved her the indecision by speaking again. She said that her mother had been ill and her father hand broken her wand. Neither of these explanations could give reason to the obvious wound on her cheek, but they were nevertheless enough to make Elly sit silent in surprise. No wonder Caedence looked like she had been crying.

Still in some sort of shock, Elly barely noticed the gift that Caedence had given her. “Thanks,” she mumbled. “I’ve got a present for you, too.” Rather than getting up to retrieve Caedence’s present from her trunk, Elly stayed put and looked back to her friend. What she really wanted to do was give her a big hug and talk it all through, but this was Caedence, and if Elly did that she might not escape with her life. Instead, she tried a less sentimental tack, hoping it would be more on Caedence’s level. “The medic could fix your cheek,” she said. “But I guess you’ll have to buy a new wand.”

Not knowing what else to say, she looked down at the fluffy toy in her hands, and blinked in surprise as it mewed at her. Elly suddenly grinned. “Caedence this is the cutest thing ever!” she said. “Look, I’m sorry to hear about your Mum. And your Dad. You know you can tell me about this stuff if you want to.”

Finally shifting, Elly stood and placed the kitten on her own pillow. She took the box of chocolates she’d bought for Caedence from her trunk – the shop had gift-wrapped it in blue and silver sparkly stuff – and passed it to her friend. It didn’t seem enough, though, and before Elly could stop herself, she said, “And you can always come stay with me in the summer, if you want.”

Well, perfect moment to pull out the chocolate! ^_^ by Caedence

OOC: Yeah, I figured since that post got over and done with, we could make this after that.

Caedence smiled a bit. Well, it wasn't a smile, so much as the corners of her mouth twitched upwards. So Elly liked her present. She was happy, since she knew her friend liked cute fluffy make-you-wanna-gag type things like that. She didn't know why, but Elly always had a habit of making her feel...normal.

The upward tilt of her mouth wavered, to be replaced with a small frown. She wasn't sure why, but she did feel like telling Elly something about what happened. If just to have someone know. SHe marveled at how weak that sounded and scolded herself. People had no right to her life, and she wasn't about to tell them now! Not Elly, not Connell, not even that Hyana girl.

The frown was also replaced by confusion. “And you can always come stay with me in the summer, if you want.” Come and stay with her? Was that allowed? Did friends do that sort of stuff? Should she offer to have Elly come stay with her as well? What in the world was the proper way to handle this?

"Uh..." she began. To distract herself, she glanced at her gift. Chocolates. She gave them a small smile. Elly didn't know it, but she just made Caedence happy. For the first time in a couple weeks, she was happy. Another present! Her second one in the year! So what if the other kids had toys and games and bikes? She got two presents!

"Well..." she began akwardly, avoiding Elly's gaze. What was she to say? Was it right to say 'okay'? What would normal kids say? "Am I allowed to do that? Is that normal of friends?" Oh great Caede, way to blow it, "I mean, sure, that'd be fun..." she added, "Maybe you'd like to come to my house... or not..." she continued. Why won't my mouth stop moving? she thought before finishing, "I like the chocolates, want to share?"

Chocolate is always good :) by Elly

Elly couldn’t help but laugh a little when Caedence asked if it was normal for friends to visit each other, but she was more laughing with her than laughing at her. “Well me and Echo went to stay with Mere a couple of days over midterm,” she said. “You don’t have to if you don’t want to, you know. I thought you might like to come see where I live, just hang out and relax for a week or so.” She took back her seat on Caedence’s bed, curling her feet up underneath her.

At the offer of chocolates, Elly grinned and laughed a bit more. “I’d love to share,” she said, “if you want.” Inwardly Elly was marvelling at how well Caedence seemed to be taking all this. Sympathy, chocolates, a kitten, and home invites, all so far without any violence and very little scowling. She was even half-sure Caedence managed a half-smile. See, miracles could happen.

“You know,” Elly said, taking a chocolate from the box Caedence was offering, “I would come and stay with you if you wanted me to. I mean, if you stay with me you will have to put up with my Mum.” Elly rolled her eyes and popped the chocolate – a hazelnut cluster – in her mouth. “She’s a bit weird about the whole magic thing but she’ll be at work most of the time, anyway. I sort of have the house to myself in the summer.”

“Well me and Echo went to stay with Mere a couple of days over midterm. You don’t have to if you don’t want to, you know. I thought you might like to come see where I live, just hang out and relax for a week or so.”

Caedence laughed a bit, not out of humor or anything, but just out of relief. So it was a normal thing. Friends did it all the time. Boy, she had a lot to learn. She didn’t know what was harder, learning how to fight from her idol back home, or learning how to be a friend. Scratch that, friendship was way harder.

“I would like it,” she said, really meaning it, “It’ll be fun, learning about where you live. I live in the suburbs in Illinois, so it’s a fair trip to wherever you live, I’m sure. How will we get there? Brooms? Portkey?

“You know, I would come and stay with you if you wanted me to. I mean, if you stay with me you will have to put up with my Mum. She’s a bit weird about the whole magic thing but she’ll be at work most of the time, anyway. I sort of have the house to myself in the summer.”

Caedence’s look became distant. Withdrawn. She was sure Elly wouldn’t like her house, even if she did come over. “My father…” she sighed, “He…doesn’t like magic too well…” her voice was almost monotonous, “He…hates it really. So I don’t know how he’d react to you… Mom’s a witch, but she’s bad with magic, so Father refuses to believe she has magic… he thinks it’s why she’s sick. Magic.” She breathed deeply, to prevent herself from getting emotional again.

“It’ll be nice, having the house to ourselves. We could hang out, then? What would we do?” She grabbed a chocolate from the box. Smirking, she realized it was mint chocolate. Her face brightened a bit, but her eyes remained sad.Her father’s frenzied screams echoing in her mind, a constant loop, Fix her! Fix her! Fix her!….\n

Indeed by Elly

“I would like it,” Caedence said, and Elly smiled widely at her. It would probably be fun to have Caedence stay over. They pretty much lived together the rest of the year anyway so it wouldn’t be much different having her in London, except there’d be no magic. And her mother would get used to it soon enough, Elly thought. “It’ll be fun, learning about where you live. How will we get there?” Caedence asked.

“Portkey, I guess,” Elly said, as that was how she had travelled to Nashville the other week. She made a mental note to ask Mere how she got the whole thing sorted – Elly didn’t know the first thing about organising a portkey, but she did know it was by far the easiest, if not most comfortable, mode of travel she’d encountered.

Elly sat quietly again while Caedence divulged a little more of her home life. Elly noticed how her friend became sort of withdrawn when she spoke about being home and about her family. Elly desperately wanted to help, but she guess the best way she could help Caedence right now was just to listen, and be there if she was ever needed. Caedence wasn’t the sort of person who could be coerced into being comforted – she had to find the way by herself. Within a moment, though, Caedence had moved back to their plans for the summer. “What would we do?” she asked.

“Er,” Elly shrugged. “I dunno.” She had spent a lot of the last summer playing hockey, but she wasn’t planning on doing that this year, partly because Vicky would be too old to be on the team again, and Elly wasn’t really fussed about playing with anyone else. “I could show you round London, I guess.” That was what people tended to do – the city was forever full of tourists. Elly lived right at the end of the Northern line, so it was easy enough to get to Town. “We could go swimming or just sit in and drink milkshakes,” she laughed. “Whatever you want, really. If my Dad’s around he’ll drive us places. My Mum might, but she works during the week. We could have barbeques and stuff. Any of that sound good to you?”

Now she thought about it, Elly didn’t know what Caedence did in her spare time. She knew she liked Quidditch, but that wasn’t really an option at her house. She’d seen her reading a lot, too – mostly Quidditch books. “Or did you have something else in mind?” she asked as an afterthought.

Caedence nodded. Portkeying made sense if Elly lived in London…well near it. She doubted they could floo, since both houses were muggle. Well, she really didn’t care how she got there, rather how soon she could. She smiled a bit as well, the pains from midterms beginning to heal. She didn’t know what it was, but being with Elly always made her feel normal, and wish she really was. If it wasn’t for her stupid habit of being overly huggy. Well, at least she refrained from hugging Caedence. That was a plus.

She listened to Elly’s description of what they could do. She was amazed. What was life like, when you weren’t a street kid? It sounded so grand. It sounded…nice. She wanted to be a part of it. She was happy to be so, soon enough. For once in her life, she looked forward to summer.

“No, that all sounds cool. If you’d like, I could teach you some fighting skills, or help you out with quidditch or whatever. I don’t really think I have anything in mind. I like your ideas. It sounds like fun. I can’t wait to meet your mom and.. dad,” She couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy at the thought of a dad, a real one. She hoped that Elly’s family accepted her. She also hoped that they weren’t all huggy.

“Have you ever told them about me? I mentioned you to mom once, but I don’t think she really paid too much attention. She has her head in the clouds all the time.” She smiled a bit.

“So, just hang out, drink shakes, maybe sightsee. I’d like that a lot. It sounds so…” She smiled and held up a hand as if to say that she couldn’t find a word great enough to fill in the blank. “I can’t wait, my first sleepover.”

She looked at Elly seriously, “Thanks, Elly, for trying out being my friend last year. I think without you, I’d still be so…antisocial. I talked to Eavan Valentine and that Kamiya kid, even though she decided to be a jerk and I had to teach her a lesson about how people are supposed to speak to me. Last year, no offence, but I thought you were an annoying redhead that tried too hard to get me to like her. Now, you’re my best friend. Thanks,” she scooted slightly to one side, just enough to keep out of hug range but not to appear rude either. \n

“If you’d like, I could teach you some fighting skills, or help you out with Quidditch or whatever.” Caedence said.

Elly raised her eyebrows. She wasn’t party to this fighting malarkey that Caedence and a couple of other students seemed to appreciate. Elly would always rather solve matters without violence where at all possible. “Well I don’t have a broom or much of a garden and I live in a Muggle street, so I’m not sure we’ll be doing much Quidditch,” she replied. Though when Caedence said she was looking forward to meeting her parents, Elly couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t get your hopes up about my Mum,” she said. “Really. She’s never liked any friends of mine so I don’t know what you think makes you so special,” she grinned. “But you’ll love my Dad, if you even meet him. He’s away a lot.” Elly shrugged. She would appreciate her Dad being around more often, if truth be told, but she had grown up with him never being around, so it wasn’t an issue that caused her much concern.

“Have you ever told them about me?” Cadence asked.

“Of course,” Elly replied. “My Mum… well she knows you exist, anyway. I think she knows we share this dorm,” she said rolling her eyes. “Dad knows about you though, about you being a Chaser and how you help me out all the time.” Elly had met Caedence when she needed help in transfiguration, and ever since then Caedence had always been there when Elly needed her, like with that weird itching last term.

Elly was thrilled that Caedence was actually looking forward to coming to visit her. She was no longer having second thoughts – it would be excellent fun having Caedence to stay. She smiled broadly when Caedence thanked her for being a friend. Really, it wasn’t like Elly made much of an effort to be friends, it was something that came naturally to her. True, Caedence did require a little more effort than others, but that was okay. It was moments like this that made it worth it… which is why Elly decided to ignore the comment about having to teach Hyana a lesson.

“Last year, no offence, but I thought you were an annoying redhead that tried too hard to get me to like her.” (Elly laughed) “Now you’re my best friend. Thanks.”

“You’re more than welcome,” Elly said. She didn’t hug Caedence as was her instinct, but she did give her a gentle nudge instead. “And you sure everything is okay? I’ll hang around if you want me too, but otherwise I was gonna go find Josiah to get my Puffskein back. He was looking after it for me over midterm,” she said.

Caedence watched for a reaction from her friend after Caedence’s thanks. She was happy that Elly resisted being Elly-ish and just hugging her, instead opting for a small nudge. She grinned. Elly was a good friend, and she couldn’t wait till summer. This summer, she didn’t have to deal with her dad, plus her mom would be out of the hospital, meaning if she could get a hold of an owl, she could send her news of the trip. Now that she thought about it, her mother should be out soon anyways. The doctors said it would be before Caedence’s birthday (which was in February).

“And you sure everything is okay? I’ll hang around if you want me too, but otherwise I was gonna go find Josiah to get my Puffskein back. He was looking after it for me over midterm“

She gave Elly a stern look. The look held no venom, but it clearly told her friend ‘I’m okay, I’ve talked all I feel comfortable talking, go away’. “Have fun with Josiah,” Teased Caedence, “And if he’s rude or over flirty, just let me know and I’ll take care of him,” she joked, smiling to let Elly know she wasn’t serious. “Seriously, go ahead, I’m sure Custard misses you! We can talk later.”\n
