Seretly hoping no one's home TAG Prof Connell by Caedence

Caedence didn't want to do this. It wasn't like her at all. In fact, she thought others who did it were weak. What was she doing? Looking for someone to talk to.

Why her head then? Why not Elly? Caedence didn't know at all. Maybe she felt closer to her head after sharing a breif glance at her homelife. She had never told Elly how rough life at home was. How her father looked at Caedence, how the kids in the neighborhood hated her, how she never knew what the word 'friend' meant. Sure, she had one now, but she wasn't even sure if friends told eachother their life stories.

But what broght on this sudden urge to talk? It was all in the letter clutched in Caedence's left hand.

Caedence,
Your mother is ill, I am afraid to report. She is having problems with her heart, I do not believe you are old enough to know the details, but all I can tell you is that she is fine for the moment. You are to come home, however, over the holidays, do not ask questons. She wishes you to visit her in her hospital room. Come home the first day of holidays.

-Mr. Redoak

Caedence didn't know what was wrong, but it sounded like her father. Formal, stiff, and with no family love at all. She knew that 'you are not old enough to know' meant, 'I wouldn't give you the time of day, much less the condition of your mother's health.' She had been concerned, she'd have ot admit, until she sent an owl to her mother and got the reply that was tucked in her pocket.

My Dearest,
How touching that you'd be so sweet as to write me! Wasn't your daddy kind to tell you what was going on? I don't want to make you come home at all, I just wanted to see you over the holidays. If you're having fun with your darling little friends, that is fine. Stay over there.

Kisses, and hugs, much love, Mommy

She had then wrote to her father to tell him that she had permission and was not coming home. His reply were five words, clutched in the hand with his other letter, 'I said no questions, come home' She did not want to, but she could see no other solution. She didn't want to see her dad. She didn't want to endure the kids showing off thier presents in the streets and forcing her into scuffles just because they thought she'd steal them. Most of all, she didn't want to deal with her mom's illness, whatever it may be, because she knew her dad would blame her.

She raised her empty hand, but hesitated. It was a little after lunch. She didn't think the Professor had a class today. She didn't really know why, but she had mixed feelings of not wanting a chat, and wanting one. Before she could change her mind and bolt away, she kocked three sharp times on the door. Regretting it, she glanced around the room, as if looking for an escape. None came to her as the door was opened. \n\n

That makes me feel loved... by Professor Connell

OOC: Yes, I really am alive.

Marian Connell wasn't used to being treated like an actual head-of-house, and wasn't sure what to think about the new attitude some of the students seemed to be taking towards her. Yes, it was nice to be given the proper amount of respect, and it was always a pleasant feeling when the people she was in charge of actually came for her advice, and of course it was nicer than when she'd had students actually hexing her, but...it just felt strange, for her to be taken so seriously, and have students needing her.

Still, it appeared she was making some progress, if the figure that she found waiting upon opening her office door was any indication. Marian had the afternoon off, and hadn't been expecting there to be anything for her to do. But then the knock had come, so Marian had set aside the potions book she'd been reading (it was sad, really, how little of a life she had after being a teacher so long), and gone to open it.

"Oh, hello, Caedence," she said after a moment, getting her shock under control. When all was said and done, she hadn't expected to see the girl outside of classes much again, after their last (fairly unsuccessful) talk. "Please, come in and make yourself comfortable. Is there a problem of some sort?" \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Don't worry, Caedence's author likes you by Caedence

OOC: You're forgiven, RL is a bugger, aint it?

BIC: Caedence was begining to know this room rather well. All three times werent for very good reasons. All three were fights. This time between herself and her father. She made herself comfortable in the chair she had sat in earlier that year. She glanced at the desk noticing the book. Oops, her Head was reading. She hoped that Connell wasn't mad or anything. Which was an indicator of how much she had grown in a year. Last year, she wouldn't care at all.

"Umm..." she wasn't sure how to begin. She took her mother's letter out of her pocket, put her father's first letter on top and his second note on bottom. She held them out, "This explains why I'm here. But, to save you the trouble of reading them if you don't want to, I'll explain."

She took a deep breath, not wanting to come off as angry as she felt right now. Sympathy was what she needed. Sonora is what she needed. Her father couldn't take that away no matter how he tried!

"Mother is ill, and so father requested I come home. Just let's say he doesn't usually want me home. So, I asked mother what was wrong and could I stay. She said yes, so I sent an owl to father telling him so. He made it clear to me that I was to come home. Professor, I can't go home. I cant..." she whispered the last 'can't' looking at her head with pleading eyes.

Let her understand, she begged silently, please let her understand. Christmas was always the worst time at home. The most fights, both in the house and out. It was the most stress. And to top it off, it was the most dissapointing. No presents, except from her mother. A small trinket here and there, nothing special. No Santa Claus. No gingerbread men. Just fudge made by her mother and cold glares, colder than the wind outside, from her father. She couldn't do it, and she wouldn't She didn't care if the Professor had no solution for her, she'd stay here! \n\n

Even when I inadvertently misspell your name? by Professor Connell

OOC: Sorry for the name misspelling. I’ll work to not repeat it. And, just for future reference, I understand that replying was taking me a while, and I apologize. But you might wish to save any other posts dealing with the subject of a current one until after that thread is finished, because otherwise it can cause continuity problems. BIC

To think that Marian had thought for any period of time that this discussion might be a good thing, with regards to developing a more positive relationship between her student and herself than the consistent punishment for fights. Yes, the fact that Caedence was confiding in her, or just someone in general, when she had problems was a positive step. But, obvious though it was precisely what Caedence wanted to hear, Marian was also just as aware that she couldn’t give that advice.

To stall, even though she didn’t want to admit she was doing that, Marian glanced over the letters. Their contents were, for the most part, precisely what the second year had said of them. The parents both seemed slightly out of touch with reality, particularly the mother (Marian couldn’t help but be slightly amused by the phrase ‘darling little friends.’ Somehow, it didn’t fit with what the professor had seen.) And that worried Marian more than the father, who was probably the reason Caedence had claimed domestic problems in the first place.

“I think I understand why you would prefer to stay here,” Marian began after a pause, cautiously. “However, you are under seventeen years of age. Therefore, the choice about what you do over your holidays remains up to your parent’s judgment, not your own. If your father tells you that he wants you to come home, then, legally, you need to go home.”

Now was the time for the more delicate conversation material. If something was going to make her student angry, this was probably it. Generally, people didn’t like hearing negative suggestions about their parents (when they were fond of them), and, if Marian had felt like there was any way around this, she would have taken it. However, there wasn’t anything that could be done. “Also, have you considered that your mother’s condition is perhaps more serious than she is letting on, and she just doesn’t want to worry you? That your father is just trying to create an opportunity for you to spend more time with her, on the chance that there isn’t all that much left? I’d have to advise you to think about that before you make any drastic decisions, and go home with your family for Christmas.”

Marian sat down, trying to gauge just how explosive a reaction was going to be occurring in a moment. With this particular student, it was almost impossible to tell sometimes, although Marian doubted that the response to her advice was going to be a pleasant one. Still, she couldn’t have said anything else, both as a professor, and as a person being asked for help, so she was just going to have to deal with whatever came.

Even then *winks* by Caedence

OOC: Okay, and that WTS post was before this conversation, just FYI if you read that. And like I said, I totally understand RL, it's not a biggie at all. Nor is the name really, just a minor peeve of mine.

BIC: Caedence had hoped the professor would understand and would do something. She had been wrong. Dead wrong. Caedence's mouth fell at the thought of her dad 'wanting her to spend time with her mother'. Honestly? He probably was blaming her for whatever 'illness' was going on! Though it did make sense, her mother not wanting to worry her. Whatever her feelings about her mother's nauseatingly sweetness towards her, she did care about the woman. After all, her mother was the only one that cared about Caedence at home, and had given her permission to keep her puffskein.

But, why in the world couldn't the blasted woman in front of her do anything? Why? She had thought that heads of houses were supposed to... she didn't know, wave their wands and make it all better! They were supposed to solve problems! And Professor Connell claimed she understood? What a joke!

With whatever strength she had left, she kept herself from glaring at the woman. "I...hate him," She said shakily, one hand began to clench and unclench in her anger, "But if you say I have to..." she continued, glad her wand wasn't near her, "I will go home." she finished.

"But I don't think he even cares! He doesn't care about mom, or me! He doesn't I'm telling you! He...just wants me around to ignore or blame!" Her voice was just under a shout now. She began to breathe slowly and count backwards. She had been working on that, to keep herself from lashing out at people who annoyed her. "I-I," she started again, "Maybe mom isn't okay, and maybe I need to spend time with her, but I hate that man! I hate him! And if I have to go home, I will. I guess."

Finally finished, she continued breathing, (In, hold, out, hold. Ten, nine, eight...) until she was sure she wouldn't do anything that would cause her to get into trouble. She didn't even notice the marks her nails left on her clenched fists.

Just the thought of her father was enough to make her mad, but to be told she had to stay with him, all midterms, was enough to have her kick even Jae. And Jae was one of the few people that could get even Caedence to laugh. She looked at Connell, unsure if her outburst might have caused any further problems. She didn't want another detention.\n\n
