In the common room by Irene Liddowe

OOC: Fuzzy Time, a few days later...

Irene looked up from her spot on the couch as a soft pecking sound met her ears. Sitting on the window sill outside was a tawney owl with a letter clamped in its beak. It was around nearing sunset and she wasn't sure who the letter was for. She opened the window and allowed the owl to deposit its letter in her hand before it fluttered out the window.

Irene felt her heart leap as she reccognized her name in her Uncle's handwriting scrawled across the front. She unfolded the letter and began to scan its contents.

Hey Irene!
How's your year going? Good, I hope. Not too much going on here either... Your Aunt Claera dropped by and left me with all three of your cousins. Apparently she and your Uncle Will are heading to the Bahamas. The left me this mile long list about your cousins "scheduals."

Irene frowned. This didn't seem like him. He usually just asked how she was, what's been happening, and a 'you better try out for Quidditch squirt!' He never evaluated on what was going on at home. She had always guessed it was because he didn't want to make her homesick.

What worried her was her knowledge of her Uncle's nervous habits. He tended to ramble when he may be keeping something from her. The only things he ever kept from her was news about her father and no news was good news.

Renaye has been begging me to bring you home for the weekend but I told her, "Too bad, kid. You'll have to deal with just me." I don't think she was too happy with that. haha.

Anyways, stick to your studies and try not to sneak off at night too much! I don't want to deal with four crazy kids running around! You know I love you and see you when I see you.

Uncle Mike

Something was definitely not going well whatever it may be. Her imagination picked the worst possible scenario as she pictured Uncle Mike telling her that she was being sent away to live with her Dad. Her heart began to race as she let herself get carried away with her imagination. The absolute last thing she wanted was to go back to the alchohol-hole her Dad called "home." She had lived there for 7 years and she didn't want to spend a second more.

Irene noticed a shadow cross the parchment and turned to see someone standing by her shoulder.

"Can I help you?"\n\n

And what does one generally do in a common room? by Jaeven 'Jae' Dimitri

Jae had lost his wandstick.

That wasn't good. Aunt Cheri had spent nearly a hundred dollars on it in a shop on Pearl Street Mall. The girl who was selling the wandsticks has looked at him really scary and told him that wandsticks were very, very special and not to even consider losing it. And he had. Jae wasn't sure how or when, but he had lost the wandstick. After spending fifteen minutes looking behind chairs and in random nooks and crannies, Jae decided it was time. He would go for a couch reconnaissance.

Squaring his shoulders and making sure Todd was tucked into the pocket of his cargo pants with Jenny, his kitten, Jae marched over to the couch. There was a girl there with a letter. She turned to him and asked if she could help him.

"I'm Jae," he replied, nodding his head seriously. The nodding caused his blond dreadlocks to bounce around a bit. "I lost my wandstick. Can you help me find it? Aunt Cheri and Aunt Marla won't be happy if I lose it forever. And I don't think I can do Charms or anything without it, right?"\n\n

Look for wands, apparently. by Irene Liddowe

Irene watched as a boy continued to search around the couch she was sitting at.

"I'm Jae," The boy replied. "I lost my wandstick. Can you help me find it? Aunt Cheri and Aunt Marla won't be happy if I lose it forever. And I don't think I can do Charms or anything without it, right?"

Irene nodded. "Ouch. That's not good. Sure, I'll help you out," Irene said placing her letter to Uncle Mike on the table. She tucked a stray brown hair away from her blue-green eyes.

"My Uncle looses his wand all the time. I'm his lifeline when it comes to that thing," Irene said with a smile. That letter she had recieved was so unlike Uncle Mike. She was possitive something was wrong but she wasn't sure what it could be. Her sense of curiosity was back in action again.

She looked over at Jae and realized she had forgotten to mention her own name.

"Oh, my name's Irene. Nice to meet you."\n\n

Oh, that's good, then. by Jae

"Hey, thanks!" Jae chirped, poking about in the couch. "Your uncle loses his wandstick? My aunts never do. At least, I don't think so. Mostly 'cause they don't have one, I think. Aunt Cheri probably wouldn't lose it anyway 'cause she's real good at keeping track of stuff, but Aunt Marla might. I dunno. I think it would depend."

Pushing a cushion over, Jae stuck his hand in the back of the couch and fished about for a few moments. Nope. No wandstick. Usually he kept it wedged behind one ear, mostly 'cause Saul had said not to play with it. Mika had said not to play with it either. But then in classes like Charms and Dayda, they had been told to say words with it and make magic. Jae liked magic. It was supermadcool. The brooms that kids rode on were sort of madcool too, but they weren't supermadcool. Horses were better. Except horses couldn't fly and they weren't here. So brooms would have to do.

In Jae's cargo pants pocket, beneath the robes that he had finally gotten on correctly after months of failed attempts, Jenny started squabbling with Todd, both of them making squeaky noises that alternated between purring and complaints. He stuck his hand in and petted the first fuzzy head that came to hand, still fishing around in the back of the couch with the other.\n\n

"He looses it all the time. I don't know how he's dealing without me. I live with my uncle in Northern Michigan. He's pretty much my dad," Irene said peeking under the couch on her hands and knees. She didn't mention her mom or her real dad. Mom usually caused the conversation to become very very quiet and the people usually drifted away. Dad just made people feel sorry for her and only be nice because they thought they had to. Irene liked talking to new people and she didn't want to push them away with her...unusual past. Having fake friendships seemed even worse.

A squeaky sound emitted from near Jae and Irene sat up, glancing in his direction.

"Um...Is that your pocket squeaking?" Irene said with a bit of laughter in her voice. \n\n

"Yeah," Jae nodded when asked if his pocket was squeaking. "Well, no, not really. It's Jenny and Todd. Todd's my Sloyka and Jenny's my kitten. They like to play. And they ride in my pocket a lot."

Jae scooped the two out of his pocket and put them on the couch. Todd was a good size and creamy brown, while Jenny was small and so dark grey that she almost looked blue. After being placed on the couch, Jenny meowed squeakily and insistently at Todd as she nudged him with her forepaws. Todd burbled and rolled obligingly back and forth.

Continuing to search for his wand, Jae ignored his pets. He was used to Jenny and Todd playing by now. They never hurt each other. They just fooled around and growled a little bit. A lot of kids had cats here. Except there weren't any horses. That wasn't fun. Maybe he could talk to Professor K about doing horses for Comec next year. 'Cause that would be fun, right? Even if they weren't magic and couldn't breathe fire or have superlong tongues or something. Horses were still really cool. And they would make awesome animals for Comec. Especially if they got to keep them! Except, Jae didn't think his aunts would let him have another horse. And Nina wouldn't be happy if he brought Chester do school with him.\n\n

Yep by Irene Liddowe

Irene felt herself smiling as Jae scooped his pets out of his pocket. She let out a smll laugh when the pets Jae had introduced as Jenny and Todd began to play.

"I have a kitten. Her name's Gatita. It's Italian for kitten." Irene said stroking the head of the dark grey one. She turned back around and looked around the nearby chairs for the lost wand.

"I don't really speak a lot of Italian. I know a few words but only because my mom was Italian and she would yell at my dad in Italian just to tick him off." Irene vlosed jher eyes for second realizing that she had just brought up the two people she never likes to bring up. No worries, though. This is what "topic changing" is for.

"So where do you htink you might have lost it?" Irene said looking under the nearest chair. \n\n

or, madcool, I should say. by Jae

OOC: Jaeven refers to puffskeins as sloyka(s) because of a small mix-up in COMC. Sorry; I forgot to mention it in the last post.

BIC:

"Oooh!" Jae said when Irene explained that she had a kitten named in Italian. "You're like Mika then! He speaks a lot of languages too. Except you don't have superlong crutches or a wheelchair. I dunno where my wandstick might be. It's not in my dorm room. I already checked, 'cause last time I lost it, my wandstick was actually under my pillow. And I don't think I lost it in classes either. I think it's in here somewhere. Maybe."

After all, his wandstick was very important. All the kids here had wandsticks. It made him wonder sometimes why Nina and Aunt Marla and Aunt Cheri didn't have them. He thought it might be 'cause they were Mooguls. That's what he had heard some other kids use about their parents, anyway. It sounded like the Mooguls couldn't have wandsticks and only if you went to magic school could you have one. Jae wasn't sure, though. If he didn't find his wandstick, would he be kicked out of magic school?! That wouldn't be any fun at all! Then he couldn't be in classes with Mika or anyone, and he probably couldn't keep Todd. So he had to find his wandstick. Fast, before his Hoho found out that he didn't have one.

Jaeven scooted under a large chair and looked around. Beyond several lone dust bunnies clinging to the bottom, there was nothing. Not a single thing that looked even a little bit like his wandstick. Where could it have gone? He was almost out of chairs to look under now. \n\n

Hm..Reminds me of "Mad Cow" xD by Irene

OOC: Oooh! I was wondering about the sloyka! I was going to go look it up in Fantastic Beasts but never got around to it! haha. Good thing I didn't. It wouldn't have been there!

Fast, before his Hoho found out that he didn't have one.
*laughs*
You mean HoH? Had to make fun of you a little but there =] No offense meant.

IC:

"You're like Mika then! He speaks a lot of languages too." Jae said. Irene shrugged.

"I know a little bit of Italian," Irene began, remembering to stay on track. Last time she started rambling off she had almost had to explain everything. "But that's it. Just some basic words"

"I dunno where my wandstick might be. It's not in my dorm room. I already checked, 'cause last time I lost it, my wandstick was actually under my pillow. And I don't think I lost it in classes either. I think it's in here somewhere. Maybe."

"It'll be the last place you look," Irene said with a playful grin.

Irene remembered when Renaye had lost her grandmother's ring. They had looked everywhere for it. Uncle Mike had said "It'll be the last place you look," and earned himself a huge eye rolling from both Irene and her cousin. Irene knew Renaye was 10 and would turn 11 this summer, but how could she know if Raye would be joining her next year?

Irene pulled out a drawer in a nearby desk and found it empty, besides the scattered quills. Heaving a sigh she headed back over the sitting area and lifted the cusion of one of the chairs. With a jolt of excitement Irene spotted a wand wedged between the side of the chair and the cusion. Irene let a triumphant "HA!" and snatched up the wand.

Irene tossed it in the air and said, "Is this the little devil?" \n\n

More benign, I hope. by Jae

OOC: Normal people mean HoH. However, Jae's got this thing about acronyms...ever since Saul 'explained' to him about COMC being Comec and DADA being Dayda, he's made the attempt to use acronyms whenever he can. Which leaves us, yes, with Hohos.

BIC:

"Hey, YEAH!" Jae said, when Irene found his wand. "Thanks! How'd it get there? Was it the little men with the big ears? I saw one once. At least, I think I did. It went away really fast, so I might have been dreaming. But I think it was there. Or maybe it was left over from when I was doing my charms homework! Or maybe it fell out from my ear." He paused and thought for a little. "A pencil did that once, except Nina and I never found it. It was my lucky pencil, too. We found it on the playground during recess."

Jae went over to take the wand and hugged Irene happily. He had his wandstick back! It was good! He could still have fun at Sonora! He wouldn't be kicked out for not having a wandstick! So long as he didn't play with it and kept good track of it he wouldn't get in trouble. Jae loved it when life worked out like that. Letting go of Irene, he skipped happily back to the couch and scooped up Todd and Jenny, petting them happily. Jenny squeaked in protest and squirmed, while Todd made sloyka-noises at all three of them. Maybe he could talk to Professor K about horses. Todd and Jenny were good, but it didn't beat having Chester around. Or at least, some horses. \n\n

Irene let out a small laugh as jae began to talk rather quickly.

"You don't like to talk much, do you?"

Irene was surprised when Jae gave her a hug but patted his back in a 'you welcome' way all the same. He was defintely what Irene wopuld call 'eccentric' and that wasn't exactly a bad thing. In fact, Irene thought it made him a very fun person.

When Jae skipped off to the table to scoop up his pets Irene said,

"So, now that that's taken care of," Irene said patting the head of the kitten, "You seem to really like animals. You must be a dab hand at COMC!" She said smiling.\n\n

'twould probably be a good thing by Jae

“I love animals!” Jae chirped in response to Irene’s statement. “Horses, and dogs, and sloykas, and kittens, and EVERYTHING!! Do you like horses? I ride horses. With Nina, at home. But I don’t think that there are very many horses here. Maybe if I talk to Professor K about riding horses she can get some for us to ride. Maybe magical horses! I love horses. I have a horse at home. His name is Chester. He’s a gelding. Except he’s not all mine, he’s part Nina’s. He lives in a barn over by her house. Except her house is really close to mine, so that’s okay.”

While he was talking, Jae also began bouncing around the room. His blond dreadlocks bounced as he did, and his earring glinted. Fiddling with this, playing with that, and holding his animals, Jae continued talking.

“Do you have any pets? Does your mom make you keep them someplace? My aunts always make me keep my pets out of the kitchen. Even the dogs have to stay out of the kitchen. Aunt Marla says that it’s dirty. Then Aunt Cheri tells me to take them out back or play with Nina. Do you have a friend at home? Nina’s mine. She’s from Mexico. She speaks Spanish like Aunt Cheri, except I don’t think Aunt Cheri’s from Mexico. A lot of people talk Spanish in Colorado. That’s where I live,” he explained solemnly.

Irene was shocked at how fast this boy could talk. She laughed out of amusment at his enthusiasm.

"Whoa, Whoa! Slow down a second. I have a kitten. Her name's Gatita. My mom died when I was 5 so she doesn't really tell me to do much. Renaye is my cousin. She is my best friend. I think she's coming here next year. And I live in Northern Michigan," Irene said tried her best to remember everything.

She really hated it when people brought up her mom but it was hard to keep dancing avoiding the subject. Irene didn't like doing that either. She could talk about mom... but not Damon. Never Damon.

"So you live in Colorado. Ever been into the mountains? We have skiing hills back in Michigan but I think that Mackinac Island is much better! Best fudge in whole world," she said grinning. \n\n

"Fudge? Fudge is madcool! We go into the mountains all the time. Especially into Estes Park. We hike. And then sometimes we see animals, like elks and cougars, once. Well, we saw a cougar once. We see elks all the time. And sometimes we go riding in the mountains. 'Cause we live really really close to the mountains. They look really pretty from our house. Like a postcard! Or a drawing by a really good artist. Like the artists who draw on the sidewalk at the mall!"

Irene said that her mom died when she was five. That wasn't good. Jae would be sad if one of his aunts died. Consequently, he hugged her. Hugging was just something Jae did. Nothing big, really, although some people didn't appreciate it. Not that he ever noticed. Or, rather, he mostly failed to notice. Echo Elms was one of the few exceptions. Echo Elms and his elementary school principal. They didn't like Jae very much. That made him sad. Jae didn't like it when people didn't like him very much. He didn't understand why either. Nina and Aunt Marla and Aunt Cheri had tried to explain it several times, but it hadn't worked any of them. Jaeven just didn't understand that not everyone could be liked by everyone else.

OOC: It looks like this is kind of dying. So...whenever you're ready to close up shop, do so. Jae doesn't exactly have any pressing apointments or anything.\n\n

After mentioning her mother, Irene found herself in another hug and she patted Jae's back a few times in thanks. Irene was definitely a hugging person. She liked to hug and be hugged! Jae seemed to think along those lines too.

"This has been really fun, but I have to finsh this letter or my uncle will think I've died!" She laughed.
