(Room Four) Taking a break by Autumn Collins

The only time Autumn relaxed and felt like she could totally be herself, express what was inside of her was when she drew or painted. Of course, if one of her paintings didn't look right to her, she didn't take it very well but for the most part it was a freeing experience.

Therefore, Autumn spent an awful lot of time in the arts and crafts room in MARS. Unfortunately, she was getting there less and less. She wanted perfect CATS and perfect grades so Autumn had to study an awful lot. She was incredibly stressed out and it was starting to get to her. The Crotalus hardly ate. Nor did she sleep very well and sometimes Autumn just broke down and cried at the thought of studying anymore.

This was one of those times. Words in her Potions text were swirling together. Making her dizzy and bit nauseous. The walls of her Autumn's dorm room were starting to close in on her and she was pretty sure that she was going to go out of her mind if she stayed in there much longer.

Autumn didn't really want to take a break. To do so would mean that she might do less than perfectly in class and on her CATS. She had a Charms paper due that she had serious doubts about-it was nearly finished but Autumn didn't think it was good enough. However at this point, she felt she had no choice. The fourth year felt that she literally could not study anymore.

So she made her way to the art room. As she gazed around, Autumn wished she could come down here more often, but for now, getting perfect grades and perfect CATS was more important. She walked over to where the canvases were kept and selected one, then found an easel,a brush and some paints. The Crotalus dipped her brush into the blue paint and began expressing herself.

Looking for fun by Kitty McLevy

On another one of her rambling walks I am NOT lost, who wanted to go the gardens today anyway? Kitty stumbled upon the MARS rooms. These rooms, Kitty was sure, migrated at random around the school. Of everything, they seemed to be the most difficult for the young girl to find. She would swear that they just popped up at random and now was one of those moments. Shrugging, and deciding that they were as good anywhere to find a bit of fun Kitty opened the first door she came to, which happened to be door number 4.

Bright blue eyes widened with delight at the array of art supplies that lined the walls. She noticed an older girl painting and stepped into the room quietly, for once not wanting pester someone. No, her eyes were caught by the art supplies. Her fingers itched to explore. Quick nearly silent steps took her to one of the shelves full of supplies. Delight twined cat like though the young girl as she found a small brick of wrapped molding clay and a variety of tools for shaping it.

Completely forgetting about the other girl as thoughts and ideas began bouncing around her exited mind Kitty hopped up onto one of the stools and spread a sheet of paper down on the table before opening the package of red clay. Humming softly under her breath she began kneading it like bread dough to soften it up for shaping.

Joining you both by Samantha Hamilton

Samantha was searching for Autumn. It was always difficult to find someone in a different House, but after she hadn't found her friend in the library, Samantha thought to check the art room at MARS, one of the other places she knew Autumn liked to spend time. Due to changing taste and lifestyle, the past year had seen Samantha spend more time with Rachel Bauer, and as a consequence she hadn't spent quite so much time with Autumn. On the one hand, Samantha genuinely felt bad about this. Autumn was probably her best friend, even though the two of them weren't as close as Samantha had imagined a best friend to be. Before Sonora she hadn't really had any female friends, and the fourth year was still getting into the swing of it. Honestly, she found it easier to get along with Other Sam because she knew how to talk to him - he was easy-going - but she liked Autumn and didn't want their friendship to fall by the wayside. On the other hand, Autumn was especially studious for a Crotalus, and spent more time in the library than even Samantha did, and that was really saying something. So if Autumn was busy, too, then Samantha shouldn't be feeling guilty that they hadn't been spending so much time together as they could have.

Either way, unless Autumn was, once again, too busy to see her just at the moment, Samantha was hoping to catch up, even if for a short while. She arrived at the art room to find, to her relief, Autumn was in fact there, and painting something. Unnerved by the quiet in the room (she expected it in the library, but she would have thought there would be more noise amongst the creative types), she let the door close softly behind her as she made her way towards her fellow fourth year. "Hey, I've been looking for you," she said with a smile, noticing her own voice echoing ever so lightly. As if to make up for it, she looked to the other girl in the room, who she recognized as the first year who'd replaced her as Aladren's Keeper. "Hello," she said to the first year, not wanting to exclude her from the greeting. "It's Kitty, right?"

Autumn

Oh, hello there. by Autumn

Autumn was so involved with her painting that she didn't even notice the first year come in. That was how she was when she painted, drawn in, hyper-focused. It would take an awful lot to get her to notice, even though the fourth year was really super self-conscious the rest of the time. Usually, Autumn was extremely aware of others around her.

Which had a tendency to set her completely on edge. The Crotalus, for whatever reason, was deathly afraid of making a mistake. Autumn didn't know why she was like that. Nobody really ever put any pressure on her, her parents were loving and kind. But she was the way she was. It seemed to be just how she was wired.

But painting relieved that. It took her away from her worries, even though Autumn wanted every painting she did to be beautiful and perfect too. If someone criticized her artwork, it brought her to tears. Not in public because that would be embarrassing too, but later, when she was alone and nobody could see.

So she was pretty lost in her own world when she heard Samantha's voice. Autumn looked up, nearly spilling her paints, but fortunately avoided that calamity. She would have been slightly mortified had that happened.

The Crotalus turned around to face her friend with a genuine smile on her face. "Hi." It pleased her to here that someone had been looking for her, that someone wanted to be around her. It made Autumn feel kind of good about herself that people liked her.

Then Samantha addressed the younger girl and Autumn turned slightly pink, because she hadn't even noticed Kitty was there. "Um, hi." She echoed Samantha's greeting. How rude of her to ignore the Aladren!

Hiya! *Waves ecstatically* by Kitty

Using a small etching tool Kitty began adding small lines at the proper points to mimic the look of fur on her little howling coyote when another older girl entered the room. “Yup that’s me! Who are you?” Kitty asked with a distracted smile when the girl correctly identified her as Kitty. She put a few finishing touches on the left ear before looking up.

Painting girl apparently just noticed her, not that Kitty minded, it made her happy to know that she’d been quiet enough not to bother the girl while she worked. She gave a red handed wave (the deep red clay had coated her hands, and a large smudge was swiped half across her forehead when she’d unconsciously pushed her hair out of her eyes also leaving a few of the dark strands streaked with red).

Hopping down off the stool, one that was so high her feet didn’t come close to touching the ground Kitty half skipped over to where the other girls were standing. Bright blue eyes traced the lines and colors of the painting and Kitty gave a red thumbs up. “That’s really good! I’m terrible with flat art. Oh I’m Kitty by the way, Kitty McLevy.” Kitty said, introducing herself to the painting girl. “Do you guys know if there’s a kiln around that I could use…and um, if so can you help me? I’m not aloud to use them by myself.” Kitty said, a faint blush touching her cheeks. It was super annoying, she was 11 for goodness sake, but rules were rules, and her mother would murder her if she found out Kitty had used a kiln by herself.

I like an enthusiastic greeting by Samantha

Glad she'd gotten the first year's name right (this who's who game was getting easier by the year, Samantha found), the fifth year answered the question that had been returned. "I'm Samantha Hamilton" she told Kitty with a smile. "I was Aladren's Keeper last year." She only hoped the kid wasn't the curious type who'd ask why Samantha hadn't tried out of the position this year. It was simple: she hadn't feel like it. There weren't a lot of people who would accept an easy answer such as that at face value, but samantha had no other explanation to offer.

"And this is Autumn," she introduced the friend she'd come to see as Kitty joined her in admiring Autumn's painting. Samantha herself didn't comment - she wasn't an artist herself, by any means, but she thought that artists generally didn't like people to see their work in progress. She didn't know whether Autumn felt that way or not, but Samantha always liked her friend's pictures, even if they were just simple sketches for CoMC. For someone who couldn't draw at all (like Samantha), if a drawing even vaguely resembled its object then it was a masterpiece.

Kitty then asked about a kiln, and Samantha's unhelpful initial reaction was to shrug her shoulders. "Sorry, I have no idea." She wasn't one of these arty types, and MARS had only been opened last year, so she hadn't come to learn very much about it herself. She knew a couple of heating charms that might do the trick, but she didn't think she should try them out on Kitty's work in case the result was catastrophic.

"So yeah," Samantha said, turning back to Autumn. "I feel like I haven't seen you much outside of class this year. It's totally my fault," she added, in case Autumn got the impression Samantha was mad at her - the exact opposite was true - "so I wanted to say I'm sorry and see if you're free to, you know, hang out and catch up sometime." There really wasn't much catching up to be done in a school where very little of interest happened, but that wasn't the point.
