Late by Morning by Renée Errant

She waited with increasing impatience though she herself had only gotten there exactly two minutes ago. 'Two minutes too long!' She waited outside Room One, painfully aware that she couldn't enter without risking Sophia coming in after and not getting the same body of water that Renée got. She could feel her palms burn with desire as they settled placed against the door, one drifting down the wood paneling to grip the doorknob in earnest. "Sophia... hurry up!" She mumbled in a whine. She had sent a letter to the older girl, asking her to come and play in the water room. She was naturally independent, eager to explore and if people didn't amuse her she preferred being on her own. But Sophia was someone whose company Renée craved. There were few others who were as fun and adventurous as the Pecari. And Renée too delighted in testing her boundaries with Sophia. See how far she could get away with, and she even liked when Sophia pressed back. She didn't like, though, when the older girl was late.

"Sophia, Sophia, Sophia." She mumbled in alternating begging and hating tones. "Hurry up!" She'd been craving water all week, and would've have gone yesterday except Saturday had been unfortunately devoted to study (essays, and Divination still made little sense) but she had been determined that Sunday would be nothing but play, freedom, and water. Possibly the reason Sophia wasn't already there had to do with Renée actually only sending the letter about ten minutes ago (scribbling a quick message - Water room now please, come! - hurriedly grasping nothing but her wand and ignored the time - 3:12am - and burst out of her quiet commonroom into the early morning darkness of the school) or that she was still asleep but as this wasn't in the plan, Renée disregarded the latter and just attributed Sophia's tardiness to some vice that Renée would generously overlook and forgive.

...

She was taking forever! Renée needed the water now! She couldn't wait another five whole minutes for Sophia to come. Too much had happened; Soledad forbidding her from trying out, Charlie convincing her to try-out, and now this terrible anxiety she felt as she wondered how exactly Soledad would find out that her nieta had disobeyed her, and exactly how that following reaction would go. Land was very scary these days, and air was wrapped up in tension. Water was the only safe bet she had left. Water would doubtless calm her down. She pressed her forehead on the door, dark curls tumbling over her shoulders and darkly tanned hands gripped the doorknob, barely able to resist turning. There was a sound behind her akin to footsteps but Renée's impatient frustration deafened her from anything outside her own mind.

It is late. Period. by Sophia Randolph

Sleeping was something that Sophia Randolph liked, even relished. It was a good habit to have, your body rested and you were ready to start a new day filled with energy. One thing Sophia didn’t like was being woken up, especially during the middle of the night. It just made her cranky and not very social. So, when she was woken up from her deep slumber by an owl that gave her a letter, she wanted to smack the bird and scream in frustarion. It wasn’t any letter, it was a letter that demanded her presence at the water room at 3 am, and she wasn’t very happy about it. Was Renée crazy? Probably. Was she going to go? Most likely. Was she on a bad mood? Most definitely.

Quietly she got out of bed and changed into something more suitable, something casual: some jeans and a t-shirt. She was not going to sneak around the school in her pajamas. The Pecari managed to sneak out of her room and common room without arousing anyone. Excellent! If she was caught because of this, Renée would pay for it. It was 3 am for crying out loud, there was a fine line between being adventurous and being just plain crazy, and this was the latter. There wasn’t any good reason to be at the water room at 3 am. However, the blonde liked the thrill of it all. She had sneaked past McKindy and her roommates! This had to be a new kind of record, which made her happy. Sophia had heard a lot about some previous Pecaris and she wanted to graduate a legend. Those were big shoes to fill.

Sophia entered the water room and spotted Renée. She had a frown on her face, she was not a happy camper, she hated being out of bed at this ungodly hour. She yawned, “What is so urgent?” she stifled another yawn. The Pecari liked Renée, but there was a limit to her liking, especially if her sleep was disturbed like that. Sophia’s hands found their way to her hips. “Renée,” she poked her friend. She seemed to be completely out of this world, a trait from the younger girl that she had gotten used to. She yawned once again. Merlin, she wanted to go back to sleep, she just hoped she had been summoned for something important. Otherwise, her bad mood would just worsen and Renée would be sole recipient of it, it was her fault, after all.

Well, technically it's early. by Renée

A poke startled her and a snarl was already curling on her lips as she turned to face her attacker - "You came!" Giggles exploding from her mouth, she practically pounced on Sophia, kissing her cheek and hugging her in restored admiration, affection, enthusiasm... and then again came the impatience. "You took so long! Precious minutes, seconds, moments have been wasted so let's go!" She grasped Sophia's hand and pulled open the door, hurtling them both through and stumbling on the sand that suddenly greeted her. Letting go of Sophia, she continued her shaky descent on rocks, sand, and shells, finding herself on a downhill sandy plain. There were a few trees and she bent low to keep walking in as steady a gait as she could manage, grasping the drooping branches as she continued down. "This is new." She mumbled in growing excitement, unsure what lay beyond the curtain of bright green leaves, the sun above them clouded in early morning gray, the surroundings of this odd private little jungle she'd happily encountered.

Her hands reached out to brush away the leaves, and with a little struggle (the branches were stubborn and her legs were unsteady) she caught a glimpse of water only a few feet away. "Sophia!" She turned a little to beam at her, turn a little to say more, when her ankle twisted a little bit on the sand and she was sliding, a leaf brushing against her open mouth as she took a fall through the leafy drapes and into the lake with an eager splash. "Nnngh." She shook her head, blowing puffs of air to get the curls out of her face. The shock had a greater impact than the dull pain in parts better left unmentioned, and she turned a little on her side to comfortably look at hers and Sophia's new surroundings.

The trees around this patch of water sloped up sandy hills and rocks, creating a neat enclave around the cool water. Renée looked around in idle wonder, and then dunked her head back, unmentionables still dully throbbing, fully relaxing as the water flooded over her face. She brought herself back up, her long black nightgown Marianna had created specially for her floating on all sides (she'd not thought to appropriately dress as Sophia had done) and her hair straightened by the water. "Oh... this is bliss." She smiled and began floating, arms and legs spreading out as the lake supported her.

..good point. by Sophia

Sophia felt like she was being attacked by a wild animal, Renée pounced on her, kissing her cheeks and whatnot. She huffed; she was not in a very good mood. “Well, your owl woke me. What was I supposed to do? I couldn’t go back to sleep.” She didn’t add the fact that she curious and her sense of adventure had been teased with her invitation. She was hurdled into Room 1 just to be greeted by sand and hot weather. They were in some kind of beach. The blonde was slowly walking, she was still somewhat asleep. Suddenly she was wide awake, since Renée fell down a sandy hill.

Every vestige of a foul mood was erased by the sight of Renée stumbling down a sandy hill. The fourth-year Pecari couldn’t control the fit of laughter that escaped her, seeing Renée falling down after being such an obnoxious brat was pay enough for her. Karma. Still laughing, Sophia treaded down the sandy hill and sat down on the edge of the lake her friend was using to float away. She stifled a yawn, she was sure her yawning would be constant throughout this little adventure. The blonde liked her sleep, if she got less than 7 hours, she was usually cranky. Renée had managed to make her cranky and then get rid of her crankyness with a single action. Sophia sniggered remembering her falling down. Hilarious.

“I assume you are okay,” she rested her elbow on her knee and leaned on her palm. “Anyways, what was so important?” she folded her jeans and got her feet in the water. It was a nice temperature. That was what she loved the most about this room, the water was always the right temperature and you never knew what you would find in there. So far, she had been in a creek, a lake, the ocean, a lake and a river, and every time something new and exciting popped in. “This is nice,” she shifted her posture. Her feet where in the water and she was leaning on her arms. If she wasn’t careful, she might fall asleep. The Pecari was tired, and since she had been woken up, there was a good chance that if she was relaxed enough, she might do it. Sophia was capable of sleeping through a storm if she was tired enough. “Renée, how did you sneak past your roommates and all?” She smiled at her floating friend. There was never a dull moment with Renée Errant.

I'm very good at those. by Renée

Renée raised her head from her floating position, straining to hold it up just long enough to stick her tongue out at Sophia. "Don't make assumptions. I could have died, right then." She set her head back in the water, arms and legs spreading and closing as she moved in lazy circles around the water. She turned, soft giggles rippling the water as she watched Sophia dip her feet in. "No particular reason." She delighted in trying to irk the older girl. "Just wanted you to come." She sank easily, laughing into the water. There had been actual reasons for coming (Soledad, family, Quidditch, Charlie, womanhood, earrings, frustration, sadness, exhilaration, flight, grounding) but the water enthused her with giddiness and she was already forgetting the cause behind the need. But she did need to be there. In the water, weightless and free. Freedom was always the most important thing.

She rose to the surface again, blinking water from her eyes, and she looked with renewed irritation at Sophia who looked as if she were about to fall asleep on her. 'You call yourself a Pecari?' She began swimming toward her, though she was unable to not return the smile Sophia directed at her. "Well..." She dove beneath the water once more, curls and nightgown spreading out, her arms and legs moving in the breast stroke until she straightened and kicked up, breaking the surface, her eyes shut and grinning broadly. "I'm very sneaky."

She laughed and blindly swam a little more toward Sophia, her belly brushing the sand. She blinked as she neared Sophia, droplets of water hanging on her lashes as she looked up, grinning as she continued on until she'd slid from the water partway onto Sophia's lap, arms settling with a slight plop. "Don't go to sleep." She begged. "Let's talk about something!" She eagerly fished for a topic, fingers dancing over Sophia's leg. "My mother already sent me a letter about how she's designing me a dress for the ball." She smiled eagerly. "Do you think about it at all? I know it's a while away, but I cannot wait!" She had grown to love the music, the dancing, the color that accompanied parties and she couldn't imagine that any party at Sonora wouldn't be at least somewhat entertaining. Certainly nothing could match the magic of Spain, but Sonora would always do.

*grumbles* by Sophia

Sophia blinked at her response, getting mardier by the second. “So, you woke me up at 3 am, because you had a whim!” she almost screamed. Sophia huffed and crossed her arms, glaring from time to time at Renée. Her younger friend was smart enough to sink into the water out of her reach. She wanted to strangle her! It was just inhumane to wake someone up at this hour, just because she had the great idea of going swimming. If someone caught them, she was going to be very upset with Renée and herself for answering the invite. She sighed; it was going to be her fault, as much as it would be Renée’s. She hoped nothing happened, really. It would just suck.

The Pecari was so annoyed that she was about to get up and leave Renée to go back to sleep, when the younger girl came out of the water, and decided that her lap was the best resting place. She looked down at her, her thighs getting wet from her hair. The Blonde fourth-year just wanted to go back to sleep, and now that Renée had specified that nothing of importance was happening, she just thought about her bed. The wetness on her jeans that came from Renée’s hair was irking her. In fact, everything about her was doing that. She needed her sleep! This was not fair.

Her annoyance grew when the subject of the Ball was touched by her. Sophia shifted uncomfortably; the Ball was a topic that she didn’t like to even think about. There were so many things that could go wrong, and would go wrong. Firstly, she didn’t know how to dance, secondly, she couldn’t even afford a dress, and finally, she didn’t have a date. Three things that made the green-eyed girl dread the actual event. She thought of Andrew, but he was older, and he probably had someone to take.

“Renée, move,” she whined while gently shoving her from her lap. “You are getting me wet.” She took a deep breath, “I don’t really think about the Ball. Not really my sort of scene.” Okay, she did think about it, because she wanted to attend, but there were very important issues that were obstacles to her. Sophia wanted to dance the night away in a beautiful dress, but she didn’t have a date nor a dress. “That is nice of your mother,” she finished with a smile, even when she was still annoyed at her.

Hello there.... by Seth Brockert

Seth had roused out of his peaceful, Lilac-related dream filled sleep by an alarm. The kind that meant students were out of bed. He groaned and stretched. Seth didn't really like being woken up and not for this sort of thing. Maybe by Lilac or if the school was on fire but not catching people out of bed.

It wasn't exactly his favorite part of his job. Quite frankly, Seth would rather have been asleep at this time of night but as he was the one whose schedule was flexible, who didn't have classes to teach, he thought it was for the best that he was the one who went.

Furthermore, he hated the idea of punishing someone. Seth had been more the type of person who would have been caught out of bed. Not that he ever had been, as he'd never found that much reason to go out after curfew but he'd certainly not been a goody-two-shoes.

Seth sighed as he entered MARS, where the alarm had come from and went into the water room, spotting the two girls swimming. He sighed inwardly. He knew he was going to have to take house points and give a detention. Of course, first he was going to have to learn the names of these students and what houses they were in. "Hey girls!" Seth greeted them. "What are you doing here this time of night?"

There was very likely no good reason for them to be up. Sure, Seth knew Ryan liked to stay up late but there was no purpose for being in the water room at three in the morning. If there were a good reason, Seth would have thought of it himself years ago.

His mind ran through all possible reasons. There were medical reasons, a trip to the Hospital Wing, he knew of one such student whom might require that at some point. His cousin Charles had written to Seth, telling him about his daughter and how frail she was, asking the groundskeeper to look after her. Seth had agreed, and upon seeing the girl be sorted into Crotalus, delegated the task to Ryan.

That however, was clearly not the case here. Logic might not have been Seth's strong suit but he knew that they were out for medical reasons, they would be in the Hospital Wing, not the water room.

Nor was there some extraordinary circumstances where everyone was in iminent danger and the girls were stopping it. Seth might have been able to excuse that. But no, they were frolicking in the water. There was plenty of chance for them to do that during the day.

They weren't even a couple sneaking around, though Seth supposed they could be. Not that that would have been excusable but if that was the case, Seth would keep their secret.

Sorry, this was a private party. Invitations only. by Renée

She giggled more as she was pushed off from Sophia. "Not your scene? But I thought that you - " She broke off, watching as a man walked through the forest of leaves and entered their private section of the lake. 'Uh oh.' She stayed crouched in the water for half a second, allowing herself a little fright, and then a little anger. She was not a girl, she was a woman. Did he not see the gold hoops pressed against her cheeks, the steady development of her body, the maturity she was sure all could sense from her form? The soaking wet form that rose from the water now and caused ripples from the cascading waterfall pouring from her sagging nightgown. Heating up beneath the deep tan, she tried her best to look the older man in the eye. "We were - we were just - ah..." Her mouth continued moving while she fought to figure something clever to say, something to get her out of trouble. Pouting worked when she was younger, at school her family donated a little money and she sometimes wondered if that helped her at all. What mostly helped was that she had never gotten caught before. She was confused as to why she was getting caught now. 'Sophia must have gotten clumsy.' She pounced on that thought. Yes, it must have been Sophia. How she hated - Renée dropped the thought. She admired Sophia too much to blame her for anything but tardiness.

"Sir," she finally managed. "I wrote a note to her," her fingers vaguely twitched in Sophia's direction. "asking for her help. She thought she had to come, she was only being a good friend. Honestly, it's my fault." She took a breath, hopefully having at least gotten Sophia out of trouble. "And I went to bed on time, sir. But I couldn't sleep and no one's ever told me when curfew ended, sir. I was in bed at ten o'clock, and tried to sleep but morning came and I thought that meant I could leave then. I meant no disrespect to the school, or the rules. Sometimes people come to breakfast in the early morning, at all different times. Five or six. That's not too far from now." She bit her lip, holding back the whine that wanted to creep into her tone. Her words were genuine, dark brown eyes honest as she told what she truly believed and which made absolute sense to her. Her skin was tinged in fear of punishment, and while she knew that technically a rule was broken, she really couldn't conclude that what she had done was so terrible.

Afraid to chance a glance at Sophia (if the older girl got in trouble because of her than she was sure their friendship would be ended once and for all) she instead focused on the intruder in front of her, and the feel of the water racing the length of her legs as she stood in the shallow water, the heat of the air preventing any shivers, her dark long hair and nightgown somehow a comforting shield from the very near consequences of the future as they draped her form.

Yeah! by Sophia

Dear Merlin, the groundskeeper had caught them. Sophia just blinked up at the man, not knowing what to tell him, or how to react to the fact that they were going to be in a whole lot of trouble because of this. Renée couldn’t even finish what she was going to say, that was definitely ominous. This was the first time the younger girl was rendered speechless, even for a few seconds. The fourth-year Pecari was already imagining the Howler that her parents would send to her after they knew about this. Some righteous lecture about how she should behave at school and what would everyone think of her actions. The fourth-year couldn’t care less about what everyone thought about her, the only two people she cared about were her parents. Sophia still couldn’t find some suitable excuse to their presence in the water room at 3 am, there were no excuses that would help them get out of trouble.

Sophia opened her mouth to speak, but closed it a few seconds later. She had never been good with coming up with excuses, she was just good with breaking rules and getting away without anyone knowing. This was the first time the Blonde stayed silent for so long, and she stayed like that when Renée told the groundskeeper that it was her fault, and only hers. Sophia blinked again, part of her wanting to let Renée take all the blame, but the other part of her was screaming at her that she didn’t need to come; she had done it, because she wanted. Renée hadn’t threatened her to come and meet her. She suppressed a snigger that threatened to escape her mouth at Renée’s explanation of why they were out of bed, it was a good excuse, but she wasn’t sure Mr. Brocket would believe it, or think it was good enough to let them go.

“Sir, we are sorry.” Sophia looked up at the groundskeeper with genuine repent in her green-eyes. She couldn’t really say anything else. She looked at Renée and smiled, it was also her fault, no point in denying it. “We didn’t know we were breaking any school rules.” Okay, that was a complete lie, but her tone and expression was that of an innocent 14-year old. “We swear we won’t go wandering about at this hour,” she smiled some more to make a more lasting effect. Maybe the groundskeeper was sympathetic and would let them go with a warning.
