Head of House Lilac Brockert

As the company walked, she revealed herself to be Professor Lilac Brockert, Teppenpaw Head of House, in case they hadn’t figured it out. She also made sure to point out landmarks so that the first years could later find their way again. Being lost was never a fun experience, and she was hoping to help them avoid it as much as possible.

She stopped on the stair with the diamond-shaped chip. “Take note of this,” she said, pointing. “It’s the only indication of the Common Room. Unlike other Houses, we don’t have a password. We have a jig. Watch closely.” Her feet were quick, but not so much as usual. Lilac was being a bit more cautious and aware of the possibility of falling since it would affect more than her now if she was injured. There was currently another life for which she was responsible. She taught the dance to each of them before leading them inside.

Inside, she gestured grandly to the room was a whole. “Welcome home, ladies and gentleman.” Marcus was clearly outnumbered four-to-one, but she didn’t think he’d mind, really. Her nephew liked making friends with anyone, girl or boy. “This is where you’ll be staying for the next seven years. Up that staircase are the girls’ dormitories, up that one, the boys.” With which statement accompanied a gesture to the respective staircase. “Girls can’t go up the boys’ stairs and vice-versa, so don’t try it.”

“Over here,” she pointed, “is the bulletin boards. You can find important notices pinned to it, plus Quidditch sign-ups will be on it shortly. If you have questions about Quidditch, you can contact Captain Kirstenna Melcher or her Assistant Kate Bauer.” Lilac had a good feeling about Quidditch this year. Maybe Teppenpaw would take home the trophy.

“This door leads to my office,” she added. “You can find me in there almost any time if you have questions or just need to talk. You can also talk to your Prefects, Kate Bauer, Jane Carey, and Dulce Garcia.” She hoped students would take her up on that offer if necessary; Lilac wanted to help them feel as comfortable and safe at Sonora as possible.

“Curfew is at ten. Please note that I will issue detentions and take points from my own House if necessary.” Lilac still hadn’t gotten very good at that whole discipline thing, but she figured she needed to improve that over the next eight months. “If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask now.”

Aubrielle Thornton

Once everyone was done eating, Heads of Houses started calling their first years to them. Brielle looked at the other first years of Teppenpaw and turned to the woman she assumed had been Lilac Crosby, now Brockert that her oldest sisters had been talking about for the last few years. Aubrielle smiled to Arista and Addison and walked towards Lilac. She was the first of the first years to make their way to their new Head of House. It felt good to be bold again.

When the others had joined her, Lilac asked them if they were ready to see their new home. “Sure am!” Aubrielle said happily to her as she walked almost by her side as they left Cascade Hall. As they walked, she introduced herself and Brielle walked with her, watching for the landmarks that were pointed out and when Professor Brockert stopped on a stair with a diamond shaped chip on it, Brielle wondered what was so important about that step. It didn’t take but a moment more for Lilac to explain why it was important and Brielle’s eyes opened wide like saucers. It’s just like finding your mark on stage… I’m just going to be finding my mark… she thought to herself as Lilac told them they didn’t have a password, but a jig instead. “Dance? We get to dance to go into our dorms?” she asked, mouth opening into a wide smile. Brielle watched her steps and copied them almost right away. Her dancing skills hadn’t been the best, but they also weren’t the worst. Once each of the five first years had gotten the jig down, Lilac led them inside, gesturing grandly to the Commons. “WOW!” Brielle exclaimed as she looked around the large room. Lilac explained which way the girls rooms were and which the boys were to go and that they couldn’t go up the other gender’s steps. Then they were shown the bulletin boards and who to talk to about Quidditch, where to find Lilac herself if they needed her, who the prefects were as well. Then they were told about curfew and that if there were questions they should ask.

The red-headed first year was the fifth Thornton to arrive at Sonora and was sure of one thing. If her sisters liked Lilac, she would too. As for questions, she really didn’t have too many that she could think of off the top of her head, but she did have one that could be big in her mind.

“Uhm, Professor Brockert?” she started, raising her hand to show the young woman in front of them that she had a question. “My name is Aubrielle Thornton and I wanted to know how often we got to see the older kids or the other houses?” she asked, looking to Lilac, making a mental note to go talk to her after the little meeting to introduce herself better.

A hand went up, to be followed by a question. It belonged to a red-haired first year who Lilac could only assume to be the Thorton girl most recent to join Sonora. The family was rather huge, with over a dozen children, the oldest of whom was a fifth year. She could only imagine the hustle and bustle of that household, especially around holidays. Considering how much—albeit playful—complaining she had heard from her father about raising four children who were nine years apart, how the Thortons managed was a mystery to her.

The recently-deemed Teppenpaw stated her name before her question, proving the professor to be correct. Aubrielle: she would commit that to memory. At some point, if records were any indication, she figured the girl would end up at her office door. Lilac didn’t mind—it was her obligation to be available to whoever needed her and for whatever—but it seemed rather inevitable. She just hoped she could be as available as previous terms. Impossible? Probably, but she wanted to try.

Aubrielle asked how often they would encounter their elder Housemates and other schoolmates. “Well,” the brown-haired thirty year old answered a moment of thought. “Your classes will consist of first- and second-year students for the time being, and Houses have no bearing in lessons. Also, you’re welcome to go anywhere, excluding other Common Rooms, during your free time. You could spend time with upper-level, non-Teppenpaw students then.” She hoped she was thorough. To the group as a whole, she added ,“Anything else, anyone?”

Brielle

Aubrielle had asked her question and then sat down to wait to see what the answer would be. She knew that her two oldest sisters were in her house at least, though they weren’t going to be in her classes. Amira wouldn’t be in any of her classes, nor would she be in her house. Andri and Clara, however, would be in her classes but not her house. Brielle wasn’t sure how to feel about it all but she was reassured by Lilac’s answer.

The fact that she knew she’d see Arista and Addi here in Teppenpaw, Andri and Clara in classes and all four of them plus Amira in Cascade Hall and around the school she felt much better about it all. “Thanks.” she said to Professor Brockert.

“Anything else, anyone?” Lilac asked to the others. Brielle glanced around her and wondered if anyone else would have any other questions. As she looked around her she spotted her shoestrings untied and bent down to tie them. Once she finished the strawberry-blonde-ish red headed girl smiled up at Lilac and wondered what she should say to the woman who had made her sisters’ time there at Sonora so much better.

There was something about her new Head of House that helped her to feel comfortable. She wasn’t sure what it was, but as she looked the woman up and down she figured it out. She was glowing. She was glowing like her own mother did quite often.

Like her mother did when she was pregnant.

Can it be? she thought as she wondered if anyone else would say anything.
