Haicuts in the music room, what?! by Demelza Eagle

As usual, Demelza was in room five on a Sunday morning. She had just finished a Boston Crème doughnut in the Cascade Hall and then immediately made her way into MARS. The Pecari absolutely loved the place; she could play her guitar, practice Quidditch, and converse with new people, all things she made a hobby out of. She spent far more time in this room than in the Library and her common room put together. During the week days, after she spent hours practicing Quidditch, she made her way back into the room to practice some more. On Friday and Saturday nights she just chilled by the pool, and on Sunday mornings she got funky on her guitar.

It was a rather expected skill, she supposed, for a tough tomboy like herself. Playing some hardcore rock shouldn’t be too surprising to most people who knew what she was like. However, when she sung, it was a completely different story. The loud, obnoxious beater had a soft and gentle alto voice, but she could also hit high soprano notes if she wanted to. Last year at the talent show she had sung Blowin’ in the Wind by Bob Dylan, which showed that she actually did have a soft side. Her voice was smooth and clear then, and although she didn’t win, she felt like she did a good job. Even her close friends didn’t know that Demelza had a soft side; she hadn’t even had a relationship before and she was already fifteen. When her cousin Paul constantly asked her about what guy she liked, she merely shrugged and ignored him. Mel didn’t have time for relationships when she had a career she needed to train for. Plus, she preferred girls to guys anyway.

This Sunday she was in a pleasant mood, happy that she just received a letter from Kat explaining everything that was going on in her school. She giggled when she read about Paul being a show-off pain-in-the butt. Kat was an incredibly critical person, but her judgments were often right. Although the two sisters often fought verbally, they loved each other and Mel wished that they could attend the same school. She missed all of her 10 siblings over the course of the school year. She thought about them as she absentmindedly strummed on her six metal guitar strings with her left thumb.

She ran a hand through her hand and sighed, thinking about what she should play. Her hand got caught in a knot, and she got frustrated as she tried to untangle it. Her chocolate brown hair had gotten so long that it was a rare occasion when it didn’t tangle! The third youngest Eagle needed a haircut badly. She was almost tempted to just cut it herself, or get someone else to. Ripping her right hand loose from her ridiculously long hair, she then placed it on the neck of her left-handed guitar, put her middle finger on the top E string, third fret, and began the finger picking for a Beatles song, Blackbird. She had only just learned the tune from tabs Paul had sent her, and it was absolutely beautiful. After the intro she began singing in a soft but supportive voice, “Blackbird singing in the dead of night.” However, she couldn’t remember where her fingers went after B string, twelfth fret, and A string, tenth fret. She stopped singing, shrugged, and instead placed her fingers in the G chord formation and began strumming the chorus to Mrs. Robinson, a much more bouncy song. In the mood, she stood up and started dancing along to her singing and playing, not caring at all if someone walked in on her, which was exactly what happened.

“Oh! Hey! Sorry! Do you wanna use the room? We can play together,” The green eyed girl rambled, as she always did. The girl did not know how to hold a conversation where she only said one sentence at a time in a normally-paced voice. She grinned welcomingly at the incomer, hopeful that they would want to play with her. She was so happy that her father, a wandmaker, had donated money for the construction of this room. It was perfect for Mel, as if it was designed specifically for her. She began taking her guitar off by lifting it over her head, but as her hair got stuck in the strap, that was the final straw.

“Ugh! Or, you can help me cut my hair, I supposed,” she said, clearly identifying in her tone of voice that she wasn’t joking. When she finally got her guitar off she reached for her pocket where she kept a pocket knife that was given to her by her brother Jamie when she was nine. She kept it with her at all times. Flicking out the blade, she grinned at the person who walked in and said, “Well, do you want to help me out? I can’t stand how long it is anymore.” She didn’t even think about it being sad if she lost her precious hair—it had to go!

That sounds about right. by Starbuck Gregory

Starbuck Gregory was bored and had yet to explore any of the Mars rooms. She had been busy with Quidditch and school work. Not only was all that time consuming but Star was also taking a couple of Muggle courses by mail. Today though it seemed like she was caught up on all her work and decided she needed to explore the MARS rooms. As she got dressed for the day in cargo shorts, and a black tank top she noticed Mel was already out of bed. She shoved her feet into her DC shoes before heading down to Cascade Hall. There she enjoyed a nice stack of pancakes before heading up to the MARs room.

There were five rooms and Star decided to explore the rooms backwards, starting with the fifth one. She had just opened the door to see none other than Mel singing and dancing to some old song. She must have noticed Starbuck because she said. “Oh! Hey! Sorry! Do you wanna use the room? We can play together, Ugh! Or, you can help me cut my hair, I supposed,”

Starbuck couldn’t help but chuckle as Mel flicked out the blade, wondering if Mel was going to take a swipe at her. “Well do you want to help me out? I can’t stand how long it is anymore.”

Finally seeing a lull in the conversation from Mel Starbuck took the chance to answer all her questions. “No I don’t wanna use the room, I’m just exploring them. I didn’t know this was the music one.” She answered and smiled as she moved towards Mel. “But I can understand wanting to get rid of the long hair. So I can help you cut it!” She offered with a smile. Starbuck herself had once long red hair but this summer she had chopped it off into a pixie style and loved the change.

Welp, let's get-er-done! by Demelza Eagle

Mel grinned even wider when she realized that she was talking to her roommate, Starbuck. Although she wasn’t terribly close to the girl like she was with Jude and Delilah, she still was rather fond of her. They player Quidditch together, and anyone who played Quidditch on her team was definitely considered her friend. She was slightly surprised that Starbuck answered all her questions (most of the time people disregarded half of them), as well as grateful. People didn’t listen to her too often because they thought she was rather obnoxious, which in many senses was kind of true. However, that never brought Mel down.

Withdrawing a blue hair band from her jean pocket, she made a low ponytail about ten inches above the bottom of her hair. Her hair was long enough so that she could sweep her hair over her shoulder even while it was in a ponytail, easily. Jokingly, she jabbed the air around her with her knife, pointing at Star, and then held it up and inch above where the band tied into her hair. Then, without warning, she started tearing up and put the knife down. Feeling stupid, she blinked back the tears and suddenly felt very conscience of Starbuck being there.

“S-Sorry,” she said, regaining her cool, “It’s stupid, y’know, but… I’ve been growing it for so long! You do it for me!” Mel felt seriously stupid, but for some reason her emotions just started running high, and she felt that she would miss her long hair. She had been growing it ever since the accident, so in actuality, she didn’t know what it would be like or look to be missing that big chunk of hair. Feeling somewhat defenseless, she handed over her pocket knife to Starbuck and then held her hair out.

“Just get it out of the way,” she said with a bit of urgency. Bending down, as she was taller than most girls at 5’10”, she let her hair be in easy reach for Star. She smelled Starbuck as she got closer to her and smiled, thinking that she smelled nice. The green-eyed girl bit her lip and closed her eyes, excited to see how she would look after she got her hair cut. She would probably have to fix it later to get any little extra stands that didn’t get chopped off by the knife, but she now she just wanted it all out of the way. She waited on baited breath for Starbuck to get the job done.

And here we go!! by Starbuck

When Mel began to tear up Starbuck wanted to hug her. “It’s not stupid, I cried when I chopped mine off, but I’ll tell you everything is so much easier without all that heavy hair holding you back.” Starbuck said as she patted Mel’s shoulder. As she gripped the pocket knife she smiled. “You know a cutting charm would be better.” She said as he handed back over the knife and pulled out her wand. She knew that the girl was waiting for her to get the cutting over with but Starbuck liked how close they were. If she wanted she could kiss Mel. ‘Stop it Starry, Mel’s not like you. She chided herself.

The redhead girl had only done the charm once but it had worked well enough. She smiled as she held the hair tightly and pulled her wand across the ponytail as she said, “Perseco.” Within seconds the hair was detatched. “Ta-da!” Starbuck said with a smile. She stepped back to admire her word and she couldn’t help but think how good Mel looked.

Mel had looked good before, but now she looked awesome. Maybe it was because the short hair made her roommate look less like her ex-girlfriend Farrah. “How’s it feel Mel?” She asked as she ran a hand through her hair wrecking her own short hair cut. She hoped that she liked it or else Starbuck would forever be known as the girl who ruined Mel’s hair.
