Girl Talk [Tag: Lexi] by Dalila Bastet

[OOC: Sorry this took so long. I had written this twice and each time my computer shut off "for updates" as I was writing it]

BIC:
Bright shafts of lights stretched across the ceiling, catching Dalila's eyes as she lay face up on her bed, clutching her pillow and waiting for Lexi to get back from wherever she had gone. Dalila needed to talk to her best friend. This was one of the many times she was incredibly glad that she shared a room with her best friend and no one else.

Earlier that day, she and Lexi had gone to their first Quidditch practice of the year. It was a fairly normal first practice to the untrained eye, but a couple aspects made Dalila uneasy, resulting in her need for Lexi's advice.

Dalila had been absolutely sure that her crush had evaporated as soon as Adam came into her life. She hadn't thought of Jake as anything more than a friend in almost two years and now that Adam is gone, just a few compliments and a one-armed hug and she goes goofy.

Just as Dalila was starting to wonder where in the world Lexi had gone for so long, the door to their room opened. Dalila sat up and tossed the pillow aside.

"Lex! Good, you're back! I need your help with something." Dalila waited for Lexi to make herself comfortable before grabbing her pillow again and sitting cross-legged on her bed. Dalila took a deep breath, trying to figure out how to start.

"Today..." Dalila started and then stopped. "Is it possible to like someone, then stop and then start liking them again?" Dalila finally got out, realizing how stupid it sounded as she said it.

No good can come of this by Lexi

Quidditch practice, for the first time, had been almost a letdown for Lexi. Not that it hadn’t been enjoyable; it always was. But it hadn’t given her the same kind of satisfaction of work well done and time well spent that it usually did. Maybe it wasn’t quidditch though, maybe it was just her. That same feeling of half-satisfying at best seemed to be filling her, no matter what the activity was. She’d assumed it had just been the end of summer, but it had yet to stop. Honestly, she had never thought a sense of un-accomplishment or boredom could be this encompassing.

So after practice she’d decided to go running, just to see if it was just not enough exercise that was causing this feeling. And, after a little over an hour of working out (the running had progressed to other things), she did. Mostly. Sort of.

She wasn’t expecting an immediate hailing from her roommate as soon as she walked in the door, though. About to beg off on the grounds of being disgustingly sweaty, she was stopped by Dalila’s appearance. Her best friend had never been able to hide her emotions well. So she sat down on the edge of her bed, pulling out a brush and trying to tame her hair.

The question made everything clearer. Naturally, this mood was about Jake. Lexi wasn’t particularly surprised; neither of them seemed to have any luck at getting away from certain feelings for certain completely inappropriate boys. Though, all things considered, Dalila had a better chance than Lexi. She sighed, put the brush down, and then sank down onto the bed more fully. “Definitely, which I’m sure you already knew. Matters with regards to boys are never clear-cut, trust me on this one.” There was no need to go into any further detail; Dalila had already lectured her enough on the folly of romantically entangling herself with Chris, even by being interested. Normally here would be the interjection that she wasn’t anymore, but after that Defense Against the Dark Arts, she couldn’t say it, even to herself, convincingly enough. One wasn’t supposed to want to be kissed by guys one wasn’t interested in in the slightest, after all. Still, her problems were easily resolved by staying the hell away from the oh-so-confusing male. There here and now were Dalila’s. “So, what are you going to do about it this time?”

It never does. by Dalila

A sigh escaped Dalila's lips as Lexi pointed out what Dalila already knew. Of course she knew it. She had just grasped onto the hope that Lexi might contradict it. Alas, it wasn't to be. "I trust you," Dalila said with a wry smile and a downcast tone.

"I have no idea what I'm going to do," Dalila said, a bit more exasperatedly. "I just can't believe that even after all this time, I'm still not over him. I've tried thinking about other guys, and you can see how well that worked out. I can't just stay away from him because we have Quidditch together. And he has a girlfriend, so telling him is completely out of the question." Dalila stopped talking and bit her lip.

"So basically I have no idea what I'm going to do. You wouldn't have any ideas for me, would you?"

But, hey, we have fun by Lexi

As bad as she felt for her friend, Lexi did appreciate knowing that some things apparently didn’t change at Sonora, like Dalila’s occasionally hopeless-seeming infatuation with their quidditch captain. It added a level of consistency to everyday life. Still, several years was definitely too long to sit back and do nothing (even if there was a break in there somewhere).

“If you ask me,” she began hesitantly, biting her lip as well, “Well, honestly, it’s getting close to the point of ‘what have you got to lose?’ If it’s been going on for this long, it’s not going to go away, not likely at least. It’s not going to go away just because you keep pushing at it, since that hasn’t worked yet. I think…” reaching back into her memory, she remembered something interesting that she’d noticed about Jake and the before-mentioned girlfriend.

“You know, Dalila, Jake and Jennifer haven’t been together all that much lately, not that I’ve seen. At least not in public. They didn’t sit together at the opening feast a few weeks ago, which you’d expect a couple to do, and from what I’ve noticed she seems to be pretty much cooped up in the library 24/7. I think,” here was a pause, because she wasn’t sure, and she didn’t want to give her roommate horrible advice, but at the same time some things had to be done to get Dalila out of the rut.

“I think you shouldn’t worry about the girlfriend situation, because they might have broken up, or they might be growing apart, or something. And even if they’re not, I think you should still make a move. Girlfriends aren’t like mountains, they can be moved. And Jake’s definitely more touchy-feely and flirtatious with you than he is with, for example, me, so I think you should have some potential. I think you should go for it.” She shrugged with a self-deprecating chuckle. “Though, after all, I’m not known for my skill in this area.”

Fun, and then some. by Dalila

Dalila was expecting more lectures on falling for boys she couldn't have or maybe some sympathy. What she wasn't expecting was information on Jake possibly being single and Lexi cheering her on. Her mouth dropped open out of shock, but she quickly closed it as a blush crept to her cheeks. Was he really that much more 'touchy-feely and flirtatious' with her than with anyone else?

"Really?" Dalila asked, finally getting her voice back. "You think they might've broken up?" Dalila sat back and stared blankly at a spot on the wall in front of her. Jake and Jennifer had been together for as long as Dalila could remember. Even longer, since it was Lexi that had to inform her of it.

"Go for it..." Dalila said softly to herself, reiterating what Lexi had said. "But what if he doesn't feel the same way?"

We should both be locked up, I think by Lexi

"But what if he doesn't feel the same way?"

“Then you know,” was the only response Lexi could make, though to her mind it was enough. “Then you know for sure, and then it’s over. While it might hurt, surely it would be more painful just to wait patiently for him to make a move, yea or nay. Surely it’s better not to watch, and wonder, and think ‘is this all just me?’ while you hope that it isn’t, with no way of knowing. Surely it’s better to be able to ask, and have everything be simple and uncomplicated, instead of everything coming to a sudden, abrupt stop, but not even a dignified and total one, just an indefinite hold. If you ask him, and he doesn’t feel the same way, then it should be easier to give things up and move on, because you know there’s no begging, not when it’s him who’s vetoed everything, because you have to have your pride, Dalila, that’s one of the most important things. Because otherwise, it’s not worth it. But in order to know, you have to ask.”

Her tempo had grown faster and faster as her speech went on, finally getting to the point where she had to take several deep breaths after she stopped, and there was a wetness around her eyes that might have been tears. She wasn’t sure where she’d stopped talking about her best friend and more about herself, and she supposed it didn’t matter. It was ridiculous and disgusting, that just the thought of a complicated situation would bring her from a…well, if not happy, then at least not depressed state to this mess. “You want to ask,” she finished once she’d finally gotten herself under control, wiping her eyes quickly, “so that you don’t end up like me; still having feelings for someone who’s let you go, no matter how you try to move on, while you wait to watch him do the same, knowing it’s not over until he has.”

She paused. “God, Dalila, what’s the matter with me? It’s been six months, more, really, since the original break-up. I should be long over him by now. What...what the hell am I not doing?” There was a slightly hysterical giggle. “Sorry for stealing your moment of uncertainty there.”

For the good of humanity by Dalila Bastet

A lifted eyebrow was the only outward sign that Dalila had noticed the slight change in demeanor that she had noticed in Lexi as the redhead spoke. Somehow Dalila didn't think Lexi was referring to her ordeal with Jake anymore. The eyebrows went from one extreme to another when Lexi wiped her eyes before continuing. She slowly moved from her bed to sit next to Lexi.

"There's nothing wrong with you, Lex. Everyone has their own messed up problems and I doubt you still having feelings for Chris ranks very high on the cosmic scale. Nor, actually, does my problem," Dalila added with a thoughtful pause.

"It's not your fault. Things just happen. Or you can do what I tried to do and find another guy to take your mind off him. Although that got me nowhere." Dalila said with a sad smile.

"And by the way, you could never steal my moment of uncertainty." Dalila's grin grew slightly larger.
