First Year Girls! (Ignore other post!) by Gwyneth Aquillon

What Gwyneth was feeling when she walked into the first year girls' room was indescribable! Excitement, joy, fear, and nausea were all vying for top billing. She quickly found the bed where her boxes, bags and belongings had been deposited and started unpacking. With quiet efficiancy she quickly put her belongings away in the cupboard, dresser and desk closest to "her" bed.

She looked around the room and realized that the girls here were most likely going to be her roommates for the next several years. She was a relatively easy-going personality herself and hoped that most of the others were the same. Her family was quiet and reserved, except for her younger sister who was dramatic, funny and constantly craving the spotlight. While she was used to sharing a room with her sister, suddenly sharing with strangers was a bit . . . well, odd. For a few minutes she really wished she was back home, getting ready to start back at her old school, rather than here - - alone in a room full of strangers.\n\n

*jumps up and down* No, not really, but is here by Hannah Laurent

When Hannah walked into her new room, another girl, presumably her dormmate, was already there. It looked like she had just finish unpacking as one of the desks appeared to be claimed. She wondered what this person was like. Was she nice? Would they be friends? Or horribly, would she have an enemy for the next seven years?

Hannah, you need to think positively, she thought.

Her hand automatically went to the charm bracelet her family had given her as a congratulatory gift for being accepted to Sonora. She could feel her heart aching with longing to be back home in Louisiana, to be with her family, especially Addie.

Quietly, she headed to the bed where her things had been placed. Nearby, was the empty carrier. Hannah got down on her hands and knees and checked under the bed for her calico kitten, Abby. There she was with wide yellow eyes tinted with bits of blue staring back at her. Gently, she pulled the fluff ball out and set her on the bed. She stroked the soft fur to calm Abby as well as herself, as she did so, she kept glancing over at the other girl, trying to figure out how to go about introducing herself.

Back at home, introductions were never an issue, because everyone knew everyone else since one practically grew up together. All of her friends were as close as family and they just called each other 'cousin.'

Before she could introduce herself, however, Abby, now calmed, decided to do it for her. The kitten jumped off the bed and ran over to the other girl and started rubbing against her legs and circling around them.

Hannah tentatively followed and said to the girl, "Sorry about that. Her name is Abby and I'm Hannah."\n\n

*reaches down to pet the cat* by Gwyneth Aquillon

Gwyneth looked up as the other first year girls started unpacking their things and settling in. Well, this is it, she thought. She looked down in surprise as she felt a familiar sensation. Another girl's cat had escaped her arms and was weaving itself around Gwyneth's ankles. The girl, who introduced herself as Hannah and the cat as Abby, came over to apologize.

"Not a problem. Abby probably smells my cat. I have an orange tabby at home, named Cat. Yeah, not too original a name," Gwyneth laughed at the memory. "But when we got Cat my little sister was only three and Mom and Dad allowed her to choose what we would call her. I'm Gwyneth, Gwyneth Aquillon, by the way. Nice to meet you, Hannah."

"I didn't know we could bring pets along to school," she continued, wanting to prolong the conversation and try to get to know her fellow student. "It will be nice to have Abby here. She is so pretty. You don't see many calicos."

Gwyneth noticed the charm bracelet Hannah was wearing. "That's a really nice charm bracelet you have, Hannah. I don't see many girls back home who wear one. The only other one I've really seen is one my mother wears. Was it a gift for your birthday or something?"\n\n

huzzah! by Meri

When Meri finally collected her wits and tore herself away from the comfortable fireplace scene, it was time to see her room. She walked slowly through the corridor, taking in her surroundings with a quiet happiness. She thought of the muggle saying, "Home is where the heart is," only with the welcoming sight of the common room fireplace, she mentally revised the statement to say, "Home is where the hearth is." She was smiling and feeling rather pleased when she stepped into the room and saw two girls and a rather adorable cat.

She looked around the room, and saw her belongings stacked by a bed. The bed had a thick, plush curtain that enclosed it. She knew she'd be using that curtain when she stayed up late reading another novel, and didn't want her reading light to disturb anyone else in the room. To her delight, there was also a window by her bed.

She was about to rush forward when she suddenly felt a familiar sensation. She struggled to resist it, but a very loud, very unlady-like "aaaaaaaah-CHOOO!" burst from her lips, followed by 3 more, very pronounced sneezes.

She stopped in her tracks, as embarrassed as she'd been when she had accidentally set a visiting wizard's robes on fire in front of her astonished (and very angry) parents.

She gritted her teeth against another sneeze. A moment passed. When she spoke, it was very carefully, as if she was speaking AROUND her nose. "I'm so very sorry," she half-whispered. "I'm allergic to so many things...now that I'm here, maybe I can find a charm against sneezing." Her hands fluttered uncertainly as she looked at both girls beseechingly. \n\n

Gesundheit (sp?) by Gwyneth

Gwyneth looked up from her conversation with Hannah, startled by the three very loud sneezes. She quickly saw her friend Meri with her hand to her face, seemingly trying to stifle another round of sneezes! As Meri said something about being allergic to lots of things, Gwyneth quickly passed a couple of tissues to her friend. "Are you okay? Guess maybe we can include allergies to cats, hunh?" Then she said braceingly, "There's bound to be a charm or potion or something here that can help. Heck, it's like being in OZ, all we need to do is ask the wizard, right?"

"Thanks for offering to help me with that crazy dance we have to learn. I am really no good at dances, two left feet so to speak. I. . . I was rude not to thank you downstairs. I shouldn't have been in such a hurry to see the room." Gwyneth hung her head and said sadly, "I didn't mean to ditch you downstairs. But,you looked like you wanted to curl up in front of that fireplace with a good book!"

"Oh, Meri, this is Hannah and her cat, Abby. Hannah and Abby, this is my friend Meri. We met at the feast when she made a space for me at the table." Gwyneth surprised herself by making the introductions. Usually she was much to shy. Maybe there is magic here if I can get over some of my shyness, she thought. She hoped having Abby in the room wasn't going to cause any problems between Meri and Hannah.

Jumping up here by Hannah Laurent

OCC: I'll just jump up to this part of the thread, so we don't have a thread tree. ~^^~

BIC:

Hannah smiled genuinely at Gwyneth, before another girl entered the room and almost immediately began to sneeze. She looked at the other girl with concern. It must be awful to have allergies. She turned her head when Gwyneth suggested that it might be due to cats. That would be simply awful in Hannah's opinion, but the letter had said that pets, such as cats, were acceptable.

While introductions were being made, she came up with an idea. The school must have encountered this before. They wouldn't just blindly allow them to bring pets, if there were going to be so many problems.

Once Gwyneth finished, Hannah smiled at the girl. She was going to have to room with Meri for the next seven years and she was not about to give up Abby. They would just have to find some sort of compromise.

"Nice to meet you, Meri. I'm sure that there is something that you can take. Afterall, I'm sure that the school has taken proper provisions for this sort of thing," Hannah responded, in almost a Dupree way.

Afterall, she was related to them, even if they didn't acknowledge it. She was there half-blood cousin, Dupree through her mother's side. Most of the time, she was more like the easy-going Laurent side, but not when her poor cat was in danger of being separated from her.

Hannah continued, trying to be more kind to Meri, since it wasn't her fault that she had allergies, "At the feast, I met Adam. He pointed out his sister, Kaylie, to me, who is our prefect. We can go talk to her."\n\n

my thanks too ^_^ by Meri

At Hannah's calm and positive words, Meri felt her shoulders slump with relief. She kept one hand poised near her face, though, glad that she had a charmed handkerchief which was self-cleaning...something she needed often. Her words were muffled when she spoke.

"Sorry... I absolutely love cats..." She gulped, and looked stricken. "But cats, along with plants, don't like ME!" She seemed to sense some apprehension in the two girls' faces, and hastened to reassure them. "Really, don't worry about me. I'd love a cat around... ahhhh... ahhhh...."

She turned her head swiftly and let out a quieter sneeze.

"However," she added, with a sniffle as she turned back to them, "If there IS a charm or remedy for these dratted sneezes, I'd be FOREVER grateful!"

Mentally, she was cursing her allergies. How would she ever make friends if she kept sneezing on them? Bad, bad manners, she admonished herself. She MUST get rid of her sneezing. That was her first priority! Even more than finding a way out of flying, or good grades. \n\n

Looking for Prefect Kaylie by Gwyneth

Gwyneth completely understood how her friend felt, or at least she thought she did. She was relieved that this situation with Meri's allergies and Hannah's cat didn't seem to put a damper on a possible friendship between the three girls. She was glad that Hannah had the good sense to suggest finding their house prefect, Kaylie. Surely if anyone would know a possible solution, Kaylie would be the one to go to.

She pulled out a ponytail holder and began pulling her shoulder length auburn hair back in a very business-like manner. That accomplished, she stood up and announced, "Come on, ladies. We have a prefect to search for," she said in a very determined tone. "I know she came back with us and Professor Chattejee from the feast. Wonder if she is still in the Common Room?" she mused.

Fitting action to words, Gwyneth walked out of the first year girls' dormitory in search of Prefect Kaylie and a solution to her friends' problem.\n\n

paging prefect ^_^ by Meri

Meri watched Gwyneth take on the air of assurance as she decided for them. She gaped, first at Gwyneth, then at Hannah, for the moment lost for words. A giggle that was half-sneeze bubbled up in her, and she shook her head as she dabbed at her nose with her handkerchief.

"Th-thank you!" she managed through her absurd giggles. Who ever knew that her allergies might help her make friends? And here were two girls already helping her! She wished fervently that they WOULD find a cure. She didn't mind skipping botany and magical plants, truly, but being allergic to a roommate's cat was simply unthinkable. She straighted up with one last wheeze and exchanged an amused glance with Hannah, one that was also full of gratitude.

"Shall we follow the leader then?" she said, moving to follow Gywneth. "And... where would we find the prefect anyway?" she mused out loud. After all, she wasn't at all familiar with the school grounds yet.\n\n

If you're unable to track down our prefect, remember that there are other places to go: my office for one, or the Hospital Wing, as Doctor Wolfe would certainly know of something to at least alleviate the symptoms, if not cure the allergy completely. \n\n

Kaylie Brockert

December 16, 2006 7:31 PM

Here I am! by Kaylie Brockert

After the first years had dispersed, Kaylie had gone to her room to put on her pajamas. She'd returned to the common room just in case anyone needed her. She hadn't wanted people coming in to talk to her to bother Tally and besides, the boys wouldn't have access then if they needed anything.

She settled back into her chair, a smile on her face. Kaylie was so happy. Everything was going so well. She had a great boyfriend and now she was even being trusted as prefect. Maybe that proved she wasn't such an airhead the way she assumed everyone thought.

The one thing that worried Kaylie, of course, was Adam. Her brother seemed so down. She was pretty sure it had to do with her and Chris. He probably felt Kaylie was going to abandon him completely, though she certainly would never do that. It was just that she wanted to spend time with Chris too. He was a very special important person in her life, if not the most important.

She felt a bit guilty for feeling that way, like she was betraying Adam a bit, but it was only natural that as she grew up she was going to become more interested in a relationship. It was just that Kaylie knew how hard it was for Adam. She was sure he'd understand someday how she felt about Chris when he fell in love with someone.

Now there was an idea! Adam needed a girlfriend. Maybe Kaylie could help him. Or at least help him make friends.

She shook these thoughts from her mind as a girl she identified as one of the new first years came into the room. Kaylie gave the girl a wide smile. "Hey there, do you need anything?" She wasn't sure the girl did. Kaylie just wanted them all to know that she was nearly always available.

Search Successful!! by Gwyneth Aquillon

Gwyneth led the way back to the Common Room. It seemed the most obvious place to start looking for Kaylie. She didn't want to go up to the older girl's room and disturb her if she was catching up with her own friends, so she really hoped that the Prefect would be available for a little while longer in the main lounge. She was relieved to see Kaylie snuggled into one of the chairs there. But Kaylie looked lost in thought as Gwyneth first entered the room. Gwyneth faltered a little, not wishing to disturb the Prefect's thoughts. She had been all confidence back in the first years' room that Kaylie would be the person with the answer to their problem. After all, she was the Prefect, so even though Gwyneth didn't exactly know what a prefect's job entailed, she assumed that it must have been like an assistant to Professor Chatterjee. After all, Kaylie was a fourth year student and was bound to know tons of magical stuff, wasn't she?

She had even surprised herself with her take charge attitude. Now, her true nature was re-emerging and Gwyneth was suddenly shy and not sure how to bring up the problem with Kaylie. But she just couldn't let her friends down! 'So get over yourself and just go talk to her already,' she thought sternly to herself when she slowed her approach toward the occupied chair. Kaylie's smile and "Hey there, do you need anything?" melted the last of Gwyneth's reservations away.

"Yes, at least I hope you can give me, us, some advice," she began. It all came out in a rush. "You see, we, my new friends and I, have a problem. Well, I guess I don't have a problem but my friends do so that sorta makes it my problem, too, doesn't it? Anyway, my friend Hannah brought her cat Abbey with her to school; Abbey is just the cutest thing and so sweet; but it turns out that my other friend Meri is sneezing almost non-stop, practically sneezing her head off 'cause she has allergies, to lots of things it turns out, including cats; Meri wants to be able to stop sneezing 'cause she doesn't want there to be a problem in our room with Hannah and Abbey but she really can't go on sneezing everytime she comes into the room." Gwyneth groaned at her awkward summary of their problem, so she took a deep breath and gathered her thoughts then said more slowly, "So we were wondering if you knew a spell or charm or something that would help Meri's allergies so she could stop sneezing and Abbey could stay and my friends can all be happy?" Gwyneth looked at Kaylie with eyes full of hope that the Prefect would have a solution to the problem.\n\n

thank goodness! :) by Meri

Meri followed meekly behind Gwyneth. One finger tugged anxiously at a strand of her mousy hair, and almost as if to match the expression, her nose wiggled, trying to stave off another sneeze. She was so focused on NOT sneezing, that she almost bumped into Gwyneth's back as the girl paused just inside the commons. Leaning forward, she peered over Gwyneth's shoulder at an older girl, reclining in a comfy spot.

She smiled and advanced toward the person who was obviously Kaylie, as Gwyneth blurted out their dilemna. She waited for the flow of words to stop, then nodded.

"I'm also allergic to almost all plants," she said, very apologetically. "And ALMOST allergic to flying!" She smiled, tentatively, "You wouldn't happen to have a book of cures and almost-cures, would you?" Her nose wiggled again, almost of its own volition, but she took a deep breath. At least there was no fur and no green plants in this room, she thought. Just a warm fire, comfy chairs and tables, and friendly people. \n\n

Now, we can figure out what to do by Hannah

Hannah followed behind Meri and Gwyneth to reach the prefect. She knew her by sight, because she had been sitting with one of her other new friends, Adam, Kaylie's younger brother. She gently patted Meri on the shoulder in a comforting gesture, as she and Gwyneth explained the situation.

Piping up when Meri finished, Hannah included, "Yes, it would be very helpful. I don't want Meri to be miserable for the next seven years."

She gave a grin at the other two girls. She had every confidence that Kaylie would be able to assist them. Afterall, she wouldn't be a prefect if she couldn't, right? Hannah knew that at this moment that she wanted to be a prefect, like Kaylie, when she got older. She wanted to be able to help others. It seemed like such a worthwhile thing to do.\n\n

I've been thinking about it, that's why it took so long... by Kaylie

Kaylie listened carefully to what the girls had to say. Her heart instantly went out to Meri and she gave the girl a comforting smile. She knew herself what it like to have allergies. However, it wouldn't be right to make Hannah give up her cat either. People got very attached to their pets. Kaylie wouldn't get rid of Irie, her ferret, and she knew Adam found Peanut especially comforting to have around.

"I understand, Meri." Kaylie said kindly. "I'm sorry I don't have a book of spells and cures but I do know the medic can make up a potion for allergies. I developed them myself just last year. I have to take it before Care of Magical Creatures, because mine are outdoor allergies and that class is held outside." \n\n

No worries, I understand :) by Meri

Meri visibly sagged with relief at Kaylie's answer. Even if it wasn't a permanent cure, at least there was something she could do, even if she had to drink a potion six times a day! She nodded eagerly as Kaylie explained that she had allergies too. Meri grinned at the older girl, glad that she wasn't the only one who had to worry about allergies.

"So, we just go to the hospital wing for an anti-allergy potion?" She sent a victory sign to Hannah and Gwynneth, then turned back to Kaylie. "Will I be able to learn how to make the potion too?" She was thinking ahead to being able to make the potion back at home, and going through a whole day at her parents' house, with all their plants, without sneezing. She preferred charms over potions, but anything would be worth the freedom from allergies! Suddenly, the year ahead of her didn't seem quite so daunting, and a LOT more thrilling...\n\n

Thank you for your patience. by Kaylie

Kaylie nodded and gave Meri a reassuring smile. "Yea, that's all you have to do. And of course you can learn to make it. I did, and I'm not that good at Potions. Of course, it doesn't last as long when I make it as when the medic or my mother makes it. I have figured out how to do it so it lasts through class."

Her eyes shifted to the other girls and she asked. "Any thing else I can do to help you at all?" Kaylie smiled broader. She was really beginning to like this prefect stuff already. It felt rewarding. She hoped she could be better at it than she was at most of her classes. Kaylie's magic was as strong as anyone's but she just didn't apply herself very well. "I could even take you to the Hospital Wing, as I assume you probably don't know where it is yet." She offered Meri. "I can't stay in there with you though, the medic seems to hate that." Kaylie didn't really want to tell Meri and the others that the medic seemed to not really like kids much at all. From what she understood, Wolfe was sorely lacking in bedside manner, though he knew what he was doing. However Kaylie didn't want to scare them. "But I will wait outside the hospital wing, so you don't get lost coming back," she finished, still smiling warmly at the first years.\n\n

*Victory sign back at you!* by Gwyneth

Gwyneth smiled broadly at Kaylie's answer. It seemed so simply, just like back home - - go to the doctor. But this time, instead of getting pills to take her friend would take a potion. She wondered how long the potion was effective. Back home, friends with allergies had to take their medication daily. But, whatever the case, pill or potion, this problem was solved and the "Three Musketeers" as she had begun to think of the group would go on to their next adventure.

"I don't know where the doctor's office, or the Hospital Wing, is but I'll go exploring with you 'til we find it!" she chirped happily to her friends.\n\n

Meri took a deep breath and exhaled noisily, her gratitude showing in her huge smile. She looked up, almost admiringly at the calm way her prefect dispatched solutions to the problems of new students. "Oh, would you?" she added, at the girl's offer to show the way to the dorms. She looked at Gwynneth, so eager to help, and Hannah, standing there stolidly. She felt her cheeks glow with happiness- she'd never thought that someone so...so...inept as herself would find friends so quickly (or at all).

She let Kaylie lead the way, and then turned to mutter in an undertone to her two friends, "And I hope either of you have outstanding talents in potions, because I'm an absolute KLUTZ with it..." She winced, and then added, as an after thought, "but, I AM rather good at writing papers, so I'll help you write any of yours if you can help with potions!" She wrinkled her nose with a grin. Anything with books... that was for her. The rest? Oh dear...if it came down to Meri completing a potion correctly or the world ending tomorrow... well... let's just say you'd best live your wildest dreams out today and not think about tomorrow!

Potion making might be a problem, you see by Gwyneth

Gwyneth followed Kaylie and her friends, happy that there was a solution at hand. At least, she was happy until she heard Meri say And I hope either of you have outstanding talents in potions, because I'm an absolute KLUTZ with it.... She felt the butterflies start up in her stomach. She didn't realize that they might be responsible for making the potion, she thought that the doctor would take care of that.

She sheepishly said to Meri, "Well, I'll try and help. But I've got to warn you. The last time I tried anything like Potion making was playing with my chemistry set in the garage this past summer. And that experiment ended up with the fire department responding to the garage being on fire after my 'experiment' kinda blew up!" She took a deep breath, flipped her ponytail and added, "But we are in this together, like the Three Musketeers!"\n\n
