After feast meeting (tag: Dimitri) by Ava Fletcher

After Dimitri agreed to meet her in the library after dinner, Ava had been pleasantly surprised, she'd thought that maybe he might want to go to sleep- it had been a long day after all, at least for her, with the wagon traveling down the coast and over a few states. But she was still happy about it and hurried to her dorm to unpack and find Dimitri's present and her sketchbook. She arrived before her other dorm mates which she'd been a little relieved as she had never really talked to them much, spending most of her time first semester in the library completing homework or in the MARS art room. She knew her Papa probably wouldn't have been too happy with her if he knew she hadn't really made many friends, but she was content with the way things turned out, she was getting her school work done with pretty good marks and was on her way to becoming a Healer- or so she hoped. Her mother would have mixed emotions, Ava speculated. Charlotte Fletcher had been a bit of a socialite back in her day. She'd had many friends back in school and had had boys at her beck and call. Why she had settled for a Muggle fisherman like Noah Fletcher when she could have had any of a number of wealthy wizards back in England where her family was, Ava didn't know. But she wasn't opposed to it. She had only good memories of her father, and she was proud of her mother for finding someone that she loved and staying with him no matter what her family thought. Ava didn't no much about the rift between her mother and her side of the family, but she was not so stupid as to think that Noah had nothing to do with it. She'd met her mother's parents once or twice and her mother's siblings a few times as well and had thought that'd they'd been quite nice, but she noticed how they never asked her about how her father was doing. She figured that they didn't know about him just as Papa hadn't known that his daughter in-law was a witch until Ava herself displayed magical tendencies. Ava shook her head trying to clear her mind so that she wouldn't be quite so scatterbrained when she met Dimitri in the library and picked up his present and her sketchbook. She unlocked the latch on Seal's carrying crate so that he could stretch and let him follow her out the door towards the library.

Once she was there, she found a space with two armchairs in it and sat down, placing the present and sketchbook to the side and allowing Seal to jump into her lap. She sighed and she gave him a head scratch while waiting for Dimitri to arrive. After he got there, she smiled at him and handed him both his present and her sketchbook. "The top one's for you," she said. "The bottom one is my sketchbook, I brought it so that you could look through it." She gave him another smile, hoping that he'd like his present and the many sketches of the beach and water that she had done from her house and her grandfather's boat. She visualized one particular one that she liked the most from a day last summer when Seal had insisted on coming out with her and Papa. The cat had been so unhappy not being able to go anywhere once they had gotten out in the middle of the water and Ava recalled how funny it had been to watch as Seal paced back and forth on the stern staring back at the shore longingly. She'd wanted to capture that moment in her sketchbook and she thought she'd done a pretty good job of it- it was one of her favorites and she planned to turn it into a watercolor one day to give to her Papa to hang in the dining room or in his study.

OOC: Dimitri's present in case you forgot since it was awhile ago that I posted that part, is six pieces of fudge from a local chocolate shop in Ava's home town. Three raspberry and three hazelnut. She tried to get sweeter ones because she didn't know if he liked the taste of dark chocolate and that's what they mainly sell there.

Well, this was going well...Deepest apologies by Dimitri

Dimitri rushed as quickly as he could to the Teppenpaw dorms without knocking anyone over on the way. He was excited to see what Ava had gotten him for Christmas and couldn’t wait to meet her in the Library. He unpacked as much of his clothing trunk as he could before he got bored with it and way too antsy. He told himself that since all that remained to be put away was mostly underpants and socks that he would worry about the rest of it later. He left his fencing trunk alone because most of what was in it was going to be used by the fencing club at their next meeting. He hung up his school robe since he wasn’t going to need it to meet with Ava and tried to comb out his hair slightly. He glanced in the mirror inside his wardrobe and grimaced at his reflection. His hair was still way to curly to tame so he basically just said forget it and left the dorms. He made his way through the school to the Library. Before opening the Library door he glanced down at his clothes to make sure that he was rumpled. His blue button-up shirt was still pretty decent and was still tucked into his black dress pants. He had taken off his tie that he had been wearing during the return feast. He had also decided to remove the sweater vest he had been wearing as well. He grinned at his converse tennis shoes and after assessing that his clothing was acceptable, he opened the door to the Library and went inside.

It took Dimitri only a moment to find Ava and was very surprised by who he found with her. Seated on her lap he noticed a very handsome looking cat. Dimitri stopped short near the seats she was sitting in and near and gave the cat a cautious glance. Dimitri had always liked cats, but the problem was most of the cats he’s encountered never seemed to like him in return. He approached the chairs slowly so as not to spook the cat just incase it happened to be the skittish kind. “I see you brought a friend with you,” he commented lightly eyeing the cat. “I sure hope your friend is the friendly kind. So far my luck with felines has not been very good.” He gave her a weary smile as he moved the items she pointed out to him from the chair across from hers as he sat down. “Thank you for the present,” he told her sincerely, trying to not focus on the friendliness or lack thereof of her furry companion. He glanced nervously at the cat one last time before opening the gift she gave him. He smiled at the thought she put into giving him something that looked really yummy, it was a huge bummer that he couldn’t eat it. Well, he could but with not so pretty consequences. For some reason chocolate seemed to highly disagree with his stomach so he avoided eating it whenever possible. He wasn’t going to tell her that though for the simple fact that he didn’t want to hurt her feelings for such a thoughtful gift. He smiled at her before thanking her for the gift. “This looks really good Ava, thank you,” he told her sincerely. “Would you like to share them with me?” he asked as he opened the box and held it out to her offering her one. He put the open box of chocolates on the table between them incase she decided she wanted to take him up on his offer.

He opened her sketch book and began flipping through the pages. He liked her take on the ocean. She seemed to have quite a grasp of the water’s movements because you could almost see them move in her sketches. He grinned appreciatively as he continued to flip through the pages. He stopped at one of the sketches in particular and chuckled as she completely captured the anxiety of the cat in her lap as he appeared to be pacing on what appeared to be the deck of a boat. The way she captured him/her on paper he could almost imagine the cat pacing. “I think this one is my favorite,” he told her holding the page. “I like that you can practically see the cat moving across the deck. This is really good.” He smiled at her as he handed the book back to her. He reached to the box of chocolates and pulled out one of the raspberry ones. He took a small bite of it hoping that he didn’t pay for it later. He finished the piece of chocolate and was licking the residual off of his fingers when the unthinkable happened. He heard and felt a strange angry rumble spread through his belly and glanced around nervously sitting rim-rod stiff in the chair. He prayed silently that Ava didn’t hear the noise that emanated from his body just then. The angry rumbling passed and he began to relax a little hoping that was the worst of it. He could not have been more wrong. He was about to say something to Ava about how great the chocolate tasted when he heard a terrible, muffled rumble come from beneath him. Dimitri’s eyes widened in horrified surprise and he closed his eyes in guilt. “I cannot begin to say how sorry I am for that,” he apologized, praying that that was merely noise and nothing else. He shook his head sadly and dropped his gaze into his lap. He could only imagine what she must think of him now.

That's okay, happens to the best of us! by Ava Fletcher

Ava watched as Dimitri nervously skirted around Seal and she held back a grin- Seal was probably the least intimidating cat she knew. He had never attacked anyone, but Dimitri wasn't to know that and maybe he was afraid of cats. She resolved to not bring Seal around him anymore- she wouldn't have let Seal come with her tonight if she had known. It seemed like she was coming up with a lot of 'should have dones' for tonight. She scolded herself in her head. 'It's in the past, Ava. Nothing you can do now. Relax and have fun.'

"You're welcome," she said when he thanked her for the present. She carefully looked at his face while he opened it, excited to see if he liked it, but if he didn't, it didn't show. He placed the box on the table, asking her if she'd like to share, which Ava thought was pretty nice, and opened her sketchbook. She knew she wouldn't be able to eat anything until he had finished looking through her work, so she opted to just sit and watch. She fiddled with her fingers nervously as Dimitri looked through her sketchbook. She hadn't shared her sketches with many people- her Papa didn't count, and whenever his friends came around they always teased her for not letting them see. She didn't mind, she liked it when they called her their 'little Michelangelo', referring to the famous artist who never liked people to watch him work as he didn't want people to think of his art as a work in progress and only as a work completed. "C'mon, Michelangelo," they'd say. "Give us a peek, you've got to have finished something by now." Ava smiled softly, thinking about them and how maybe she'd let them look if Dimitri approved of her sketches.

She looked up at him happily as he complemented them. "Thank you," she smiled back as she accepted her sketchbook back. "I've been thinking about making it into a watercolor for my Papa." She looked at him curiously, wondering what he thought of it when Dimitri made a couple funny noises followed by a very apologetic face.

“I cannot begin to say how sorry I am for that,” he said as he shook his head and looked at his lap.

Ava had to hold back a snicker lest she embarrass him further. She grinned though so he would know that she wasn't made uncomfortable by the situation at all. She waved her hand. "Don't worry about it, you should hear my Papa sometime, it's really funny because he looks very dignified, right? Even if he is a bit scatterbrained," she giggled as she leaned in conspiratorially. "But the doctors say he can't drink milk. But he really likes tea so he doesn't listen and drinks it anyway. Then, sometimes he'll let off this earth shattering noise and pretends like it wasn't even him!" She leaned back and sighed. She really missed her grandfather now, she wondered how he was coping without even Seal to keep him company, when she realized that he probably liked having the house to himself for bit, being able to enjoy life like he should have had his son not had that accident.

That's good to know by Dimitri

Dimitri laughed with Ava at the description she gave of her grandpa’s release of pressure. He glanced at her curiously when she told him that not only did he do the same thing that Dimitri just did, only louder, but he also tried to blame it on someone else. “Seriously? He actually tries to blame it on someone else? Wow…” he chuckled trying to imagine his own grandpa doing the same thing. Although he couldn’t say that his gramps didn’t in his own way. His gramps thought it was funny to blame his flatulence on some elusive pink elephant that somehow always managed to escape everyone’s view. “Although, I can’t say that my gramps is any different,” he told her laughing to himself. “He likes to blame his funny noises on some elusive pink elephant that no one else can see except him.” He never really did understand that joke. He laughed at the joke when gramps told it, but he really didn’t understand why it was funny blaming farts on invisible elephants. He shrugged at the thought. “I really appreciate the thought for the fudge though. It was amazingly nice of you,“ he assured her, smiling. “I’m just sorry that I didn’t mention that I was slightly dairy intolerant. I’m so used to watching what I eat that it never dawned on me to say something to anyone else about it.” He smiled apologetically to her. He nodded thoughtfully as Ava told him about wanting to turn her drawing into a watercolor for her grandpa. “I think it would look really cool as a watercolor,” he told her appreciatively. “I have no doubts that your gramps would love it if you did,” he told her confidently.

Dimitri had been watching her furry friend out of the corner of his eye while they were talking and had been debating whether or not to give petting him/her a try. The cat seemed pretty mellow and he hoped that meant that it wasn’t going to go nuts or something when he did try to pet it. He figured he’d never know what would happen if he didn’t go for it. He leaned slightly cloer to the end of his chair so that he was closer to her and her furry buddy. “I’m sorry if it seems like I was avoiding your furry buddy,” he told her. “I’ve always liked cats, but they don’t always seem to like me too much. You wouldn’t mind too much if I tried petting…what’s your pet’s name?” he asked, stretching his hand out slowly towards her pet. He sincerely hoped she didn’t feel uncomfortable with his hand being so close to her lap while he gently stroked the cat on its head. He began scratching the animal behind its ears, all the while being careful not to startle it. So far it appeared to be working, but that could quickly change. He just hoped that the cat didn’t decide it actually didn’t like the petting and wanted to take a chunk out of his hand. He would just have to chance it and see.

Learn a new thing every day, right? by Ava Fletcher

Ava nodded, "I know! But it's okay, everyone knows that he's a big liar so no one really believes him. We play along though because it's funny" She laughed again as Dimitri began to explain about the pink elephant that Dimitri's grandpa used. "An elusive pink elephant that no one can see?" Ava raised her eyebrows. "That's really funny and creative!" But as Dimitri explained his dairy intolerance, Ava immediately began to feel bad. "I'm sorry!" She exclaimed. "I didn't know, otherwise I would have got your something else! Maybe I can make up for it some other way?" She thought for a moment. "We can sit together in Charms!" She announced happily, hoping this was okay with him.

"You really think so?" She asked him, studying the sketch of Seal carefully. "I'm nervous to try, I haven't used watercolors in awhile and never to try and recreate a sketch that I already like- I'm worried that I won't be able to paint it as well as I sketched it! That's why I haven't tried so far..." She trailed off thinking about how she wished she would be able to add color to the sketch, the nutrient rich blues and green to the water, the bright white of the boat and the gorgeous orange of the sail, and off course the light grey body of her beloved Seal.

Lost in thought, she hadn't noticed Dimitri slowly leaning closer and closer until he spoke. "It's okay," she smiled apologetically. "There were a lot of people back home who avoided me when I was with him." Or just me in general, she thought to herself. "They called me a witch and said he was my familiar." She nodded to Seal and gave a small laugh as she realized the irony of it. "Little do they know that I actually am a witch. Muggles seem to think that's a bad thing but," she shrugged. "I rather like it- means I get to get away from them and live a little!" When Dimitri asked to pet Seal and inquired after his name, her smile grew bigger. "Of course you can! His name's Seal, he shouldn't attack you, he hasn't attacked anyone really, he hissed a little at the Muggle girls a few times but nothing more than that." She smiled fondly at the memory, Seal had been a little kitten the first time he'd done that and she'd been walking to the marina with her father. She'd dawdled a bit to pick a flower. The girls from her class had come to tease her and she supposed Seal must have picked up on her discomfort because he immediately arched his back and began to hiss at them. They backed off, but recommitted to teasing her from afar when he was there.

OOC: That charms bit was in order to tie in the mess of thread I accidentally created in the Charms room- oops!

You got it by Dimitri

Dimitri grinned at her insistence to make up the Christmas gift to him. Ava had no way to know that he was lactose intolerant. “I like the idea of us sitting together in Charms class, but you don’t have to make up the fudge to me. You had no way of knowing that I had problems with dairy,” he told her good naturedly. He waved away her apology on the subject. “Don’t worry about it. I liked the piece of it I was able to eat before the fireworks went off,” he joked. He laughed with her on her comments about her grandpa and his. He had to admit the old man was pretty creative and funny when he wanted to be. The rest of the time he was a pretty stern individual. He nodded when she asked if he was sure her picture would look good as a watercolor. “Absolutely,” he told her. He gave her assessment of her work some serious consideration before he responded. “While its true the coloring might be a bit off from the picture if you tried doing it in watercolor,” he agreed lightly. “However, I think that even if the color does end up being slightly different, it would still look cool. By the coloring being different, you essentially have created a whole new picture as it were.” He wasn’t sure if she would agree or disagree with his statement, but at least she would know how he felt about it.

He had inched his way closer to her and her cat as they were talking and she seemed okay with his trying to pet her furry buddy. “Hey Seal…Seal right?” he asked slightly, making sure he had heard the cat’s name correctly. When she confirmed the name, he grinned at the cat and proceeded to attempt the petting. He put his hand on Seal’s head and crunched his eyes closed as he waited for either the hissing or the biting to start. He opened one of his eyes slowly as the cat began to purr under his tentative hand. He felt his mouth twist into a pleased smile as he began stroking the cat’s head and back. He was overly surprised that Seal seemed to like his petting him and wasn’t trying to take his hand or fingers off. “Wow!” he mused as he continued to pet the cat. Just to be bold he reached under the cat’s mouth and began scratching his chin. The cat seemed to like that as well because Seal seemed to purr even louder as Dimitri scratched his chin. He almost reached down to scratch the cat on his belly, but he didn’t want to press his luck. He had managed to get this far without injury or maiming, he wanted to keep it that way. He slowly removed his hand from under Seal’s chin and rested it on his knee. “Thanks for not tearing my hand apart Seal,” he said to the still purring cat. “You’re the first feline I’ve ever been able to pet without getting maimed.” He laughed at his own bad joke and shook his head. He absently glanced down at his hand.

They had a few scars here and there from his unfortunate encounters with not so happy cats, but they weren’t as bad as he made them sound. It mostly felt like they had been maimed more than them actually having been. He absently yawned a bit and covered his mouth with his hand. “Sorry about that,” he apologized, grinning sheepishly. It appeared that the trip home from England and the trip back to school had finally taken their toll. Dimitri was now getting slightly tired, but he didn’t want the outing with Ava to end just yet. “Wow…didn’t see that happening just now,” he laughed slightly referring to the yawn. “Should we call it a night or would you like to hang out some more?” he asked, silently hoping that she didn’t want to leave yet.
