Over the years, Connor had gotten comfortable in the Sonora library. He had all but lived among the stacks in his fifth year, and since sixth year hadn't proved easier, he had not discontinued his daily pilgrimage to the small table behind the Geography section. Even he'd thought it was overkill at the time, but he was now glad he'd done it; it made getting used to the huge amount of work associated with being ready for the RATS easier.

Sometimes, Anne would drop down into one of the empty seats and either study with him or ramble on for a while, but his most frequent company was Gwen. Because no one had told her what she was supposed to do after graduation, she was being cautious and trying to do well on her RATS. He, personally, couldn't see Gwen working any more than he could see her on a mission to Mars, but he wasn't complaining; she made good company on good days, and studying with company worked much better than studying solo.

This afternoon, though, he hadn't asked her to meet him at the Geography section because he couldn't get something in Charms. He had information to pass along, because he had a feeling that neither he nor Bulla wanted to see what would happen if Jenkins cornered Gwen. If it was a good day, she would either be pleasant, if maybe a little guarded. If it wasn't such a good day...Well, it would probably be better for Sonora if the Council's agent didn't get mixed up with one of her psycho father's.

He had his Defense book open in front of him as she came in to keep up appearances. Connor didn't think it was really a secret anymore that they were friends, or even that he knew why smart Pecaris avoided Crotalus girls, but it was easier just to go along with her desire to act like they were in a secret society. It amused her, she said. A perk of Gwen was that she was very easy to amuse. "Hey," he said, quietly as a mark of respect to their meeting place.

Only if we pretend I posted this a week ago. by Gwen Carey

Gwen had never been a huge fan of the Sonora library. There were useful resources in it, for sure, but she couldn't get the stereotype of frumpy old-maid Aladrens out of her head. Fifth year had pushed her into it along with everyone else, though, and it was her luck that the two people she had the best, if least honest, relationships with liked the place a great deal.

At least Anne had an excuse - she was a soon-to-be old-maid Aladren. Connor's bookishness was just off. Gwen had always privately thought lack of social graces was all that had kept him from Crotalus, but he was a Pecari, and Pecaris simply weren't supposed to be that way.

This was on her mind as she navigated the shelves. At least it was private, here. She hadn't known what was between the two of them since fifth year, but she did know Morgaine had no business meddling with it. Gwen had been keeping tabs on her sister since they'd come back to school, and knew she'd been spending even more time in the library than usual, but she seldom left the medical section for long and never came anywhere near Geography.

"Hi, dahlin'," she said, her voice low but not all the way down to a whisper, and sat down beside him without waiting for an invitation. After all these years, she felt no need to stand on standard ceremony - they had enough ceremonies of their own to observe. She adored the private coding and unwritten laws that came with relationships and, when Gwen had free time, she analyzed all of hers obsessively. Great fun, though not something she talked about; Amber made the best guinea pig in the world, and she'd thought it was odd when Gwen talked about it to her.

She glanced at the book in front of him. "Is O'Leary giving you trouble?" she asked. "I had some trouble with all those wandless incantations, too." This was a lie - it was one of those rare things she'd stumbled across that she had a real knack for - but it was a nice lie. Nice lies didn't count.
